Mr. Matt
This is how I found out about the game Don't Starve. I used to watch (and still do) the Yogscast and then one day they uploaded a video of a game called Don't Starve. It was a game in alpha, little old me back then knew nothing like what an "alpha" meant. At one point when they died in the video the series ended, never starting over and I forget about it. A year later id say it wasn't in alpha anymore and another member of the Yogscast, called Sips started the series. I suddenly remembered about the game and saw it had lots of changes and that it also had a story! The series almost lasted 100 episodes but then it ended. I forgot it existed and then more time passed till I found out that it had DLC coming called Reign of Giants both the channels made a small series on it and the same happened again, I forgot about it. Another year passes and then I find out that Klei made a multiplayer version that already had an alpha and I missed it. At this point I actually decided to buy the Megapack and become a part of the community (I got it on a cheeky sale). Now here I am today, I met lots of cool people, played the games a lot, browse the Klei forums for updates and enjoy the Don't Starve Series and will continue playing it. EDIT: So this was moved to General Discussion, but I guess I could see how this goes here instead of Tales of Life and Death Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/91129-how-did-you-all-find-out-about-dont-starve/ Share on other sites
minespatch
Quote minespatch Will probably draw it 35,086 11,007 posts Report post Posted July 20, 2017 I got into the game due to my buddy @toki-wartoothxx showing me pages of @Miss's Bloodeagles comics. I was alone a lot at the time and my father in the hospital that I kept reading each page of that comic daily until it became routine. Then I kept reading @Raven Crow's comic which got me into the William Carter puzzles. Those comics and the origin trailer I watched daily in February 2016 made me wonder what kind of world Wilson landed into. It was a really long time until I got the games(Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked, DST). I really thank my friend for getting me into the game lore before I could even get the game. It was three or so months later that I made a art thread to get my thoughts out and met people who enjoyed what I made. Little audience but I was glad people could understand what I was drawing. Big thanks to my comic company group Strange Squad for giving me the income of my conceptual art to them that I got the money for the games in the first place. Always hyped for more lore so I can understand... THEM. Zeklo
That's actually kinda neat. I ended up getting the game from that first Yogscast video. Took me a bit longer to come across the forums and join up, but that's pretty much how that went. ShadowDuelist
I was looking for a fun coop game to play with my gf, that was not a FPS (she gets motionsick with them). After months of browsing every weekend steam's store, one day it happened that don't starve together appeared at the store's front, as it was just out of the beta. The launch package included the 2 copies lf dst and a free copy of ds and rog. The reviews were extremely funny and the overwhelmingly positive rate made it sound like a juicy deal, so I bought the whole thing. We laughed a lot that day since our first playthrough was 100% blind. After the initial blast of joking around and learning the basics I got very interested to know more about the game, so I started watching YouTube videos, reading the wiki and became a lurker here. Sadly despite having finished adventure mode, I never really got into DS that much, I'm too used to DSTs mechanics, balance and unique things now. Every time I start a world at DS it just feels like a less polished DST to me and I end up quitting around day 120 or so. I have just 80 hours into ds/shipwrecked, against 1600+ Dst (and counting). I'm hoping to play more ds when hamlet is released tho. Xedlord
I caught a glimpse of it when when I was very young, just a single picture of Wilson running through the forest with the DS logo, but I was instantly in love. I never forgot it, and years latter I was finally able to play it. CaptainChaotica
Heard about it early on (still in beta? just out of beta? not sure) from Jick and co. on the "Video Games Hot Dog" podcast. (Don't ask...they themselves don't know why all their podcasts ended up having "hot dog" in the name. : P) Jick himself didn't like it, but he often doesn't like fun. The others described Don't Starve in a way that made it stick in my memory. YEARS later, I finally got around to remembering that hey, Let's Plays exist! and since I'm already watching some, _why don't I look up one for Don't Starve_, and get an idea of what the game is actually like? So I did. The first LP I saw was JackSepticEye's really old one, which mainly told me a couple things NOT to do, then I got a few episodes into Sips's (YAY SIPS WHOO) before I paused the video and got the game. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/91129-how-did-you-all-find-out-about-dont-starve/#findComment-1038897 Share on other sites
Lumina
I was in a discussion channel about another game. Someone mentionned Don't Starve (they started it recently) Other started the game too. They were discussing it a lot and it seemed amazing. Unfortunately, at this time i didn't have a way to buy a game on internet, so i was a little sad. But one friend of mine offered me a copy of the game ( <3 ). I was really happy, and me too i joined people playing the game, we shared our experience, discoveries, it was really a wonderful experience. I'm really grateful that my friend offered me this game. I remember my first discoveries, like "oh, stumps don't grow back" or "yes, finally, this is how you make charcoal". Cass_
Similiar to your story. I saw the game on YouTube when it was on early access in October 2012, then I bought it a year later and i've loved it ever since. Mr Pig
I found DST through the youtube channel Stumpt Gamers. I thought I had seen the game before so I watched their lets play only to get hooked. After months of researching the game so I could actually understand what on earth was going on I finally purchased it. (something I rarely do with games even when I'm really into them) Little did I know this game would become one of my favorites to date! While I lost a lot of the difficulty curve from knowing a large portion of the game's mechanics it was still tricky to get the hang of. I'm happy to have found this community and as for the fifteen bucks spent on a copy of the game... Worth it and then some Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/91129-how-did-you-all-find-out-about-dont-starve/#findComment-1039010 Share on other sites

imsomony
My partner saw Don't Starve (singleplayer) on Steam back in 2013, shortly after the game left early-access and was going into its series of final updates. I think it was early March? Neither of us knew that Winter existed, so it must have been after A Winter's Tale, but I remember running into the MacTusk City set piece before it got disabled. Anyway, I watched him play for a while and thought it was really fun, so he bought it for me too. Been hooked ever since - it's definitely in my top 5 favorite games, and I still love it and play it pretty regularly. While DST was in alpha development (2014), Klei allowed people to sign up to receive 2 free keys once it went to beta/early-access. They also offered the game for free to any current owners of singleplayer in the future (2016), so those who wanted to wait would still get it. Both my partner and I signed up for beta keys, and gave away extras here and on Reddit as we got them. Maxil20
Honestly, I got the game so long ago that I don’t even remember where I began seeing it. YT definitely helped me, and general news about the game too. The main reason I got into the game entirely was because of an accident. My brother wanted to buy the game on the PS3, but he did not read it closely and got it on the PS vita. So being a decent person I just decided to go and buy it on our laptop. He played it, and one day I got bored and wanted to play it. And now it’s one of the games I’ve played for over 2.5K-3K hours if DS/DST and console/mobile times are included. Thanks for not looking too closely, brother. You got me far too deep into this game. Jynn
I got into game because i made some friends in TF2 and they suggested a few other games we could play together, one of which was DST. Kolascay
About 3-5 years ago I found DS & T when YouTube... reccomended it to me. Mario384
I remember seeing it on a youtube video at one point, the game had a very unique art style and it caught my attention. The problem I had with DS was that I'm not a huge fan of singleplayer games, and prefer games where I can play with others. So, I did buy DS back in 2012 I think, played it some, and then managed to get into the closed beta of DST pretty damn early. I had a good time, and then I learned how to mod the game, and since then it's been my go-to for messing around with concepts and practicing programming ever since, along with the fun I have playing with other folks. axxel
During my training I watched my 2 mates playing DS (using a mod to play together, DST wasn't released yet).I asked this and that because it had a quirky artstyle and I was fond of ...Woodie! ( because of classic lumberjacks, of course). So next time I searched for that on internet and I decided to buy this. Shortly thereafter I went to the near electronics market and bought a physical copy and registred it on steam.
