Woodie Character Update Next Week + News!

Hey everybody, 

Woodie's Character refresh is coming next week on Sept. 12th! You can find the details of his refresh below but please remember as always, some of this might change a bit between now and next Thursday. 

Woodie Character Refresh

  • In addition to Werebeaver, Woodie now has two new transformations that specialize in different things, such as combat and locomotion.
  • A random transformation can be triggered by repeatedly consuming Monster Meat (or prepared dishes like Monster Lasagna).
  • A specific transformation can be triggered by consuming one of the three new craftable idols made with Monster Meat.
  • The Log Meter has been replaced with a Were-Meter that appears only during Woodie’s were-forms.
  • The Were-Meter drains constantly, and Woodie reverts to Human form once it runs out.
  • Performing specific actions will extend Woodie’s time in each were-form.
  • During fullmoon, Woodie is forced into a random transformation (once per fullmoon), and the Were-Meter drains at half the speed.
  • Reduced Woodie’s sanity drain while in were-form.
  • Woodie no longer gains sanity when planting trees.
  • Woodie no longer needs to eat wood.
  • Woodie has a 50% higher chance to spawn Treeguards.
  • Like the Werebeaver, all new were-forms gain night vision and some weather resistance.

We had a lot of fun with this one and we hope that all you Woodie mains out there love him even more! Some of you out there might even find a new love for the Constant's coolest Canadian castaway. 

We also have a couple other interesting things happening on September 12th. 

Return of Them: Salty Dog

In addition to Woodie's refresh coming into the main game, the next part of our Return of Them content update will be coming to the beta branch (with Woodie playable there as well) on September 12th. We will have more details about it next Thursday, but in this update you will see a new boss, new items, a new creature and a new crafting resource. 

Console Update:

We have everything ready and we're preparing for console players to receive Woodie next week, but in addition you will also be getting Return of Them: Turn of Tides content as well! This has not gone all the way through certification yet, so it's possible it could be off a day or two, but at this time we don't expect any delays.  

As always with Console, this isn't entirely up to us, so we may get a delay of a day or two while we work through certification, but as of right now we expect this to release next week as well.

Love the moon druid vibe this has going for it! I'm not seeing a lot of explicit drawbacks though, mostly just the same QoL issues from before.

More treeguards is both a boon and a curse in ways. Mass gathering logs is impeded by treeguards spawning; the higher frequency at which you cut trees, the more treeguards you will generally see. Increasing the odds on top of that is just going to further slow wood-gathering speed, although it does mean more living logs, which is particularly handy in the early game.

I'd love to see a few QoL changes to the wereforms as QoL is what holds me back from playing current Woodie, as opposed to balance reasons.

Personally, I'd suggest just disabling Woodie's inventory in the transformations rather than making him drop everything. Backtracking and re-sorting inventory are not very fun downsides and become quite tedious over extended play.

Also why is the map disabled in wereform? I'd love to see that changed, but it's not enough alone to keep me from playing him like the inventory issue.

Thanks for putting so much love into the reworks - I'm looking forward to seeing the final version of Woodie!

This has not been a feature in Don't Starve together since like 2014, You're thinking of Singleplayer.

Well, I do be very surprised of that refresh and I can truly say you worked well on it ! Sounds like a lot of the players requests are on it too, thanks to keep listening to the community that is your favourite source of inspiration. :wilson_vforvictory:

All these new Woodie's forms will surely put aside the down-side the Werebeaver had and let more peoples enjoying him if gathering wood just to eat it isn't their main interest on the character, that's gonna be a real change.

I also think this should be keeped. But reduce the amount of sanity gaining (only 1 instead of 5). Or gaining 1 health instead of sanity (maybe depending on what he plants, pine cone or birch nut).
Wormwood has this perk too, even with everything what's plantable. And it better fits to his character, as he is a plant, while Woodie is killing the trees without regret ;)

Bruh, you guys basically merged Wilba with Woodie. :wilson_sneaky:

Like seriously, those monster meat idols better look like a certain something otherwise I'ma be mad.

I'm holding all judgments until we see woody come out but from this he seems pretty nice.  No downsides besides the tree guard spawn rate increase and the full moon... I'm assuming the transforms have active downsides?

Either way with this little info you've given us it seems he'll be an interesting character for people to meddle with.
