Should I Buy Oxygen Not Included?

I've been thinking about buying this game since 2017, but I'm still unsure if I'd want to or not. 
Is this game worth the money, and is it an overall fun and engaging experience?

I would buy sooner than later, right now it's still early access which is cheaper than when it goes full release

This game is easily as good if not better than Kerbal Space Program or Rimworld, if you like those types of games you will like this.

The game will release in july. The first thing is, prices are going up, as usually. So if you want the game, which is almost finished yet, you should by now.

You're in the wrong place if you want an unbiased opinion I think. I'm pretty sure that 99% of the people who post here are big fans of the game ( myself included ).

Having spent over 900 hours now in the game, and with many others around here having spent way more than that, I safely can say that it's got incredible value for money. It's engaging, funny, a little bit silly in a good way, and has a lot of depth hidden under that veneer of cute silliness.

You will agonize at the many factors that can doom a base, scream as dupes manage to build themselves into a corner or otherwise find 'interesting' ways to occupy your time. You will spend hours in deep thought about how to tackle various problems, and how to manage everything in your growing colonies.

Don't be afraid to fail, your first colonies will most likely go up in flames as the various problems crop up and make short work of it. but eventually you will learn how to manage the many bits and pieces of this game and your projects in it will become grander and more refined.

ONI is a special kind of game that focuses on a certain niche of players. Just give us a short summary of the game on how you perceive it or what you would expect from the gameplay and we will tell you if you are right or wrong.

 

ONI is about solving problems in a semi realistic physics engine. These problems are solved by constructing machines which will consume resources but also emit waste products which have to handled with other machines. This core gameplay is packaged in a survival game where you can loose if you are not solving your problems fast enough. However, this survival aspect is very shallow and easy to handle so it mainly serves as a purpose to build certain things or provide short term goals.

In a way, ONI is a mix between dwarf fortress and factorio if these games are known to you.

 

A short example in practice: You want to water your crops which only grow on temperatures around 20°C. The only renewable water source is 95°C hot so you can't use it to water your crops. You can cool down the water with an Aquatuner, however, the Aquatuner will overheat if operated in normal air. To prevent the overheating, you need to submerge it in a liquid (cold water) which can soak up the heat. Now the water in which you have submerged the Aquatuner will eventually start to boil and you can't replace it with your renewable water source since it already has 95°C. As a solution you use a steam turbine which will cool down the steam produced by the Aquatuner. And there you have it. The simple task of making water cold enough to water your plants.

And then the optimization potential kicks in: The surroundings will overheat because the steam is 125°C hot. You need to insulate your water cooler. The Aquatuner can't cool down your water to 20°C in one go, so you need a reservoir and loop it back into the Aquatuner, using automation to detect the right temperature. The steam turbine generates small amounts of electricity that is too low to power anything but you don't want to waste it so you need to find a way to integrate it into your power grid.

 

If you like this kind of tinkering around with your self designed contrabtions, then ONI is a game you will enjoy.

Well, I've put more than 4k hours into it since it went into early release... Which means that I've been enjoying it a great deal.  Its still keeping me interested and engaged after more than a year -- and it isn't even finished yet.

I've bought the game pre-Ranching Update and played it just a bit. Then at some point after the Expressive Update I decided to take another look. When I saw light coming from the window at somewhat around 4 a.m, I realized it was a good thing I tried it on a weekend and continued playing. My advice is to keep that possible side-effect in mind when making your decision if you are susceptible to this kind of behaviors and it does not align with your other plans.

I have many hours on my clock, from that point ONI was worth every cent, but it changed.
Last bunch of updates reduced my fun, to play with that game.

This is a biased answer, obviously, but I can't recommend it enough to someone who enjoys these types of games.  In an era where AAA developers cut every corner and major publishers cynically chase trends, it's refreshing to play a well-crafted game where the player experience, not monetization, is the priority.

What is it like 20 bucks?  I am like at 350 hours.   Name a game that has that cost to playtime ratio.  It would also be a good value!

Your gonna want to put up a clock somewhere around you or just alt tab a lot for time.  Or just ignore it and dont open the blinds.

But it but wait for release to play it. It will be better. Now it`s still great but there are a few systems being worked on and not as good as they should be.

Still it`s really fun anyway, just a few issues typical for early access.

It's fun, every play-through is completely different from the last, each game holds it's own challenges in some way or another.  You get to build cool **** that does stuff.  From seemingly simple game mechanics is borne an inherent complexity.

I don't regret buying ONI at all, it's one of my better purchases.

Above all, the KLEI staff love you and will/may have your babies if you buy the game, ok, they won't have your babies, but they are above all the best I've encountered, I'm almost 100% sure that they all drink Carlsberg.  If I didn't know better, which I don't, I would probably say that they are Carlsberg.
