EuedeAdodooedoe
I hear the whole joke about "there are no useless items, just uncreative players", and I'm starting to even question whether some people actually believe that in its entirity. Well, this topic is an opportunity for you to prove this, if you really believe the idea. Items/objects can include things that are already used for something but not too often in ways that are RELIABLE for how often you will use them for that purpose, or items that are generally. A few examples of my own, could include having a Houndius Shootius being placed at each cave entrance and near the bat mounds. This could keep the supply of bat wings going up for you to make bat bats, so long as you have living logs on you and keep some basic magic gems in a chest/scaled around near the areas, or may be even leaving some spare bat bats inside the chests themselves. Late game I keep about a stack of living logs on me at all times, just like a stack of nightmare fuel for dark swords and anything else that I might use this stuff for. They become essential items in place of logs, flint, grass and twigs for me I used to use up about a dark sword or two in caves sometimes just to get wings, but one or two of Houndius Shootius doing it for me would be pretty great, since they kill the bats with one shot. Though something like feeding stingers to the lureplant bin doesn't count as a use Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/91209-finding-uses-for-uselessunreliable-stuff/ Share on other sites

ShadowDuelist
I guess this one is fairly known by many but worth mentioning, straw rolls are a cheap way to fuel your fire to the max intensity, specially if you are running out of wood or don't have wood at all, and need a good source of light in a pinch. I always carry grass, so it works for me at least. Its mostly useful as fuel, instead of it originally intended purpose of sleeping. I think there are a few examples of these alternative uses with some of the "not that useful" items, but I doubt there are with all of them. Anyhow, the lureplant bulb was probably a useless item until someone figured it could be used to pick up items in large amounts as wickerbottom, or to always have abigail up with Wendy, or to block giants, so I'm interested to be enlightened about new creative stuff like this. GenomeSquirrel
Everytime I see an idea involve the Houndicus, especially multiples, I can't overcome how ridiculous and uncreative it is, and it's always there as step one, as if it were something quick and simple to do. Why not list some examples with the actually never used items like mushroom planters, oneman band, gun powder, or bee mines? Captain_Rage
6 hours ago, Mr. Matt said: This gives me an idea to do something with Iridescent gems... They are perfect for decorating and marking wormholes (I don't want to use any mods) or any other point of interest. During the initial exploration of the map I sometimes throw a specific number of random items down an uncharted wormhole, and leave the same amount of items next to it, so when I see for example 2 nitres next to another wormhole I know that It was connected with the first. It might be more expensive to mark two interconnected wormholes with two blue gems each, and mark the consecutive pairs with even more gems of the same color, but I do this so I can color code other points of interest on the map instead of purely using separate colors for coding the wormholes. Sometimes it helps to get your gameflow going and to set up bases quickly if you figure out ways to organize things and here some of the 'useless' items can be helpful. If I craft four Whirly Fans and leave them on the ground marking the corners of a rectangle it will help me to plan the base, especially if it's a bigger one. Well, although somewhat silly, there you have one example. Do i confuse them with another item ? Having way to have more mushroom is very powerful and allows a lot to manage sanity easily. Gun powder isn't that useless, tedious to do/use, maybe. I agree that oneman band isn't worth the use. About bee mines, i would say that they have a use, but don't worth the effort to make it, rather than being useless. NorthicaN
Gunbowder i use for farming marble trees like around 6 marble tree one gun powdre worth than. Wasting golden pickaxes.... Bee mines have that one amazing use. When you go fight the Ancient Guardian. Take like 2-3 bee mines like over 10 bees so you go fight Ancient Guardian. Bee will poke him his next target will be the bee who hit him not you so you just hit him 4-5 times stop when bee hits him last and he targets the bee then again go hit him. Mushroom farm arent useless at all. I usually build lot trees close bunnymen and when tree guard comes i get living wood for replenishing mushroom farms. So i can make mushroom hats for the light thingish you catch with net and cook lot green shrooms get sanity back. In my though they need to do something with Tusks.. i got like walking cane. Tamed beef and now like over 60 tusk in chest sitting and doing nothing. Would be cool some tusk weapons new. Id love or tusk armor. Rellimarual
Lots of people use mushroom planters. If you use giants to farm wood, you’ll have plenty of living logs. Our longer-lived servers always have a chest full of them. Planters give you green caps for Wickers who are reading a lot of books, and vegetables for pierogis for boss fights. I don’t use gunpowder, but many players consider it essential for soloing bosses. fimmatek
About mushroom planters: I like to keep them in the caves so that the mushrooms don't turn into rot during winter and I don't have to pick them either. I use gunpowder or slurtle slime to kill giant tentacles, this is a relatively fast, cheap and reliable method. And also safe, so if I mess up my adventure in the atrium I can go back to the caves without risking my life at the tentacle. Gunpowder in general is a good help to newer players, a plan B for bosses. I killed both dragonfly and bee queen with gunpowder the first few times. But since I needed almost 4 stacks for DF, I had to learn how to kill it with different methods. 39 minutes ago, NorthicaN said: over 60 tusk in chest sitting and doing nothing. Late-game use could be to craft a lot of lazy explorers, but I don't really use them because they are not that necessary and most of their durability just goes wasted because I misclick every now and then. Now that the one man band was mentioned, I should try it to gather my bunnymen against dragonfly. I have a ton of hutches near its setpiece, I used to attack one to lure them there and then they aggro on DF. But maybe this could be a safer way? I'll have to test it. It takes 10 uses to mine a fully-grown marble shrub, so you get 13.2 per luxury pickaxe. A gunpowder costs 1 charcoal, 1 egg, and 1 nitre. That egg could have been given to the pig king, so it's worth 1 gold. If you're only blowing up 6 marble shrubs with a gunpowder, then 13.2 cost 2.2 gold, 2.2 nitre, and 2.2 charcoal. It's more expensive than the luxury pickaxe. The resource-efficient options for mining marble shrubs are werebeaver, shadow minions, and bearger. Explosives are fast, though. That is true, however one can collect the rotten eggs left after the pengulls and the nitre (and gold) from earthquakes, one just has to pick them up, especially if there's a cave base. Which one is worth it more depends on playstyle, I guess. ShadowDuelist
Despite what many say about them being useless, deep in the ruins I use Night lights. Sometimes when it's just a quick visit to the ancient pseudoscience station, I feel it's wasteful to use a star-caller, specially when I'm going to be down there just 2-3 minutes. I tend to have way more nightmare fuel than I can use, as a side effect of duplicating thulecite through construction/deconstruction. Regarding one man band, most characters have different ways to overcome their penalties, except perhaps Webber. I think Webber (this is more of a rebalance suggestion) should be able to befriend pigs or bunnymen through one man band, like all the other characters can befriend spiders through spiderhat (Currently webber gets no benefit from using one man band, at all). Other than that, I guess you can use it to start a pig war or bunnymen war, but you can also do that with just a morsel/carrot, so it's probably not worth making in the first place. "The End is Nigh" is not really a useless item since it works to overcharge WX, but not many uses are given to it beyond that or killing other players in PVP and non PVP worlds. I've been using it to also light up some areas by installing several lightning rods, and then charging all of them with the end is nigh. They remain charged for a few days and although it has a small radius, its a fairly cheap light source since you can spam the rods. It's decorative too as you can highlight some areas with the rods glow. A lantern or miner's hat should give more then enough light to do that. Or even a simple campfire. Well I'm not saying it's the most efficient thing for everyone, but its a matter of play-style really. I rarely carry wood so I tend to keep the precrafted fire pit/campfire as a last resource thing, down there there are no nearby sources of lightbulbs, and there are no trees to chop, however nightmarefuel is plentyful: not only because of duplicating thulecite, but also because of by doing so I usually go insane and stay insane. So basically I can save the lantern's durability for the trip back, while doing whatever is that I have to do, dealing with the nightmares or depth worms. Again, this is completely based on how I do things there, and spending just 2 o 3 nightmare fuel feels worth it to me (out of half chest full of it). I usually leave a scaled furnace down there too for winter trips, so no need to make a fire either. If I'm gonna stay for longer (a day or so) or if the battles have worn me out and I need some rest or healing , then I just use a starcaller. myxal
My €0.02 (not sure if/how many people consider these useless): mushroom planters with green shrooms - useful in summer when dusk is short gunpowder - instantly kill tentapillar night lights - as mentioned by @ShadowDuelist, farming fuel is almost unavoidable in ruins, might as well use it to provide light, since light bulbs are not always convenient beefalo horns - I keep 1-2 at every wormhole; use it and drop it immediately, to get the beefalo through the hole with me beefalo wool - best fire fuel IMHO - high stack and equivalent to log in fuel value, but is farmed faster, and costs no tool durability morning star - a must-have for larger cave base, to deal with worms (permanently wet) rainometer - with the ShowMe mod, this thing also shows world wetness and exact precipitation rate; I built one near each of the commonly-used cave exits. I use it to hop in, see if rain is just starting to subside, then quickly storm Toadstool with a morning star -> This is why I have nightmare fuel to spare for the lights Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/91209-finding-uses-for-uselessunreliable-stuff/#findComment-1039850 Share on other sites
