Nostalgic noob memories

This is a place to share memories of shenanigans and confusions that happened, when you just started to play the game, whenever this has been.

I actually went into the game blind during year of the carrat and I didn't figure out that you could COOK food over fire for days. I thought, the pigking would fight me, I thought you could only make meatballs, jam and ratatouille and I spend my summers running around trees with a whirly fan in panic. I know, we all were scared of the stagehand at one point, but I was afraid, that GLOMMER would kill me...

k so this was a while back to my first world
i saw jacksepticeye play shipwrecked bought dst and chose maxwell because i was like "cool hes the ruler of this place" saw he had 75 health and was ok then i didn't know how to use his shadows i never explored the map i based at beefalo and after that only went into the savanna biome and forest and never left my winter preperation was a pair of rabbit ear muffs and against all odds i made it all the way to deerclops before i got my ass kicked in

 

so basically i was a pro from the start

One memory that has stayed with me for a while was when I first encountered someone with a skin.  It was a Webber player with the triumphant skin and I asked him where he got it and he either told me he bought it or got it from a drop.  

 

Then there are a bunch of specific memories of when I was in the trial and error phase of playing the game.

I still remember the first Gobbler jump-scare, although that was in Don't Starve:( The eye-bone was also uncanny upon encountering it for the first time and I made sure to stay far away from it.

i remember when i started i liked going into public servers and go wormwood to help feed the group

if i went on dedicated servers i would end up exploring griefed bases cause it was interesting, and i could kind of get an idea of how to make my own base one day, and it also was like visiting ancient ruins

then once i met a guy who was pro had the ancient skin for the walking cane, and i just had to had it, so i started investigating, and eventually spent a whole afternoon solving the puzzle with a friend i met in one of those dedicated servers with griefed bases

The screams of my friends when they encountered gingerbread varg while fetching someone from spawn during winter, me sitting at base eating spoiled birchnuts and trying to understand what's going on. 

Or in Don't Starve, when my first Deerclops encounter scared me so shitless I thought I was gonna pass out, running away from base and dying of freezing in the middle of the night. 

Or finding Toadstool's cap when exploring caves with friends, getting really bad feeling about it then chopping it anyway. We ran in opposite direction and encountered ruins, which we also knew nothing about and died over and over spamming rollbacks in hopes we find something there before we gave up. 

Finding a varg for the first time wasn't fun either. Or ewecus for that matter. And it took us ages to learn how to catch a koalephant. 

The first time I went to Hamlet, I decided I will only prove to be deserving if I survive a year in normal world first. So, by the time I made the machine and went to a whole new world, it was already Aporkalypse. First I got chased by pogs, then I found metal hulks crawling and shooting lasers at me, and somewhere offscreen a Herald must have spawned because Terrorbeaks wouldn't leave me alone despite high sanity (for the first two minutes at least). I died soon enough to something, but I can't really remember what, probably the seedlings. Next time I tried to play Hamlet, I played it from the beginning. 

I remember people talking about Krampus a lot, and how Glommer's great for summoning him. I was personally scared of the concept so much, whenever I heard the hissing from slaughtering butterflies, I immediately stopped and didn't see the thing long into the game, when I finally decided I'm going to stuff myself with armor and stand in a field of tooth traps and only then kill Glommer. It was a couple hundred days old world at that point, so several of them spawned and all died to traps pretty quickly. 

And, today, when we won the Gorge for the first time with friends. We were so hyped, after spending so long trying to learn the damn recipies and failing for several months now. We still have like 2/3 of the book to go, but we discovered enough to actually win a game so that rocks.

One time I actually died to a red cap.

I remember I once thought that meatballs needed 4 morsels, since that's the first recipe I ever made meatballs with. I then went into a public server and saw a Wickerbottom going to every one of the 7 or 8 crockpots in camp and making meatballs with each one. I wondered how the heck she had the patience to kill 32 rabbits to feed the camp

Don't remember much from my early days of playing the game, although there is one moment that stands out.

I had joined a server that was nearing day 30, I ended up dying and somehow the host (another Webber) managed to guide me to his camp where I was able to revive. Shortly after Deerclops spawned and this man had like 4 spider queens and 7 T3 spider dens, so she got obliterated. I remember him saying something like "pick up the eyeball because the spiders will eat it".

Ooohhh, I just remembered, I thought there were multiple islands like the main land, so when I first encountered the edge of the ocean, I was really confused and thought, I'd messed up my settings. And I used to tell my friends that we would have to stash tons of birchnuts to survive winter. I also ran away screaming, when I first saw rocklobsters.

But the unexplicably dumbest thing I ever did was in Adventure mode, when I spent over 20 days in King of Winter, because I was waiting for another season, to harvest my farm crops...

Well uhh the gifs will speak for themselves.

1- My first boat in DST getting ready to sail the exciting new ocean content.. and then this happens.

2- the largest bridge choke-off point I’ve ever seen & how I got past it. (DS Solo)

3- The most embarrassing death I will ever experience in my DS/DST playing I Will NEVER be able to top this because I was well into at least chapter 3 of solo Adventures mode when this happened. I guess the good news is no matter HOW I die next time it can’t be any worse.

4-My first trip to Lunar Island I was hungry and starving so I tried to get some carrots only for them to animate to life and run away, so I see something called “Saladmander” and I’m like SALAD yup that’s food my life is saved, so I walk up to and attack it with a spear only to be stabbed to death violently by its tail a few seconds later.

I was afraid that Glommer would kill me too, fear the unknown.
Also memories of my world being ended because I stumbled upon Dragonfly.

Omg, one time my friends and I decided to try to fight bee queen without knowing anything about her except that she dropped an aura-reversing crown.

We also expected her health to be like... 4000 (like Deerclops).....

oh boy, were we wrong.

A bunch of experienced players taught me how to initiate spider wars as Webber. Also, one time I tried to attack a spider with a torch, lit up the whole forest and got kicked out of the server. Fun times!

I though you get wet goop if you use cooked ingredients in crockpot because it's gonna be overcooked.

i once picked up the eye bone and got scared of chester. Ran for god knows how long thinking the orange chest chasing me is gonna swallow me whole.

Encountered a walking cane corpse but i threw it away because i thought a walking cane is useless.

Tried to survive by only eating batilisk wings as wigfrid because I didnt know what suspicious dirt piles are.

I was scared of a mandrake i ran all night until it stopped following me

I starved multiple times because I was blooming and I didn't realize there was another way of getting food other than rabbits.

Also the classic opening mast while it's facing the land every single time during the early days of Return of Them.

Awww. Haha. Putting a berry on the ground would have lured away Bearger. This is how become a good player, though, even if the journey might seem long at times. xd

haha epic, I was wondering how bad can it be? Then noticed your fire staff. I remember I did something similar once, hitting a treeguard with a torch.

As for noob memories, I had so much fun when first starting in original DS, it was many many years ago and I think I never got passed Deerclops. I knew it was game over when I heard the roar, and hounds would kill me super often too. But I was improving from game to game and was loving it, the game felt soo hard.

Being afraid of waking up tree guards when chopping so i always plant the pines cones right after chopping a tree (i though tree guards spawn because how many trees you chop without plant another)

Also i remember one of my first worlds where i based near a pig village because i though they will protect me. One night i couldnt enter into my camp because was filled with werepigs. I never made a single base near pigs again

Way back in SP DS when Reign of Giants was still fairly new I was dying to Deerclops every Winter. At Dusk his stupid growl came and I was NOT prepared for the fight, he came up and broke my firepit that I used to actually see him and I was fighting him really poorly and getting smacked left and right. I couldn't fight him(I never entered the caves before and had no idea about lanterns and mining hats or anything) so I was running scared out of my mind at night but I really wanted to kill him for the first time. Started freezing, was dying and it finally turned daytime. I couldn't warm myself up but I was trying to kill him. I was getting soooooo far but he got a final smack in me and I died, resurrected from a touch stone I ran back to where he was and he was gone. I was flipping out because he was just nowhere on the map and I tried searching for him, nearly dying of freezing again.

I finally found him and tried to fight him again but I was basically dead at that point, freezing my butt off and a single hit would have killed me with no armor. But he happened to smack a Beefalo when trying to hit me, all the Beefalo jumped in and managed to actually finish him off before he got the final hit on me.

 

Overcoming Deerclops was one of the biggest highlights of the game to me. I didn't technically fight him all the way since the Beefalo finished the job, but the absolute chaos that ensued while frustrating at the time was something I look back on fondly. Really gave you a feeling of ''Huh, maybe I CAN survive this game?''
