On the Topic of Mandrakes...

Why not make Mandrakes a really potent weed? Or a special weed-crop hybrid. Have it consume all nutrients in bulk, and stress other plants out. Maybe even make it rot if you don't take care of all 6 criteria (meaning it wouldn't have a giant variant). Limit it to 1 per tile too or something.

I think making it a very difficult plant to take care of with special conditions would be infinitely more enjoyable than limiting it to Klaus/deconstruction weirdness.

I don't think giving it seeds would be a good idea, but leaving it entirely up to low RNG doesn't sound great either.

Regardless, thoughts? Can't say I'm expecting anything less than harsh opposition, heh.

Would a giant variant be just an ordinary Elder Mandrake?

Perhaps you could plant dead Mandrake and with precise care and solicitude it would grow to a Mandrake Hill?

It could be used as a plant-kind defense of our farm.

And after that we only need Zombies introduction to DST :D

Honestly the Elder Mandrake’s creepy unhappy looks make me highly uncomfortable for ever plucking, killing, cooking, eating, or using in a item ingredient a Mandrake baby....

I could just imagine these things going around like the city guard pigs in Hamlet Mauling you to death with their Halbreds for plucking a few flowers out their Gardens.. except these would maul you for picking Mandrakes.

In fact: Klei did clearly say that Neglecting your crops won’t kill them, but you might regret it..

I think a living angry face looking plant mauling me to death would certainly end up being regret!

So many crazy things they could do.. your carrot crops could turn into Carrat and then the part Rat part Carrot creature then proceeds to eat your other crops or simply just run off so you gotta chase them down again.

I think in a game like Don’t Starve & Don’t Starve Together the more food references, and living food animal/plant hybrids the better.

But that’s just my opinion others may disagree.

I would love to see Elder Mandrake in DST though.. they look intimidating.

It looks very bad a s s  i like it

Elder Mandrakes reminded me of how they like the moon. So maybe every full moon a mandrake has a chance of springing up on a plot or something? Makes it semi-relevant to Return of Them too.

Slightly off topic kinda relevant...why doesn't a crying mandrake count as music for my crops? Tested. Sadness.

Burning living logs doesn't work either afaik. Shame.

Mods are going to be great once people have time to study all the new code.

I think I'd like more plants to be harvestable and reproducible, the panflute deconstruction method is a bunch of nonsense, but if the farming method was balanced enough, I think it would be a fair trade with enough effort put in.

You also have to factor in that only intermediately skilled players are going to know what to do with Mandrakes.. there’s still the people out there picking them, burning them, and eating them for their hunger, sanity and health values.

For THOSE people Mandrakes wouldn’t be anymore important than “insert random food or item here”

Its only the players who actually know all the Mandrakes uses who are going to actually be benefiting most off of them.

But this a two way door, it swings open in one direction for those noobs to have access to them, and it swings open ease of Renew ability for those experienced players who get angry when said noob “Wastes” their limited Mandrakes..

There certainly still needs to be some degree of challenge involved- such as plant care requiring ingredients from distant lands (giving the boats an actual use beyond just I’ll do it but it feels optional..) AND IF that Mandrake plant does not get the care it needs it goes bad.. and you then have Elder Mandrakes grow from them and they then proceed to maul you for improper care.

I feel like In a game called Don’t Starve there should be not just the survivors themselves, but other constant inhabitants trying not to starve, and I think Angry animal/plant Hybrids fit into that role nicely.

Renewable Mandrakes sounds like it would prevent a lot of players from cursing poor children out when they run around eating them, but yeah that just my opinion.

That would be real nice, I was hoping Klei consider adding more plants with this agriculture system after this update, not just veggies and fruits like we got for Warly's arrival (appreciated tho), but weeds, flowers... there's a lot of potential if some of the updates content include a plant, or any resource you can cultivate, all it needs is a different growing progress eventually so it can be more unique.

Let's think of it, Moon phases could be a nice idea, but difference places between caves / surface too (or moon island and biomes, specificity)... maybe keep those for future plant ideas.

Now for Mandrakes : they like to do that (annoying or cute depending of players) song when they follow someone, why not imagine something like make the usage of the One Man's Band a requirement to grow the plant, or it will lock in place or die (from boredom ?), or take other mandrakes out to support (by countless and endless screaming) their growing friends. That just sounds fun ! :)

I didn't read this properly, so I thought you were asking for something way more fun and illegal than what you really said.

Technically the Constant has no law enforcement or government so nothing is illegal. :p

A mandrake being possible to obtain through arduous farming is the best idea I've ever heard in at least the past 10 minutes.

Agreed! Pan Flutes feel weirdly limited when literally every other source of putting enemies to sleep is reliably renewable (And in the case of 2 of them -  much cheaper!). Dragonpies are a lot easier to get now due to giant crops yielding at least 2 fruits, and saladmanders giving guaranteed drops - so having mandrake soup actually be a viable use of the little guys would be nice.

Well that, and I feel the deconstruction staff method of gaining mandrakes back is very cheesy and non-intuitive.

Is it fair that Mandrakes aren't even the most OP thing in the game so why not just have them grow? If that were the case then I hope Klei removes them from Klaus's drops cause it's better to just farm them then or hope they grow in the garden. It's, like, one time soup you can make and panflutes aren't that used commonly in the game unless the couple of bosses you wanna deal with by cancelling their attacks (aka dragonfly's rage), of course - that's very useful, but most bosses are now immune to sleeps or sleep for a very short time and it kinda limits their use.
