That seemed to be what the first ROT trailer implied. That a huge land mass fell into the ocean. Wormwood is a tiny particle of the moon, hence his chest gem. Or the entire Return of Them plotline revolves around Their influence strengthening past the Moon's limits, therefore fragmenting the moon.
