You can however get skins for those characters from presents. For merely following Klei's progression through betas they've given out copies of Hot Lava and Hamlet for trying them out to those in it for free (everyone who signed up for it). Some of their staff are very active here on the forums and aren't afraid to talk to the community. Kindness is usually defined by doing acts that benefit others while not providing any benefit to yourself. They didn't need to keep prices for their titles that reasonable/affordable, the free beta copies weren't needed to be done, and their communication certainly is an oddity in today's standards of what "gaming" companies do. From these, I would say that they're much more kind than other game companies out there at the moment. However, these are also all good business strategies. They build a foundation for keeping a following of people who will spread good will via word of mouth, and that's worth a lot when it comes to games- reputation plays a big role in purchase decisions. The companies that don't do these are being short sighted and are getting bigger capital now, at the price of consumer trust. People who signed up for the Hamlet beta ended up getting Hamlet for free later. Owners of Hamlet ended up receiving Wormwood for free in Don't Starve Together. Klei have been extremely generous to this point.
