There's a difference between CHALLENGING and BAD GAME DESIGN

Recommended Posts

Let me preface this post by saying I have 1511 hours in DST and 554 hours in DS. I'm good at this game and I know that If i'm struggling at something, then there's a serious problem. I understand that lots of hours =/= lots of skill, but I can't think of a better way to show that I'm experienced with the game. Perhaps it'll help if I include the inventory showcase I have on my steam profile:

Notice the two proof of purchase items. Yes, I'm aware that the Tesla Coil lantern was demoted to Elegant, but I heavily disagree with this decision. I believe that people who preordered the Pop!s should be given a special Proof of Purchase rarity version of the skins, similar to how people who participated in the Cyclum puzzle's first run were given a Loyal version of the Tragic Torch, to differentiate them from the floods of new players who've done the puzzle more recently. What happened to those days, Klei? With all of these half-sets of skins lately, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Anyway. I recently bought the Trapper Hat skin for my SO, I'd like you to keep in mind that this skin costs $10.76, which I could have (and would much rather have) spent on 4 packs of Trident Gum, and wanted to see how it looks in game. So we hopped onto my day 400 dedicated server and decided to go catcoon hunting. What a mistake that was.

Catcoons, in my opinion, are some of the most blatantly untested bullcrap in this game. Despite existing for over 4 years, it's so incredibly obvious that they were thrown into the game without any sort of playtesting, and then abandoned for the next shiny new piece of content in the RoG DLC (which seemed to improve the game at the time, but, If i'm being completely honest, did nothing but harm in the long run. Perhaps I'll make another post on that later, as it really shook me when I recently noticed the early warning signs of Klei's modern design philosophies.)

I'd like to repeat myself. I have 1511 hours. I was with my equally-experienced SO. This is a day 400 server. All of these things point in favor of me being good at this game. But guess what? These cat *******s had different plans. If you look at the wiki, you'll see that catcoons are listed as having 3-4 range. Now, I have no doubt that this is how catcoons are supposed to function, as the wiki has always been full of talented code spelunkers, but I'm sure somewhere between Klei spending 4 minutes coding the catcoon, spending 20 making a ****ing sandwich, and spending 2 minutes implementing it into the game, this range was royally screwed into the catcoon range we have today.

We had 8 logsuits and 8 football helmets. We split them into 4 for each of us, and went to clear out the deciduous forest of its catcoons. This sounds easy, right? They're cats. What are they going to do? **** in the sand? Chase a ****ing butterfly? Evidently, nobody at Klei has ever seen a cat in their life. Within 5 minutes of the start of our catcoon raid, we had both died and the world had been reset.

I cried. I'm going to be completely honest, I cried. I was able to show no emotion when my father, nephew, and grandpa were all claimed by cancer. I remained stoic at their funerals. I sat and watched with a blank face as they were lowered in the ground. I'm not an emotional man, but I was brought to tears by what's supposed to be a silly video game to keep my mind at ease after a hard day of work.

I work hard nearly every day of my life. I've got to deal with ****ing, screaming, vomiting babies nearly every day of my life.Years ago, I planned to have kids of my own one day. Now? I'm almost glad that my SO is infertile. Kids are disgusting little monsters and I can't believe there was a point in my life where I ever wanted to be a dad. I don't know if christians have some kind of legal loophole that allows them to pay less than minimum wage, but I can't even challenge them on it as I'm being paid under the table. I don't have a good life, and video games are one of the few distractions from it. The last thing I want is for one of my favorite games to stress me the **** out too.

I don't want advice, I don't want people to smugly reply with videos of speedrunners killing every mob in 2.5 hours, and I don't want people replying for no reason other than to question my skill. I'm not a noob who didn't read the "uncompromising wilderness survival game" tagline, I'm an experienced player who's ticked off by awful balancing and awful marketing decisions for what I previously considered to be my favorite game. I guess Shovel Knight will be taking that slot again.

I know Klei won't give half a **** about this. But as someone who frequently recommends Klei games to my friends (even a few who work at larger game companies,) someone who met my best friend and SO of 2 years on a DST server, and someone who even named my puppy "Wilson," it pains me to say that I won't be voting for Klei in the Steam Awards this year. I just can't support the direction that this company has been going over these past few years.

I Have several things i'd like to say..

First of all, I think this is a bug. With 600 hours, and multiple day 1000+ worlds, i have never come across this problem. ever. There's either something wrong with your game, lag, or some new bug. I hunt catcoons as a weak-hitter, with an axe, and i've never had this problem. it might also be there's an animation bug, and they use thier "Lunge" attack without it showing. You might want to report this in the bug section.
-
Why were you hunting all the catcoons? there's no reason to do that, at all. You could have made a catcoon farm or something more usefull instead of raiding them? This sounds kind of like karma for doing such a dumb thing in a world, and ,considering you call yourself an experienced player, saying your hours multiple times, I would think you'd know better than to do this. I Can agree, that's sort of bulls***, but i'm sure it could have been avoided.
-
If something like a team wipe happens, there's one magic button you can press: Rollback.
-
Why the pointless skin flexing/hour flexing? Hours nor skins make you good at the game. People can be gifted skins, or just buy them for like 4 dollars. That just felt like flexing (And hours can be just AFK hours.)
-
Fifth thing: How is this an "awful marketing decision"?? What does a bug that might not even be a bug, and just be something related to you lagging, have to do with marketing? i'm genuinely curious about what you meant by that. The fact you decided that this game was "Terribly Balanced", "Awfully marketed", and the developers are bad by extension, because you made a bad decision, and due to a bug, got punished by it, is kind of dumb, too. You can do what you want, It just seems like you're complaining about something that might not be the devs fault, Depending on what ping you had. (And no, saying "I Was hosting/I Have great internet" doesn't mean you can't lag. I Also host most of my worlds, and i have a pretty above-average internet, and i still lag massively sometimes.)

Err, something doesn't read right here. In the title, you suggest a complaint regarding a troublesome balancing issue, yet the post sidetracks the idea right from the start with a minor gripe about a specific item skin's rarity value instead, and so far I fail to see any connection regarding the two subjects.

With that aside, and also disregarding the weird stuff I skimmed at the end, looks like you've just had a bad run with lackluster ping, or something. Definitely not normal, might want to check your mods out.

I'm confused... a catcoon should only deal 5 damage with armor on according to the wiki, and should die in a few hits. Even if you had bad lag that make you get hit a ton of times, how would it come to this? :S

There doesn't seem to be a reason to post this here then. Either a discussion thread is used for discussion or it's not.

This would be far more suited for the feedback & suggestions area but even then most of this post is far from constructive.

With the killing all the catcoons (for some reason), I'm reminded of that thread about "pranks" pulled on other players, and how one person was SO PROUD of the "prank" where they killed AND destroyed the spawns of _every single last meat source_...in a world full of Wigfrids?  Reminds me of that.  Only that had a point...awful though it was...  (I don't know if the person who wrote that post is still here, as I forget their name.)

But "dude, it's only a social experiment, bro!" And so is rolling back and/or installing ice-fishing mods.  :)

...Notorious

Why is there that red-marked distance between your character and the Catcoon?!

why_distance

..when you should've been right beside MisterCat, making its visage intimately acquainted with your Ham Bat.

And talking about Ham Bat, using it you don't even need armor, just smite it - not once would it retaliate before going the cross-bone style hitting floor like a rock. Pls don't tell me you were trying some kind of weird kiting strat?!

Also are you sure said server doesn't have some mod that buffs Catcoons? Saw something like that in a Electroely's video, with cat brought up to uber-boss level, aka a lot of HP and dmg-per-hit. Have you been pranked?

Hm. Or are you pranking us? Looking again at Electro's challenge clip, your print-screen actually seems taken right from there... HMM!

¿Maybe you have some bug or issue with mods?

Also, I think some things in this thread were unnecessary actually.

Threads like these make me lose hope in humanity.

Then you hate JohnWatson, but if you actually looked deeper into his very interesting threads, you will discover that he can actually write very long sequences of texts like ''I want my log back'' featured as a steam guide, sadly this beatiful creation was drowning in useless guides that tell player what to do but doesn't expain how to do it, this is where JohnWatson is superior because his brain does two things : a ) Not write pathetic guides because he knows that noobs have to get better at the game and not pathetically scream REEE everytime they die, he makes sure they learn how to do it. b ) he suffers from scripturam inferebanta latin wording for writing mania, you see JohnWatson likes to write these long sequences of texts therefore he can write 24 hours a day 7 days a week 4 weeks a month 12 months a year 100 years a century, I get it, it's very annoying but once you read into the deeper story that stimulates your subconsious mind and makes sure you start believing in god Wes, you will discover tons of euphoria that only JohnWatson can create. Thank you for understanding.

Spoiler

@JohnWatson did I do it right?

Goodbye.

I thought this was a Watson troll, tbh. I have literally killed so many catcoons looking for a hat that I spawned Krampus (and got the sack, on  day 7 on a public server!) and never once has one of them hit me back. They stun lock, so you don’t need to kite them.

the amount of people taking this post seriously is too damm high

The amount of manure posting in general on these forums grows higher and higher each day just because some individuals get bored and think too highly of their "creativity" and/or get frustrated by game's direction plus seen problems in their books. Being excessively sarcastic won't make your opinion matter more; and a "circle jerk" between self-assumed "dissident" status of the same 3-4 recurrent "specialu" people with fixed ideas pushed at nauseam gets old and annoying rather quick.
