I've actually started turning the apngs to gifs (because I found a software package for Linux that can do that and really wanted to test it ) and arrange the frames I want to have as reffis, so I can create one png with my favourite frames for each creature. I still have no idea how to combine two apngs without going in and combining them frame by frame. I mean, during embryonic stages, the organism doesn't have operational lungs, but you still gotta supply it with oxygen somehow. Making use of a structure that grows automatically to serve this very purpose is probably the easiest way to do so. (I've been thinking earlier that Gravitas was able to directly make clones with the pot after scanning the originals... but they only got their DNA, so they had to make traditional clones first.) So I would either have to convert them into GIFs (which I would rather not, because the whole reason why I was making them APNGs was to get around the insane quality loss that occurs with GIFs), or I dunno...find a way to convert it into a video, compile it that way, save it as an image sequence and then make it back into an APNG. And the "lost" shockworm became lost for a reason...because the devs didn't like the idea of aggressive mobs in the game at the point of development they were at.
