Come up with a snappy server name.

lately my server names are along the lines of:

"wilderness server with random seasons, enter at your own risk"

"i will not revive you if you die in the first ten days"

"wes-only, no chatting, quiet please"

"i can survive just fine on my own but you are welcome to join as long as you don't bother me"

big surprise, no one joins my servers either.

I dont think I should tell anyone how to name their servers either.
I'm obviously not good at this kind of stuff.

My servers:
Kill Santa Vol.1
Default world with some Mods on
Burn something and I hound you
Kill Sabta Vol.2 (obviously I failed at this tusk and died)
Survive PMS Antlion (Is what I am playing now)

How about Klava tesara infinitas
I got it years ago from the TV series Stargate SG1 and it means something along the lines of " The key to eternal power "

If your server isn't dedicated maybe you need to add an inviting description and let people know when you plan to shut down? The possibility that you might end the game at any moment is probably more of a deterrent than the name.

My server names tend to be named after whatever they are if it's something specific, the time of year, or an experimental new way of playing I'm trying out.  Examples include:

The March of Civilization  ("EXPERIMENT.  Now with (whatever new tech I've gotten up to!"))
Starving in a Winter Wonderland  ("Note:  Wonderland may not actually be wintery.  Or wonderful.")--I named my main server to this during the holidays.  :)

My general servers tend to have darkly tongue-in-cheek names along the lines of "We're all gonna die, YAY!"  My main two being:

Happy Nature Trail O' Death ("Come survive and thrive with us!  Actual survival not guaranteed.") and
Funtime Wilderness Extravaganza!!* ("Survival fun for the whole family!")

But if I put in mentions of all my mods and/or world tweaks, it'd take up way too much space.  So, make sure you look at those things before you leap in.  (In general, actually.)  If you don't like random season lengths or pickles, make sure you know before you go!  :D

So yeah basically my server names...are goofy and probably too long.  Heh.  (The parts in parenthesees are the _descriptions_, not part of the actual names--but you figured that out, you smart reader you.)

*For full effect, you have to say it in an old-timey carnival barker voice. And whaddya KNOW, Maxwell, Wolfgang and Wes used to work for an old-timey circus...

You need not put a list of mods in. You can check them all within the menu, same with map settings. The popularity of pubs depends on a variety of things. A description is a must for me. I know the admin is trying if it exists. List the languages your moderating team can use. It lets people plan ahead. Similarly servers named differently than JohnDoe's World. Ping is a factor, settings as well. If you have a group of some repute, link it while leaving the server public. And inform people of randoms being welcome. Way too often some <self-redacted> rolls a pub for whatever reason and kicks clients either before or right after saying hello.

As for names, I typically reference some text of culture resulting in 95-99% not getting it and joining out of sheer curiosity. The name must be relevant to our plans. A caves-only server? Six Feet Under. The cosy place we build a shrine to the hallowed Potato Cup? The Name of the Nome. A world we rolled with @GiddyGuy? Giddy Up! attracted many. The Hallowed Nights event? The Haunting Grounds of the Hallowed (since that's when I got my forum title). Winter's Feast? Krampus Klaus Is Coming to Camp. That big world for teaching newbies, with the appropriate description? Kindergarten Cops. Year of the Gobbler? Reign of Gobblers. If you can't reference anything suitable, good old Blight and Famine cannot hurt.

One more thing: all our roleplaying servers use the (RPG) tag in their name and have the FAQ linked through a Google shortcut.

love these.

my perfect server where i allow no funny business and everything is extra cruel:

title: the wild world of wickerbottom

description: deerclops & bearger & moosgoose, oh my!

my server where i only live underground (great, big zork fan here):

title: the underground empire of wickerbottom

description: you are likely to be eaten by a cave worm

and, pretty much, still no joiners. i try not to take it personally when servers titled "yoloswag420's world" have max players at day 3 and my world never gets so much as a solicitation call. but then i get all grouchy and change my server names to mean/off-putting titles, then relent and go back to something normal, and then unwrap my fourth pleated shirt for the week and eat a lonely fistful of jam.

Seeing as how some of the servers that _are_ popular have really lame or generic names...I'm curious now as to WHAT you could be naming yours that potentially drives people away, SkyCommision!  : P

Although I'm betting that's not it. The ones with stupid, generic, or mispelled names are probably full because they're run by a group of friends who already knew each other, or schoolkids who out of school all at the same time, etc. Probably also something to do with people living close by so they get good ping.  Considering that, as said before, servers with names like "(Playername)'s World" can be popular.

And I agree with Arlesienne that you should ALWAYS have a description.  Always.  Doesn't have to be long or fancy, but it shows that the person in charge at least somewhat cares, and took some time and effort to make their game sound appealing.  And if it turns out to be really clever/funny as well, hey!  Even better!

I usually name mine

"Stan's Previously Owned Servers"

But wait there's more!

Did I tell you about the fireproof structures?

I think I can do without that particular piece of junk.

Okay, but don't come whining to me if someone's playing as Willow.

But wait there's more!

Did I tell you about the Anti-Deerclops turrets?

I think I can do without that particular piece of junk.

Okay, but when a big one-eyed giant comes a smashing your camp, you know who's paying for it!

Usually I just name my servers something like "Against the Grain Public", and today I hosted a server under the name of just "Chester's Eyebone". For the most part it got little attention, but I was playing at like 11PM so who's to blame. I usually put stuff in the description among the lines of "Welcome! Join, meet new friends, learn new tactics, and most importantly, enjoy all the cool stuff!" I don't like leaving the server alone, and I disabled votekick because I'm usually there anyway.

A month or two back I remember hosting a server, and somehow it got a crapload of players on it, close to about 8, I believe. It was going pretty well too - everyone had a specific job, and after awhile we could all just relax and build cool bases. Sadly the world eventually got reset by the random guy dying when the server is empty. Man, good times...

Also, do you guys think that whether or not it's a group server affects if players play on it or not? I have a group by the name of Commision Corporations and I've always wondered if that's it or not. Some people may filter out groups to get rid of the three Strictly Unprofessional servers, but I don't really know. Any tips?

tl;dr: I hosted a server called "Chester's Eyebone Public", once got ~8 players on a server, and asked if labelling it as a group server affects player income.

I only have had two servers: "boss exhibit (under construction)" and "xedlords world of insanity" xedlords world of insanity is like the stupidest (and probably laggyest) server ever and is covered in random items and structures and infinitely burning fires and thousands of mobs you can join any of them if you want :wilson_laugh:
