Do you all tame beefalo?

Recommended Posts

I used to start taming as soon as I found a beefalo but it started getting real old being limited on what I can realistically accomplish in the first winter when it was still being tamed.

Nowadays I don’t bother until I’ve completed all the boss/ruins/farming stuff I can realistically accomplish in the first year.

I wish taming didn’t take so long. Or at least add more ways to reduce the time.

yes sure. its always good to start taming after they had a red ass. like in autunum. actually it doesnt matter which season it is. you just need to have a lots of food (twigs) stored before you start taming.

if you want a fighter beef then plant some flowers at his pen and just ride him by standing on the flowers and holding attack so he kills butterflies.

beef taming seems very hard and it needs a lot of ressources to do so but if you have done it few times you will see its not.

No, it takes waaaaay too long, and the only use beefalo have is to explore the island faster and carry the marble pieces around, which both only need doing once AND aren't necessary.

"But wait, can't you use beefalo in combat?" Well little timmy, why would I want to use a beefalo in combat when I alone do it just fine?

Beefalo taming needs a buff.

Also taming is near impossible during mating season, ugh.

I have waited for this moment my whole life

AHEM

Day 457. We're three people, Wendy (Me), Willow, And Webber. Me and Willow decide to gather beefalo, and thus, we begin preparing.

With the help of a legendary person, whose name I can't quite remember... Something like Justin Bucket? Well, whoever it was, He taught us what we had to know. And thus, we prepared. Willow gathered thousands upon thousands of sticks, And I took a pair of beefalo from the herd. We quickly penned and named them:

Willow's trusty steed, the Strongest of the beefalo. Trained in the incredible arts of fighting bees and attacking innocent butterflies, WINTER, The Ornery Beefalo.

Wendy's Morose Speedster, Wlhelma! Wendy no longer likes trampolines because of Wlhelma. Long story short, always feed your Beefalo before riding.

Wendy and Willow took good care of them, by following all procedures that one may have to do:

- But how do we begin?

To begin, just feed the nearest beefalo a piece of grass. Don't bother with anything fancy, All of beefalo's stats for domestication and such will start at 0. Wendy learned this the hard way.

*quiet sobbing can be heard...* "I could have EATEN that dragonpie..."

- Keep them fed!

Beefalo eat a LOT. Like, a LOT. You don't really need to feed them though! As Wendy and Willow would tell you, keeping them fed merely requires salt lick. If you can keep salt licks always up, you can keep your beefalo fed forever.

However, if travel is what you want, You'll need to pack up. 4 Dragonpies will feed a beefalo for a single day. Beefalo will not eat meats, however. See Julius Bucket's guide for some actual numbers, or just look it up.

- KEEP AN EYE ON IT, AND ON EVERYONE WHO MAY AFFECT IT!

A Sad story is about to be heard...

As previously mentioned, Webber was also there. Webber didn't want a beefalo, so he didn't get one.

However, this Webber was the host. When Wendy and Willow slept, He'd stay awake exploring the world and gathering resources for their survival. However, he never fed the beefalo. All of his time alone caused the salt licks to go, and alas, Winter and Wlhelma forgot their owners and ran away.

When Wendy and Willow came back, shock covered their faces!

"Where is she!?" Said Willow, her face terrified.

"I don't know!" Said Webber, as honest as he could.

"Like everything in my miserable life, it's gone.." Wendy said, holding the saddle made of a thousand butterflies she worked so hard to give her trusty steed.

So Wendy and Willow went for the search, Looking everywhere for where their trusted friends were.

Oh! How Lucky! There she is! It's Winter!

Willow rejoiced, running to her 'Smelly Horse-Cow', happy to see her again.

But, Alas, Wendy's joy was short-lived, (as if that was any news,) As Wlhelma was nowhere to be found.

From that day on, the two learned something important:

Beefalo require care, and, just like everything else in your miserable life, will leave if you don't pay attention to it.

To summarize:

- DON'T DO THIS EARLY ON! Make sure you have a stable source of food and resources before you begin this.

- KEEP THEM FED! Salt licks when you aren't travelling, and make sure to know how much food you have to take for your travels. Plan ahead! When in doubt,  It's better to be overprepared than underprepared.

- IF SUCH IS THE CASE, MAKE SURE THE HOST TAKES CARE OF YOUR BEEFALO WHEN YOU'RE AWAY! please

- LOVE YOUR BEEFALO! don't shave it, don't abuse it, or else your cow will kill you. this should be obvious

- DON'T MAKE THE GLOSSOMER SADDLE! wendy grew depression after spending so much time doing that

Hope this helped!

I am an extremely fervent and experienced tamer and here's the major problems with taming

1. returning feral once domesticated. Reaching domestication should be a point of no return. You should NEVER have to worry about this once the job is done. Keeping it alive is enough of a chore without worrying about a unstoppable process.

2. heat during training. No, the beef attacking players isn't the problem. You can just wear a beef hat and continue training. It's the beef suiciding to frog rains or bees or mooselings or even literally a single pigman that makes it terribly annoying.

3. AI wanders back to the closest savana when the (unrefuelable) salt lick is destroyed. Combine this with heat and it'll slowly walk to its death by attacking something it shouldn't. "Just make a pen!". yeah I guess, but that still doesnt stop frogs.

4. not enough animals to tame. It seems blatant the system was designed to not exclusively be hard coded to beefalos. Koalefant pls klei. Or even ewecus or varg, Anything that shares the beef animations. I don't care.

5. Cave support. I don't think anyone is really bothered beefalo would have a hard time descending a set of stairs. Just make it happen.

6. personal suggestion, but more equippables for beef. The gorge beefalo has cool metal hooves and neck armor. Put this in somehow.

I usually play alone, and usually get very, very bored. I'll usually just spend my spring killing butterflies to get the glossamer saddle and then tame a rider beef, and use it to fill in the rest of the map, assemble the chess pieces, etc. Realistically if you're playing alone having the sonic beef is helpful, because it significantly cuts travel time if you weren't fortunate enough to have World's Best Wormholes(TM) generation. Pudgy beef is useless besides something cute to look at (Sanity itself is trivial by the time you'll tame a beefalo) and the ornery beefalo is outclassed by a dark sword which takes a second to craft out of resources you will eventually get oceans of.

Making beefalo taming easier and less resource punishing would open up a wave of new potential for items. For example, we already have 3 very distinct beefalo (One of which is functionally useless), so why not make more saddles that expand on it? For instance - We all already know that if you have an ornery beefalo, you stick a war saddle on it. If you have the others, you use glossamer. By effectively making the date you can tame a beefalo be earlier in the game, you can make "basic" versions of equipment with more bare bones resources, and later upgrade to something that brings beefalo into a rightful place.

Let me give an example:

Let's say you want to get an ornery beefalo. A theoretical update has came out that drastically cuts the resources needed to do so, enough that you could logically, easily do it even in the first autumn if you're sprinting towards that goal specifically. Now, you have your ornery beefalo, but haven't found the time to get enough steel wool for the War Saddle. Now maybe you can just craft a "Pointy Saddle" that slightly increases the beef's damage, is fairly cheap, and does a decent enough job. Now you'll ask: But what stops it from being outclassed by the dark sword later? Well, add another tier of saddle, potentially even ancient-made. Dramatically increases damage and/or also gives the beefalo defense. That would buff beefalo to a good standing (Enough to justify keeping a beefalo around all the way to late game) while not breaking them early on. Adding stuff like "Luxurious Saddles" that increase sanity gain for that fatso beef you keep around or something slower/faster than glossamer to fully flesh out the mechanic would really make it more fascinating, and fill in the hole that beefalo taming seems to already want to fill in which is "Not necessary, but great filler for when you're bored!"

Taming a Beefalo is at the same time one of the most beautiful and frustrating things about DST.
I always install a mod on my servers to make the process much faster. It doesn't make sense to spend hours and hours doing the same thing, it's NOT fun. It makes no sense to have the perennial concern that the Beefalo will commit suicide or return to the wild and I will have to start all over again. It's NOT fun.
At least, with the mod, I can domesticate one in half a day and if it dies or returns to the wild state not a single tear. :afro:

In most cases, taming beefalo with all your love, food

then they turn into delicious meaty stew in the end

I found this suggestion is great, we should have at least two kinds of armor for beefalo

otherwise the beefalo would be killed easily when you are not around sometimes, this is painful

it can be better for the armor preventing players shaving beefalo, and your beefalo not gonna drop obedience to zero

something looks like this

The Problem with beefs is, you deal with them for [infinity] days to tame them, then you hope you got the right type of Beefalo that you wanted, you need a saddle that breaks because beefs shake them off, feed them your food

All that for
Hounds to kill it literally in 2 minutes, Heat kicks in and your mount wants to kill you and return to the group, Go Wild again because you forgot to refill the salt lick which you still have to craft

its not so hard like you guys all say. taming beefalo is just 15 days. you need to feed him in morning and in mid day. and ride him for 30 sec. no need longer. if you do that you get a rider. its not a lottery what you get. only if you feed him to much he will became a fatty. and beefs never shake there saddles off. you have to be very bad to him so he does that. if you want a fighter then just kill 2-3 butetrflies evry day with him. plant few flowerrs at his pen.

if hounds attack or a giant then you need to jump off the beef and run away from the beef. or you use the beef to run away from the hounds or giant. but never stay with your beef in dangerous situations. specially if hes not tamed yet. then you need to jump immiditly off him and run away when soemthing happens.

and you need to make his pen in a safe place.

having a beef hat shoudnt be a big problem

gong wild is a real problem. if you forget him for a while all work was for nothing. thats shiiiiiiiiiii

also salt licks doesnt help forever. you cant tame a beef and then let him forever at saltlicks. his taming goes down even when he always has saltlicks. its just slower then without saltlicks.

you need to ride him evry 10 days for a bit or/and brush him once after hes finished tamed.

the first few beefs are hard to tame. but after you have tamed 3-4 times beef you will see its actually np and you can make it beside your normal gameplay

I always tame one when my camp is rather complete and I can start side projects (like beehives and traps)

It's useful because I play Wes, but otherwise I don't think I would ever tame one. It's too much work for the potential damage of a dark sword.
