WX-78 Rework Ideas

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow WX-78 mains,
I came here to ask you what ideas do you have for WX-78 Rework (if there will be one)
One of my ideas is a Workshop Table or something like that, where we can upgrade our stats and so, like more power in punches, electric punches, more health, more resistance to attacks, and so.
We'll be able to use gears for these upgrades, I don't know about eating them

I'd scrap both the gear eating and the current overcharge system and rebuild the character around a (hopefully simple) modular upgrade system. Like so:

  • WX has 3 Module Slots that can be equipped with various Modules, which can be crafted in a Robotics(?) tab using Gears and other stuff.
  • Health, Hunger and Sanity have a maximum of 100 by default, but increase by 25 for each equipped Module. (So a maxed out WX will have 175 in each stat.)
  • Modules would have a short calibration period (1-2 minutes?) before they take effect to prevent rapid swapping.
  • WX can still eat stale and spoiled food without penalty.
  • They also take more damage from wetness.
  • Electricity-powered modules could generate heat and possibly lead to overheating if overused?

As for the modules themselves (be warned, I suck at names):

  • Reinforced Chassis - Raises max Health by 50(ish?).
  • Co-Processor - Raises max Sanity by 50.
  • Improved Furnace - Raises max Hunger by 50.
  • Electric Battery - Stores power from lightning strikes, lightning rods, electric attacks... and maybe volt goat horns and electrical doodads?
  • Electric Motor - Consumes stored power to move at 1.50x speed.
  • Electric Plating - Consumes stored power to deal extra electric damage every time WX deals or receives a melee attack.
  • Electric Scanner/Beacon - Consumes stored power to activate night vision (scanner) or emit light (beacon).
  • Electric Cloaker(I told you I suck at names) - Consumes stored power to lose aggro and turn WX-78 invisible.

Or something like that. Honestly, since WX is a robot, they could go completely nuts with their refresh. Make them get rusted (less max health) from the rain and need gears to fix it. Replace Hunger with Fuel or something, so they just burn food and fuelables to increase it, but need to restore health and sanity in some other way. The list just goes on and on.

Easily the best wx refresh/rework ideas I've seen!! Would be super cool to mix and match these for different combos. You could even just do all 3 boring but effective plus to stats modules to have him as he is now but with slightly lower stats (400 health is a bit nuts). I especially like that he'd get 25 in each stat for each module he has regardless of what you choose.

Battery, Motor and Beacon for exploring/gathering.

Chassis, Battery and Plating for bosses, maybe processer instead of Chassis for certain bosses or Motor instead of Chassis for those who prefer pure kiting to any tanking.

Furnace, Battery and Beacon for long sailing trips

Battery, Motor and Plating for Mobbing.

Battery, Motor and Cloaker for avoiding combat and getting tasks done.

The possibilities are amazing!

Only things I can maybe add to this already great idea is Thermoelectric Battery - a module that stores energy from heat sources instead of electric sources (overheating level is higher when using this module but you can still overheat) - a reason to have a hot thermal stone on hand outside of winter would be pretty neat - can also use Furnaces, the hot summer sun, dwarf stars, adorable larvae etc.

Also Organic Matter Transference Battery - Hunger and Health values from Food are halved and the other half of healing/hunger values generate/stores that much energy instead.

Just feel like it would be cool to have alternative power sources!

  • Reduce the sound WX makes when overcharged. This one is a no brainer.
  • Have a better way to solo overcharge. Moslings are good during Spring, tele staves are no fun, and its essentially tied to Wicker's The End Is Nigh, which is no fun either since she hasn't been reworked yet.
  • Give WX an overcharge meter. We already have a client-side version mod as well as calculators to tell us how long WX is overcharge for, might as well add it to the game. It's generally not a surprise when WX loses charge.
  • WX needs to take damage from wetness properly. WX only takes damage if it's raining, not if WX drowned, failed a row/got hit by a wave, or splashed with Water Balloons. The damage is also negligible as it's only really a problem during a Spring start.
  • Use gears to make components to make upgrade modules/craftables, whatever modules they can come up with (they have lots of opportunities for this since WX is a robot).

I can see Klei nerfing how high his max stats go, and I can also see them nerfing the overcharge for the 2nd time.

But so long as he gets more stuff, especially craftables like what @QuartzBeam suggested, it should be in a solid rework.

Quartzbeam has got the best ideas, I love the idea of modules and power and i've been itching for more science in a "game full of science and magic", but to add on, I'd like to see some perks of theirs "fixed".

Firstly, the wetness downside quite literally relies on Pre-RoG mechanics. A time when the wetness meter didn't exist. Wx-78 doesn't take damage from wetness, they take damage from rain. Throw some waterballoons on yourself! Nothing happens! They never bothered to update their downside to actually work with the wetness meter, and i'd like to see this fixed.

Secondly, add/fix the perk with being immune to electric attacks They're supposed to be immune to moongleams, volt goats, and whatever other electric type attacks you can name, but unfortunately as of now, that doesn't work.

My idea involves Wx-78 rerouting his power from becoming overcharged and empowering 1 of the 3 side effects of being overcharged.

reroute all power to thermal core- Wx-78 increases his temperature beyond normal, as such his body can no longer support light or speed.

Becomes a mobile heat source for the team

Wx-78 deals a small amount of damage to enemies it comes into direct contact with

Gains immunity to rain

reroute all power to optical visors- Wx-78 increases his optical capabilities beyond normal, as such his body no longer supports cold immunity or speed.

Has a small radius of light

Projects two cones of light from his eyes that have great range

Wx-78 can lock-on his cones of light on an enemy, his head will have a complete 360 rotation (like Winona's spotlight). Keeping tracks of the enemy within his range in complete darkness.

Reroute all power to kinetic motor- Wx-78 increases his power processing capabilities beyond normal, as such his body no longer supports cold immunity or light.

Fighting, chopping, mining, hammering help build up Wx-78's overcharged and once overcharged, he cannot build it up until it is completely drained.

Overcharged's consumption rate decays far slower as long as Wx-78 stay in motion or busy.

Lightning no longer has negative effects on Wx-78

------------------------------------------------------------------

Each state can be achieved by consuming 4 different chips, the 4th turning him back to normal.

Wx-78 has a energy meter to communicate how much power Wx-78 has left.

Wx-78 can create batteries that can be attached to lightning rods and give complete overcharged status when consumed.

Wx-78 can craft gears with flint, doodas, and wires.

Hello fellow metal friend, i'm here to contribute too as old heck Wx main from 2013!

Even tho i switched a loong time ago for the eukaryotic cells organism called Wormwood, but who knows maybe i'll be back! (yes i made a terminator reference btw)

As rework ideas @QuartzBeam already beated me on the line. Just want to add, i wanted to make the modules strategic, like being able to use it only one of the many avaiable like Abby (but permanent), but 3 Module Slots it's fine.

My modules would have been more linked to the actual stats, for example: Brain module ( dunno the name, maybe a pun with RAM, since brain) you received the usual 250 sanity + all others niche and strong perks like being able to learn, remember and craft a lot of items that other characters can't, like Ancient Pseudoscience Station stuff. So your crafting table would increase a lot, being able to help your team in crafting a lot of items.

Health module would be 250 hp + other perks in combact since it's a health module, so i imagine WX able to spread his arms, giving you more range on melee, ecc...

That's my take, but from what i see, we all have so much beautiful takes and ideas for Wx and yes, Klei could have a blast of creativity with him....Which is why now Wx we'll not be changed so much and for achieving overcharge he needs to build a tesla thing structure and do a minigame for about 2 minutes.

I just want them to add some of the iron hulk mechanics from Hamlet, just dead Robot parts that can be found laying around and WX has to find a clever way to bring them to life before WX can upgrade with them.

(like once animated they visually come to life crawling to attach to them)

I vote we KEEP the “Can be Upgraded with Gears”

Gears are already a infinite resource (you can get them from Tumbleweeds if all other sources are dead) Klei can also just finally add the Clockwork Pawn into the game as a Mob that respawns overtime

However: I would ALSO make it so WX can reach inside their own chest pulling out gears taking away some of their own function to help speed up team builds requiring the use of gears.

This is pretty much all we have to go off of for WX78 which isn’t much…

Fire consumes New York library??? Oh wow uhm I never noticed that till now- Guess Wicker Lore was right in our face this whole time!

Don’t Starve Together however is a SEQUEL and while it is true WX used to be upgraded by gears.. maybe With the help of Winona’s arrival there (who worked for Wagstaff) she has helped Them come up with better ways of modification then just a bazillion gears.

it's already been mentioned at least several times but a more consistent way to get/maintain overcharge would be my number one wish. telelocator staves work, but with the amount of boss fights done in long term worlds, it can get expensive using them up, even with the ruins, increased treeguards, and nightmare fuel farming

also lower maximum stats to something thats more reasonable but still good. it's almost impossible to maintain 400 hp consistently and easily without digging into gear storages or using up all the meat and eggs on 10 or so perogis. i usually keep my health at 200 because of this but the half hp often makes me feel nervous. + 400 hp makes me feel like i can play recklessly, which only costs me more health

i like quartzbeam's and hornete's ideas the best and if i can talk about some other ideas i've had:

- modules that increase wx's efficiency at other tasks, like mining/chopping, damage increase, etc. likely wouldnt be good as characters that specialize in those tasks, but wx would more be there to fill in niches the team doesnt have/needs at the time. less of a need for swap characters

- increased electrical damage, like in the forge. i think wx could be able to be highly optimized for damage with this in combination with spicy jelly

- could have another downside where they're more susceptible to overheating because they're a machine. and in overcharge, they keep their immunity to the cold but overheat significantly faster

and since reworks come with shorts, here are my hopes and questions for wx's short:

- maybe some explanation on why wx was made in the first place, any why they have things like health and hunger when they could've been made to rely on like, sun for energy

(i have a theory that wx was made to be a simulation of a human. sort of like a test dummy. we'll see if i'm right)

- more insight on wagstaff? he's become a lot more intriguing since eye of the storm and webber rework short and im sure people want to know what he's up to since wx is arguably the closest character to him

- if there HAS to be narration. do it right. i enjoy the silent storytelling of most shorts and my biggest criticism of webber's short is how the narration is very distracting. it comes from just... some disembodied voice and explains a story that could've been told purely through visuals (it's not maxwell's voice i think. his voice in inevitable and the voice in webber's sound different). what i mean by "do it right" is make the narration a part of the story. like give wagstaff a voice. make him read journal entries about making wx, or notes or blueprints, maybe he's talking about his discoveries in the constant and why he needs to make this robot for it (also before you mention-- wortox's short also kind of didn't need narration but it's a bit less distracting because wortox is more of a silly guy then webber)

- wx's life pre constant is a really big mystery because i'm not even sure if they had much of one pre-constant. they dont even know what a cat is

- also maybe an insight on why they're so genocidal? like why do they hate organics and want to kill them all? have they actually killed anything before the constant?

- what happened that makes wx not like wagstaff? why does wx consider him untrustworthy? the other survivors don't know him and are pretty willing to help. i assume this would have to do with the pre-constant question i had before

- what does wagstaff think of wx? the only insight we ever get is in solo don't starve when wagstaff sees wx on the throne and can't believe his eyes. does he think of wx as just another project, only made to fulfill a purpose and be discarded once said purpose is over, or maybe (less likely) he got attached and didn't actually want to lose wx? i can imagine getting strong feelings for what seems like a long-term project, and something made so humanoid, but wagstaff is also preeeetty morally dubious so i dunno. something else??? please

- explanation for a bit on winona's conspiracy board: what does wickerbottom have to do with the wx blueprint? will we get some extra bits of lore on her as well?

- what is wx made of?? this is my own personal curiosity but i've been imagining they're made out of the same bits and pieces as the clockworks in the constant and i just have to know

- is wx really 4'10" or is the conspiracy board blueprint wrong. i think it would be really funny if they were super short but threatened to kill everyone

i think about wx a lot.

yeah any sort of modular upgrades where WX becomes like a skill tree were he can spec into one thing or another would be really fitting

any sane person should want this, we'll probably get it too because wolfgang's exercising to gain mightiness was a common suggestion before he was changed

I went ahead and named some of these emulating kleis punny names

  • Buns of Steel - (okay probably not but i had too) Raises max health by 50 ish
  • Sensetral Processing Unit (looks like a chip) - Raises max Sanity by 50.
  •  Motorboots (looks like well uh boots)- Consumes stored power to move at 1.50x speed.
  •  Digital Over Clock (looks like a clock)- Consumes stored power to deal extra electric damage every time WX deals or receives a melee attack.
  • High Beams (looks like goggles emits light from eyes) - Consumes stored power to activate night vision (scanner) or emit light (beacon).
  • Invisobelt (looks like a belt or does it?) - Consumes stored power to lose aggro and turn WX-78 invisible

I had originally thought about throwing in a relatively cheap module that generates power by consuming food and/or burnable items (like a firepit), but I figured a single power source would help keep things more simple.

That said, as someone who's played a lot of Sonic, I love the idea of trapping small, living animals (rabbits, birds, moleworms) inside WX-78 to use as a power source. The perfect power source for the Soulless Automaton.

I always LOVED the idea of making WX a very customizable character with their stats, as @QuartzBeam suggested earlier!
From being able to make simple modules to boost their hp/hunger/sanity, to more advanced modules such as conducting electricity and being able to reroute that stored energy into various other buffs to replace the... currently kinda underwhelming overcharge we have now.

And for the love of fridge, please don't make all upgrades cost a gear to craft.
EDIT: Scratch that I completely forgot the suggestion for WX to not eat gears anymore. :crushed:

i found this again i once made for a simmilar question, its how he can souport people whit collecting resources

image.thumb.png.2aa3c15306871a6c9cfb01bcd88eadb6.png
easy to understand?
1 build it
2 it collects grass or other resources
3 it puts it in its box
4 it gives the things to a nearby player

seems like good idea yes?

i've had this on my mind for awhile and i just got to put it down somewhere.

i feel like someone else had a very similar idea somewhere, but i can't really check so:

I was wondering if for the WX rework, they could give them a "power direction" panel or something. Say you have 2 wires and you choose to power your torso with it, maybe it could make you more tanky, but less speedy or something. Leg's more speed, less armor etc. (maybe a button located near the self inspection button in your inventory)

Maybe if you get water in your system, it floods and starts disabling your ability to power that area (It's countered by using an umbrella helm and not drowning but it's the best i could think of, besides probably having a sanity penalty every time you reroute power of like deleting 20 san or something)

obviously it's not fully thought out and i'm not even sure if i'm unknowingly stealing an idea  plus they need team perks yada yada.

could benefit from some ideas being thrown my way! :wilson_laugh:

This is my post from threads that dont deserve their own threads.

let me know what you think!

Install the unimplemented Hamlet beanie into WX's skull?

beanie? idk but i would love to see unimplemented things from hamlet

what i mean with inspector gadget is that would be fun if wx can change parts of his body to make them tools like light, axes, weapons, etc or like others suggeted about stats, heat, etc

wx has a lot of potential

atleast a woodie like refresh pls klei
