The Wolfgang Rework coming in December!

I posted this in the other thread when someone asked me Why I felt Wolfgang needed Nerfs- I feel the need to express that Sometimes Nerfs are a Requirement to give the character more POWER & Unique things they can do.. with that Said & With his Rework literally coming Soon..

let’s dive right into my opinions of Wolfgang.

since I’m a Wendy main…When Wendy got her rework she was given more control and utility over Abigail but that didn’t come without work- She actually has to do SOME Work exclusive to playing as Wendy to do these things-

1- Finding a Pipspook Graveyard, doing a Wendy exclusive Quest to help them find lost ghost stuffs in exchange for Ectoherbology Potions to improve Abigails performance.

2- Exclusive Wendy only Craftable Structure that has to be fueled with Flower Petals to further benefit Abigail/Wendy 

And 3- Temporary frames of vulnerability to being attacked while she literally takes a couple seconds “Ghost-Whispering” into her Sisters Flower to Sooth/Rile Up Summon/Desummon her ghostly sister.

The TL:DR- You actually had to DO SOMETHING besides just stuff food in your mouth to achieve Wendy’s fullest power.

And when it comes to Wolfgang “nerf” doesn’t necessarily mean “make weaker” it just means- “Make more interesting & more Unique”

For example maybe he could lift heavy objects without any movement speed penalty, Or maybe he could pick up and throw other players because he is a strongman after all, but with great power should come great work to achieve that said power- 

Maybe he needs to perform “Mighty Actions” to maintain his mighty Form (Aka carrying heavy items, using his signature Dumbell etc..) rather than just “Eating Foods to Become Superman with no hard Kryptonite”

As a WENDY MAIN who has to go through so much Exclusive just to Wendy gameplay- Wolfgang is utterly BORING.

I used to think WES was Boring but Klei actually made the Mime fun & I hope Wolfgang gets Something like being able to Merm-Punch boulders with his bare fists While in Mighty Form but to GET these new and cool Perks- He needs some proper NERFS and Balance first.

In fact if he had to do some exclusive to Wolfgang gameplay to be mighty I would even *Gasp* Advocate for having him be STRONGER.. but only of course if he actually had to do something unique that felt rewarding in obtaining that power.

Also some decent Downsides would be nice: I want to see his Myriad of phobias in actual gameplay in some form.

I think Wigfrid got a rotten Deal & Klei learned from that.. Wes Rework was AWESOME.

Also I’m pretty sure Wigfrids rework was rushed during a time of uncertainty (Covid delays, worries etc..) I still have hope they’ll go back to her and give her some touch ups someday but let’s get the entire cast reworked first- focus on small touch ups later.

Wolfgang is getting the rework BEFORE Wickerbottom.. who already saw a NERF when RWYS became a thing..

again people confuse a 'rework' with a 'refresh'. It's not the same damn thing. Wigfrid's was a refresh, it did just that, freshened up her kit a little, and that's because she really did not need a complete overhaul to her gameplay. Wes did.

As for Wolfgang, I honestly have no idea what they will do to him, not even a guess, so this'll be interesting to see

Unlikely, Wolfgang is quite a bland but strong character, He also has never been much of a team player unlike Wigfrid who can make helmets and spears.

I think they'll add some kind of quota to reach full mightiness besides eating, probably something to do with weights that can also buff teammates.

They'll defiantly make his downside much more interesting, maybe buffing all shadows against him, that would be fun.

that's exactly what I meant by "pulling a wig"

they won't touch his core but they will give him new team based powers

I’m 150% certain they will give him a fun (but manageable) downside. If they don’t.. I’ve lost all faith in Klei.

I say this because they were able to give WES actual useful team perks and some decent utility in his own rights, while at the exact same time making him a little more challenging by having enemies aggro on him more often and having lightning/meteors target him first.

Wes is actually useful now, and even though is proclaimed as the “Challenge Character” Challenge is entirely subjective to what the player plans to do with the character.

Sure maybe fighting bosses would be challenging as Wes- But for fast early- day resource gathering he can do that quicker then any character in the game with as little as a speedy balloon.

Wolfgang just moving faster and hitting harder is stupid.. I don’t even think muscle bound strongmen move faster- usually they move slower but hit harder. Why does he have a Wurt/Webber/Wormwood speed buff to begin with?

Instead what I would LIKE is more focus on his Strongman abilities such as for example.. being able to pick up and carry the boulders And statues etc without movement speed penalty, being able to still hit hard (maybe even harder) Being able to Merm Punch Boulders and trees to save tools use.

Heck who knows- Maybe his Strength could be used to pull Grass and Saplings straight out the ground without even needing to craft a shovel first.

But before he can get ANY OF THAT just eating food to gain all that power HAS to take a hard nerf.

I know just saying "Add X mod to the game" is generally considered poor practice, but I can't think of any better rework for him than what @Toros gave him.

No nerfs to his damage output, reasonable nerfs to health and sanity, an actually interesting downside that makes insanity a proper threat to him, and new strongman-themed utilities? Bloody hell, it's perfect, I'd say.

Maybe give Wolfgang a strength meter or something instead of basing his mightyness on only food. And the man obviously needs a barbell to work out with since it's his signature piece of equipment in the character picture. Or maybe he needs foods with a lot of protein to become mighty lol you can't bulk on that much muscle on a diet of honey and mushrooms alone you need real meals. But that would prob be too much like Warly.
Don't listen to me i have no idea what i'm talking about lol just speculating. I trust Klei will do these last refreshes justice

So far Characters who've gotten reworks haven't really needed new revamped downsides.

Wendy has lower damage

Willow is hurt by the cold, and low sanity

Wigfrid can't eat meat

and so on...

The "big three" have never really had potent downsides, that's where most people have problems with their balance, so it would make sense to give them something more meaningful

Becomes Thor the god of thunder while mighty and deals 10x more damage with hammers. Also deals lightning with them (has a cooldown) but can hammer WX with it to reliably overcharge him at the cost of health. Imagine lol.
Edit can obvs hammer stuff in 1 hit and i think you meant clap his hands not cheeks haha

Consuming 1.5-3x as much food as everyone else is a way bigger downside than taking slightly longer to fight Crawling Horrors & Terrorbeaks, having a negligible and rather unnoticeable penalty to insulating clothing that's only present during the Winter and if you're using clothes instead of a thermal stone, and not being able to eat like three things.

"Most people" (citation needed) have problem with their balance for the same reason you do: they saw someone else see someone else see someone else see someone else see someone else say that they're overpowered based on a huge misunderstanding of the characters and game overall. Wolfgang isn't a particularly good character and WX is pretty bad. Only Wickerbottom of "the big three" is anywhere close to as powerful as people like to pretend they all are.

This is what you want wolfgang to be but I'm sure the rest of the community doesn't think alike( that he should be nerfed) nor do they want him changed to such a serious degree. He is portrayed as being a 'strongman', an athlete so his muscles are much stronger which justifies his speed and strength boost lorewise, so how is any of this stupid? He is meant to be the pinnacle of physical prowess, speed & strength.

That would mean changing him completely, what you describe is turning him into a base decorator, wood & rocks farmer merm( which is pointless because there are multiple characters who do that already and do it better) The whole point is in making each character specialised in a certain niche, and wolfgang was and is specialised in dealing more damage and being combat oriented.

While I like reworks, if wolfgang gets one it shouldn't change his character formula but it should improve the already existing mechanics and the 3 forms with situational abilities like how woodie is. Or they could further develop his downside and give him a fear meter which changes the amount of damage he does based on the level of fear, he could get frightened and deal only 0.5x dmg or while the meter is empty he deals 2x dmg. That would take away his advantage of having full 2x damage for long fights as his fear meter will get filled up. And since he is scared of night and that should affect his fear meter he would be forced to fight at daytime for maximum damage in contrast to abi(without elixir).

And you really make wolfgang seem too overpowered as if his hunger meter or the normal & wimpy forms don't exist. I suggest you play on non-endless pubs for a while with him then you will learn more about him as a character. He is very situational and very combat oriented. Maybe for you its boring, but then again not every character needs their own crafting tab or followers to be cool.

As a Wendy main don't you agree she is overpowered, and much better in almost any situation than Wolfgang? He is good at speedruns and bosses I'll give him that but in terms of doing any other activity she is certainly better, and doesn't even need to lift a finger if abi murders everything, so you never feel her downside + there's petal buff. While Wolfgang needs constant hunger micromanagement to keep him in mighty form. I'm also a Wendy main btw

Wolfgang is just like communism, they both look good on paper but in practice they're very different. And both love potatoes:))

I've always been on the side of disliking Wolfgang in general, so I'm really hoping they can turn him into an actually interesting character with this rework. 

And seriously, he needs some nerfs.

When the main argument for people saying a character is bad is "yeah but Wolfgang"... You know he's got some problems.

That kind of argument is the whole reason I actually dislike Wolfgang as a character. When he is a reason to not play any other character because he can apparently do <blank> better, and if he can't, it's pointless to the game.

this literally only applies to combat characters which he is designed to be the STRONG MAN why make him weaker i see no point i would much rather make him more interesting and nerfing isn't the way to go about it
