It happened for me too, with all types of merm houses, even the old ones. The only use for the disguise mask right know is making you able to feed merms to help you.

 

Edit to correct: With a Merm King alive they won't attack non Wurt players.

it was always like this, merm aggro pattern is weird

He does 2 things. First, He buffs all merms on the shard, including you. While I'm not sure of the merms, Wurt goes upto a whopping 250 HP, 250 hunger, and 200 sanity.

additionally, you can apparently give him fish to trade for trinkets, tentecle spots, rot, and kelp

Do merms spawn from them only when the merm king is present?

I know the warriors ones do only with the king, not so sure about the other one.
