Arlesienne
I am just curious. Most people like to have more than one biome close to the camp intended to be long-lasting. What is yours? Subjectiveness allowed ;). Now, regarding the thread: DECIDIUS(Grammar? What is that?) FORESTS! They have so much stuff: Catcoons(for meat) Pig king village(Gold) and there is always a cave entrance by the pig village, and everytime i play there is a desert colliding it. Don't forget about gloomer! Asparagus
I don't want to share my secret but... Spoiler I like to base at the very edge of the savanah near the McTusk Trios... there's usually at least 1-2 spider dens there already and plenty of rabbits, plus a balance of saplings, trees, grass, rocks and tall birds... plus you can get the first pick for McTusk Hunting... O__O Explore for the first 10 days and gather reeds, silk, gears, so you can just place your tent, alch, crock pots, icebox and birdcage in one swoop... KoreanWaffles
The whole world is my camp. Because I'm a soloist. And I can visit other people's bases whenever I want. Because I am very lonely. SinisterSmiles
I personally like the desert for a few reasons... Hound mounds provide a constant source of monster meat. Tumbleweeds provide a never-ending stream of grass and twigs as well as trinkets and blueprints. Cactus provides a way to restore sanity throughout all seasons. And D-fly provides gems. Truly, truly, truly outrageous gems. CaptainChaotica
Desert is _awesome_. It's totally one of my fave biomes, for all the reasons you said. I've made secondary bases/I-HAVE-to-plonk-this-crockpot-down-_now_-or-I-will-starve bases (usually this happens while playing as Wigfrid) there, several times. I also tend to make a little basette in the deciduous forest, near Glommer's statue. It makes a good shady place to run away to in the summer--well, the parts of it that aren't on fire anyway. My _usual_, however, is a meadow that preferably borders a savannah full of rabbit holes AND a forest, if at all possible. _Always_ build your base near a good source of food that will stay renewable during the winter, BEFORE winter hits. I've found this out the hard way. I often put it RIGHT near a berry bush that's already there, so I have one on-hand that doesn't need fertilisation. I also put things that I know I'll be using a lot near a nice tree, so I can use it for shade/rain protection. (Then I have to keep reminding myself not to cut THAT one down. Heh.) I usually end up far away from rocks, but I make up for that by making sure I come back with LOTS of rocks/gold/flint/nitre any time I do a mining expedition. Short trip = casual gathering. Long trip = get enough while there to make it worth it. With a spring start I explore aggressively, constantly looking for clockworks and rock biomes--because I've got to find gears NOW, and also mine the mini-glaciers before they're all gone. If this fails, I then stay at my backup base in the woods for the summer, because everybody knows things can't catch on fire if you're not looking at them. I'm also a bit nomadic--I mean, I _have_ a home base, but I tend to wander around, even/especially in the harsher seasons. You kind of have to, if you want to find unpicked berry bushes/unwithered grass tufts. This means that, if nothing else...I'm usually not AT my base when giants show up, so my base isn't in danger from them! I can and do quite often just ditch them by.,.running home. : P So there's one reason not to "turtle"--Deerclops can't smash what he's nowhere near. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/68023-which-biome-is-your-favourite-for-the-main-intended-to-be-long-lasting-camp/#findComment-781335 Share on other sites

AnonymousKoala
Decidous is great to carry me through the first year, Swamp is always good(tentacle spikes, monster meat, fish, frog legs, silk, spider glands, reeds, musquito sacs, shrooms), and Desert is dope, but usually not my first choice. Usually I go with Decidous tbh. Arlesienne
7 hours ago, Mday said: Why isn't the cave/ruin an option? Because not every person has a machine powerful enough to support caves. This is the only reason. Well... this and the limit of options in a forum poll. * * * Your ideas are all very fine. Here is my addition. I love the swamp. Swamp is love, swamp is life, swamp is full-scale wars I live off or a gladiatorial arena with me selling tickets. I am usually a bit unlucky when it comes to deserts. They always spawn fairly far away and there is only so much you can prototype with just a science machine. You need to put that alchemy engine fairly soon and this is why I try to find the edge of a swamp close to some other biome with grass and trees. The swamp provides me with several things. - Food. Fish from ponds and merms, frog legs from merms (sometimes I am lucky and this one normal pond spawns on the edge), monster meat from spiders and tentacles (though I work hard not to allow anything and anyone to kill them). When I get the necessary resources, I can add meat (and pig's feet from Pickle It) as well as carrots from bunnymen and pigmen. I pair all this with a birdcage to get bacon and eggs for a good balance of satiation, healing and even some sanity as well as an apiary later on for honey (though I mostly use it for bandages and sanity restoration for spelunking). Playing a character with low hunger stats like Taronci or Wes, or even Willow, enables me to eat just when the hunger meter reaches the last level before starving in order not to lose food. - Resources. Reeds, silk, spider glands, tentacle spikes and spots - all this and more is obtainable in the swamp. I could technically use spiky trees and thorny bushes for twigs and an occasional log, but I rarely do. They are just for some real emergency since they cannot be replanted. I tend not to gather berrybushes, saplings and grass tufts if I can avoid it (or misclick SPACE with a shovel equipped...), instead relying on the adjacent biomes for that, but I plant all the pinecones and a lot of birchnuts (they last 20 days and can be used for cheap healing in the crockpot, so I aim at planting only the ones turning stale or spoilt) around my little camp for wood, a bit of shade and a good indicator for the map. Usually, some rocks spawn there or nearby too. At all times, I get a birdcage before my first winter. Spider dens allow me to craft clothes, fishing rods, bugnets, bird traps, beekeeper hats and tents or siestahuts, which are all highly useful if not obligatory later on. - Protection. Every mob in DST has more health. In the swamp, I can use it to my advantage. Strong or just irritating attackers can be lured there easily and the many perils ought to take care of them. Avoiding tentacles is fairly easy if you watch where you go, so I can use them as big AoE traps which cost me nothing. Add to this most swamps end up partially facing the ocean, from which only select mobs can spawn as of now (damn you, pengulls!). I like having this camp restrained in its size. You will not see me adding rows of crockpots or numerous tents at once. Remember I usually host, big, multi-sharded servers for sixteen people, so despite my best efforts, I cannot afford putting up a camp in a too-frequented place. Griefers usually target deciduous forests due to pigs and Glommer, meadows for stuff everyone needs and savannahs for meat and grass while fearing the swamp. It is my optimal location while still being able to reach players in need of help with relative ease. The area has to border with some biome where grass, twigs if it is possible and filler can spawn naturally. My favourite swamps looked this way: - a triangle of a swamp, a rockyland and a meadow with a small chess area all walled off from the rest of the island with thick, spider-infested forests creating a wide safety belt between my corner and beefalos with rabbits (Festum - backed up, no longer active) - a big savannah with rabbits close to the swamp and beefalos about four screens away, with a forest-circled bee meadow across the sea (From the Ashes) - a rhombus of the swamp, a deciduous grove with the pig king, moleworms, catcoons and Glommer, a savannah with rabbits and a meadow, with a rockyland two screens away and a coniferous forest close by (Giddy Up!) - a little deciduous grove largely overwhelmed by a coniferous forest cut through by a meadow with flowers and a savannah with rabbits, all linked to the swamp by its border (The Name of the Nome) - a wackily-shaped swamp with a coniferous forest on one side and a meadow with bees and rabbits on the other (A Whole New World) - a long and rather wacky swamp bordering on the edge of a big spider-infested coniferous forest with a double pig village in the meadows (several dozens of berrybushes there!), with a savannah inhabited by beefalos and rabbits close by, about three screens away, said savannah bordering on a desert with tumbleweeds, rocks, boulders and thorny bushes (Project Rosebud) As you can see, I combine a swamp with at least one other biome to provide resources not easily found there (like fruit and vegetables) to reduce walking around and the threat of other players razing the spawn entities to the ground when they fail to acknowledge the need of sustainable environments. I manually get myself a forest as well as flowers for my apiary, at least one screen away from the base to avoid killer bees and trigger the simplified honey production in winter. CaptainChaotica
I like to live NEARish to swamps, but not _in_ them...it's one of those things I like to have accessible but not _too_ close. Like with pigs (werepigs) and beefalo (mating season). I especially like living near swamps as Wigfrid, because (a) in spring they're one of her best sources of meat and (b) she's tough enough to handle the creepy-crawlies there (if you don't get stupid about it). I'm not sure, but it seems to me that just _being_ in the swamp lowers your character's sanity a bit over time--or maybe that's just me in real life. The creepy _sounds_...all the time... ...although I should specify here that every single thing I've said actually applies to SINGLEplayer! In multiplayer, I am never the one who chooses where to set up the base--it's usually already going for a few/several days by the time I get there. Since I'm talking the original version, not multiplayer, that means I don't have to worry about griefers, so meadows and deciduous forests get to stay pretty (unless they burn down during the summer.) The few times I _have_ set one up, other people made their own elsewhere--meaning mine still wasn't the "main" base. The main "griefer" I have to worry about with my meadow bases is those DAMN LUREPLANTS, which seem to be attracted to firepits or something. I swear, one time I had them growing right smack dab in the middle of my camp _three_ times in one run. Once, I had had a very bad day full of hounds and spiders, and when I came home to find my home _invaded_, I was like, "EFF you! This is MY house!" and turned my tentacle spike and Abigail lose on the bloody thing. It's amazing how ferociously territorial a little girl can get when she's in a bad mood. (And when her player is half a SECOND away from darkness and needs to put that log in the firepit right. Now.) Actually, I should say, I like to live _near_ savannah/meadow/forest, which one I live IN depends. Sometimes I live in a small patch of forest that borders the meadow rather than the other way around, as with my current run. I also don't go for huge bases--I tend to leave useful plants right where they are if they're close by, and only have maybe two crockpots. AGAIN, however, we're talking singleplayer. I guess with multi you kind of _have_ to start like, organised farming and mass food production. But I've seen people who DO have huge bases in regular Don't Starve; I've never quite gotten that. The few times I tried anything even close, I ended up with more "tamed" resources than I could harvest in a day and more food than I could eat before it went off (yes, even with an icebox). Now, with a whole BUNCH of people, a swamp base becomes more practical. But I still don't think I could stand the squishing and gurgling all day long. : P ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/68023-which-biome-is-your-favourite-for-the-main-intended-to-be-long-lasting-camp/#findComment-781595 Share on other sites
