What is this "Don't starve New Home"?

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this is fine to ask here. Sorry if it is not.

I found this in a news related to Tencent said they would publish this "Don't starve New Home", a multiplayer mobile version of Don't Starve by their own publisher, but I can't find any topic talking about this in the forum. Is this version real and truly developed by Klei?

It is real, and based on what ive seen and other's opinions, it looks terrible.

Also i think its only licensed by Klei but not made by them.

BTW: The game is not canon to the main game, the game is a premise on a scenario where Wilson remained in the Nightmare Throne instead of Charlie usurping it.

I guess Triumphant Wilson just wanted a copy of animal crossing. :wilson_laugh:

As @Dollmaker said it is only on Klei's license. DS New Home is developmend since year maybe a bit more than one year and sometimes they release closed beta tests for people from different countries. It looks like DST but with small RPG elements like quests, tutorials but more simplified. Mobile players were and maybe still are hyped for it and are waiting for release 'cause we don't have truly multiplayer on mobile but looking at this how devs are quickly giving us any informations about game, it makes waiting so boring. For now you can see almost everywhere questions about release date or when it will be release or asks for stop posting posts without real content.

It is absolutely real, sadly. No, it is developed by Shengqu Games and published by Tencent, Klei only sold them a licence. It will most likely be a typical mobile game with grind and microtransactions like Genshin Impact.

It is licensed by Klei but developed by someone else. The people developing it might have access to some assets from the original games, but other than that.......... it has nothing to do with Don't Starve in practical terms.

Those fellas couldn't come up with anything original so they just copy pasted the staves from Forge and put them in there. The whole thing is generally treated as Klei getting some money and then staying away from whatever happens as far away as possible. And most forumers treat it like that as well.

Don't Starve: Newhome has some unique stuff like creating your own character, having the regular cast as NPCs, and several gameplay modes (roguelike, some jester balloon game, and the forge), a built-in form of geometric placement, and a "home" which is a hub where you're allowed to build with various decor. The game is completely mobile (though the developers have encouraged use of emulators if you want to play it on PC) so it has aspects of it that are EXTREMELY jarring to forum users such as gacha, quests, log-in bonuses for in-game currency, leveling systems+perks from XP, microtransactions, and other things that would not be found in a regular Don't Starve game. It's a spin-off of the original series so it's definitely not for everyone that likes the Don't Starve franchise, but it's still a spin-off so you can safely ignore it if it is not your cup of tea. Like others have mentioned, it's still good that this game exists since we got to see never before seen assets for Don't Starve Together and also it will help introduce people to Don't Starve as a whole. The release date for the game was planned to be this year from old tweets, but it doesn't look like that's the case especially with the launch of Tencent's newest "Level Infinite" that launched yesterday that features a page with the game with release date: to be determined.

There have been several betas for the game, with the more recent ones having gameplay (earlier betas had a Non-disclosure Agreement) that focus on the start and the story modes. You can look up gameplay of it on YouTube yourself where you'll see the game is definitely a spin-off since it's a different art style (they said it's more visible on mobile devices) and has much more gameplay that revolve around tutorials. The story mode seems to have lots of quests that introduce the player to surviving and fighting bosses. Overall, my point is that the game is very, VERY different from DS+DST and is going to have a different audience.

The game is really garbage imo.

I was able to play a few beta's, and hey, the one good thing i'll say about it is a lot of the concepts are actually fairly neat. There's this forge-esque game mode with chess pieces and different versions of the bishops, and even pawns and kings as mobs/bosses. The king is like this giant animatronic bear haha, and the weapons are fairly neat, I like the art for quite a few of them.

But other than that? Hooo boy! It's got all the wonderful garbage a mobile game could offer, a daily limit for rewards when playing game modes, lots and lots of gacha, the battle royale-esque game mode just has bots instead of real people, LOL. And you know how Klei was very adamant on having no quests/achievements when developing DS/T? I got to experience first-hand some of these quests and man are they terrible. One of the quests I was teleported to a seperate world and had to take care of a smallbird on this tiny little island. There was no action, no gameplay, besides the one adult tallbird that I had to kill to protect myself. Just "afk" for 3 days making sure the egg was close or far enough from the firepit and win. Yaaaaaaaay! The story mode gets really boring to me. It's just "Do these things!" kind of quests for all the chapters, and I got too bored to finish the 3rd Chapter with goose people because of that.

I kinda like the dungeon-crawler mode newhome has though, the 3D walls look pretty neat and you get this special little interaction where you still have to suffer survival elements like hunger, temperature and the such, while playing a dungeon-crawler mode akin to EtG/Nuclear Throne/Isaac at the same time.

Not much else I can say that I like about the game though.

It's the lovechild of Klei and Tencent's long relationship and happy marriage.
...Google's honestly a better source if you want info on that series of events. Lot of backstory that just isn't worth discussing here.

The game itself (at least the cinematic we've gotten) seems to fill the time between Wilson getting stuck on the Throne and Charlie giving him a vibe check.
As for being official/canon or not...
Published by Tencent, so yes, technically.

Of course, canon's always up to interpretation in cases of conflict, so...yea.

From my understanding its a parallel universe where Wilson remained at the nightmare throne instead of Charlie usurping it.

So... not canon.

I've seen that idea mentioned by people on the forums, but never by Klei or Tencent. Think it was just one of our ideas that caught on, haha.

new home is the example of what happens when you release a game with the only goal of making money

ofc klei released ds for making money but is clearly not the main goal when you see how cruel was, making a niche game doesnt make you famous. Meanwhile new home is how would look DST if klei make it casual as hell with that annoying and dumb started tutorial or how some mechanics work

it has good things for sure, but it has nothing to do with ds neither in lore

As NewHomes own description reads-

A7E86618-B7BA-4963-9C40-ED85FE35D1F9.thumb.jpeg.0f7b93b4c8c87d2df53d91ccac771fe1.jpeg

But this information is actually false- New Home ISN’T Klei’s newest installment, it’s someone else’s game Klei simply just approved.

Until the story plot of NewHome becomes canon to the franchise it should be treated as a Spin-Off from another company that isn’t “Klei’s newest installment.”

Personal: I don’t like the graphics of NewHome, it’s like when Teen Titans went to Teen Titans Go!- I stopped watching.

Ben 10/Ben 10 Alien Force > Todays generation of Ben 10

The TL:DR- Shortcuts we’re taken in making the art look pretty and the shows and DS NewHome- Looks worse now because of it.

But hey who knows- Maybe Klei has plans to actually “Do” something with NewHome someday, Maybe they already have…

Only Klei & the folks working on NewHome know the answer to that.

...maybe I'm missing something, but I'm still not seeing the part about a parallel non-canon universe or Wilson staying on the Throne in a time that would conflict with DST.

I'd just be interested to know where people got that if it did come from somewhere beyond speculation. I mean, I love speculation, but people keep mentioning this like it's been verified somewhere...and I've been gone a while.

You misread it; it says “the newest installment of klei’s hit gaming series”. Never is it mentioned that newhome is klei’s game, just that it’s the newest installment in a franchise created by klei.

Together takes place after Wilson was dethroned. Nothing in New Home is present in Together.
