It seems that Don't Starve Together is getting a story of itself now, with Charlie taking reign over the shadow throne, changing and adding to the world. So, a story needs an end, does it not? I think that maybe this will be an end to the overall don't starve story line, with the characters and the new creations being rid of from the shadow world, and the shadow world returning to an empty world.

Everything created in the don't starve universe will be gone, and the characters will return home. It would be a cool cutscene to see the characters coming back to their homes and lives, like wes appearing back in france and beginning his mime career again.

And maybe just for satisfaction (this isn't going to happen i know but it would be pretty cool) Wilson comes back to his house, but he is only depressed because after meeting people and making friends, he has to return to a life of a failed scientist. NOW what if he gets a knock on his door, and opens it to see CHESTER. i would love that but it probably wouldn't happen.

So do you think the end to the storyline will be in DST? Do you think Shipwrecked has to do with anything? And what would you like to see in an ending?

Oooooohhhhhh buddy... Clear the next hour because I'm gonna theorize to my little nerd hearts content...

I agree. The characters will be probably go home eventually but... I reckon they will be altered. My theory is that the version of themselves that heads home will probably be the Triumphant version. Why? The only way to escape is to conquer the shadows... to become... triumphant. This is why I think DST Adventure Mode will come to fruition. With all the current lore of the story, the gang is planning to find Charlie (Ex: End of Cyclum). There will be a huge battle against the shadows and maybe Maxwell will be able to convince Charlie to help them, because he and Wilson both know the horrors they provide. Then. They'll be free. And as a cherry on top, Wilson will be sitting alone in his home, reminiscing over the horrors (and joyous occasions) he experienced. Then (like you said) he will hear a knock at his door... and all of his friends will be there. Plus, a very happy Maxwell with a recovered Charlie.

At least... That's how I'd end it...

For all we know there could be a meteor strike and all the survivors will die.

I'm on the fringe if whether or not Don't Starve needs an ending like that or not... a lot of possibilities could make the ending...

As you said, they all go back to their regular lives, part of them missing the trill and adventure... and each other... their lives will never be the same... but to get there, what would happen to the world where it all happened?

  1. They could come back to their world like nothing ever happened... but that would be too boring.
  2. They would appear to be back to their own world, but then we realize that they're still stuck being THEIR play things... not knowing that they're still in The World... they go about their normal routines before they were sucked into THEIR game... but it seems they've put up a new stage for their performance...
  3. They never get to leave for reasons:
    1. There must always be someone at the throne...
    2. THEY must always be entertained...
    3. THEIR world relies on their souls... their presence... their lives...
    4. Charlie is forever bound to THEM... as the previous Puppet master failed THEM, THEY must now bring matters in their own hands... Charlie, both Shadow and human... the catalyst... she mediates between them... giving her free reign, but at the cost of her sanity, soul, and heart...
    5. (so much more... so little time *sees someone already posted while I'm writing this @Mikeadatrix XD *continues writing)
  4. ... I'm going to bed gnight O__O

Now that you mention it... DS set in the big city... but instead of people, pigmen, merms, rocklobsters, and bunnymen, as apple vendors, milk men, barbers, bus drivers, odd jobs and more... (or just wearing clothes that denote their occupation) then the Pig King in a suit as the mayor with a Bunnywoman (or merm) secretary...

Gameplay: IDK O__O

(OK, seriously I should be asleep, but the theories just piled on and then they left...gnight)

there is soo many cartoons about animals living like humans or tons of movies about animals secret lifes XD lol ... . .    . ı know what it feels like ),;      (flashbacks)

I don't feel like it needs an end, but I guess I wouldn't really be against it.

Though something that might be worth mentioning is how characters die and respawn, or how Maxwell died after coming off to throne yet exists as a playable character in the world.

What I mean to say, is it very well might be "Them" that is keeping them "alive". So if the characters were to escape the very thing keeping them alive (be it an eternal loop), they could potentially die.

Of course, I have no idea how it all actually works, but that's just an intriguing thought.

I feel it could have an ending similar to the adventure mode one. The cycle continues, you can still play the game itself. Someone probably has to stay on the throne - that's what hit us as a cruel ending when we first finished it, right?

Maybe we'll get different mods, each one with specific difficulty and unique features in the world, depending on whoever is on the throne at that moment.

Maybe they will just get used to live there, maybe they will save Charlie, maybe the two worlds get 'merged', maybe WX will sacrifice itself. Probably something we haven't thought about will blow our minds in the end.

What I would find fascinating is an 'ending' that repeats the cycle on the bigger scale. Maybe they save Charlie and the shadow world will start falling apart. They all wake up back on earth and the shadow world will reset. Then past versions of Maxwell and Charlie get in there and start it all over. Time 'works differently' there, after all, and I love time-travel fiction.

They could also simply get out and throw away the Codex Umbra, only to be found years later by Shipwrecked-featured characters.

Or, the story ends with a meta, deep plottwist, like that we are shadow creatures, or that we are just chess pieces of some even higher beings - our players. Something like this would hit the same way as when I found that adventure mode doesn't really end anything (the cycle continues) and that there is something far worse that controls the game.

Until then, for science!

What if they can only send 1 person back? So after much drama and deliberation, they decide to try to send Charlie back. They succeed, and together use their combined strength to destroy the throne, ending insanity and shadow creatures, but still stuck in the DST world.

What if everyone goes back home and they feel like their lives have no sense outside the "island"?

Hope I'm not the only one here who saw the entire series of LOST.

And then they go to the middle of the real-life wilderness until everyone dies of malaria or cholera.

10/10

You meet Charlie, defeat her, the throne is empty.. they require a new host. Just as Wilson was about to accept his role as the pervious holder, the original holder,  Maxwell, rushed back to the chair. Maxwell sent his new friends back to the original world they started in and the game continues as normal, but more brighter and fulfilling.

They never get out.

What? A heartless shrew? I'm a writer, my good sir, narrative fuel is what I feed off!

I actually wrote a Christmas gift for my friends last night. It was a bittersweet thing. The trick is with taking a victim away from the Throne and exchanging it with a willing sacrifice. THEY have no souls or minds; a move like that literally tears the fabric of the plane apart.

2q1XCN5.gifThe extinct dinosaur ending~!

I'm going to wait until @Kevinstates anything else on the matter. There's still stuff that needs to be looked into in the canon timeline.

I do suspect they went in a sensible direction: the wilderness is so random leaving room for headcanons is better.

I think a main theme of the story has been chess. I mean, the chess robots and all, and the characters being pawns. The suspicious marble being turned into chess peices, and there being a king and queen (maxwell and charlie). You always have to figure out how you can get around the tricks being played on you by using your wits. It's not like the world in don't starve holds your hand. Whoever is in the throne is playing chess against you.
