Wanda proposal

Recommended Posts

I absolutely love Wanda, but I do have one little gripe with her: Klei introduced this elaborate farming and cooking system, with dozens and dozens of recipes, and Wanda is almost compelled to ignore pretty much all of that. Even sanity food is not really necessary (except maybe if you want to use the enlightened crown to its full potential), since shadow creatures melt before her eyes anyway, even in the middle of a boss fight. So she just spams meaty stews all her life. As Wanda I never actually go to gather any ingredients, my fridge always overflows with meat of all kinds naturally. Even a bird cage is completely optional, something that I considered essential with almost all other characters. I miss the variety of being forced to cook different dishes.

Here is a proposal: keep the ageless watch as it is, with the cooldown and all, but make it store up health recovery potential by being fed healing foods. Let's say the watch can keep a maximum of 10 uses worth of charge. Have a little indicator next to the watch to show how much it has currently stored up, or just have a few different inspect quotes to give the player a rough indication. If you use the watch when it has no charge stored up, it heals you for much less, let's say as much as you will age while the watch is on cooldown. This is a bit similar to how you can use Wanda's weapon when it is empty, but it is much less efficient then. The purpose is to remind Wanda players that pierogi, honey ham, fish sticks, beefy greens, dragon fruit pies, hell -- even fried potatoes, and all that other fun stuff still exist.

What do people think?

for one hand, her playstyle is unique for other hand i stop playing her because of this since i need to be forced to farm stuff, i run out of ideas for building because she doesnt need anything so i like your idea

and you can use taffy since recovers a good amount of hunger (i think is close to a meatball with her bonus) and gives enough sanity to keep using the CC crown

that's the Wanda's chip to not to be able to heal with food, why you would fix smth that isn't broken and makes that character interesting to play?

Hmm, maybe I was not clear enough: she would still not be able to heal with food alone. Her ageless watch would still have a cooldown, and it would still be her only healing option. But the watch itself would have to be charged with healing foods in order to function properly. Why would that make her less interesting to play? It would add another dimension to her, namely the whole food system, which she can (and should, if playing optimally) currently completely ignore.

To each their own but I also see it as a disservice to the character to make her so detached from so many core game mechanics.

after the initial cost of a few AWs, ‘hp’ meter is taken care of forever, outside of primarily AF and other boss battles sanity meter doesn’t matter either because she wants to be insane because AC makes her immune to crawling horrors anyway.

and hunger is simply taken care of by any kind of meat found along the way. And if that’s not enough 3 honey and a twig gets her 40 hunger and 15 sanity.

Wormwood doesn’t really care about crockpot meals either but that facet of the game is replaced by the continuous hunt for the many kinds of fertilisers and non food healing items. And dispatching of nightmares when he does go insane isn’t free and effortless like with AC.

On the flipside Wanda has so many bells and whistles and perks that the player can choose to ignore some and craft their own playstyle that way. Like limiting urself to a certain amount of AWs etc. Cuz I don’t think it’s very realistic to expect any kind of changes to Wanda at this point.

AWs requiring some semblance of maintenance after initial cost would’ve been very interesting though.

If you want to benefit from food stats-and-all, play another character, is that simple. Making Moon Portal and switching is so easy KLei forums always pop with "nerf Spawn Portal/Idol needs to be more costly/Pls KLei address the pick-and-swap character problem" topics. Not all characters need to be equal in attributes, mechanical power, play style etc, variation is needed, and is Wanda's thing she doesn't benefit from "normal character" food stats, her con. KLei did a fine job with her.

There's no need to remind Wanda players of regular character food mechanics. Not at all. In the first place Wanda is not a character newbies/noobs/casuals should address before a default Wilson when starting at DST if they don't want to have a skewed view of basic DST mechanics. Why take Wanda's uniqueness for the sake of same old DST mechanics across the board? Once more: if wanting to dwell into regular food habits & stats, play another character. No need for more convolutedness just for the sake of it.

I don't see anything wrong with different characters having amount of interactions with core mechanics; in fact it differentiates them from each other when the likes of Winona, Woodie, Willow etc take good advantage of a varied diet, Warly practically needs varied crock pot recipes while on the opposite end Wurt is restricted to vegetarian recipes, Wigfrid to Carnivorous, and Wanda & Wormwood aren't affected by health recipes. It would unnecessarily complicate her absolute no healing gameplay with health recipes did affect her; she already takes advantage of farm crops and a variety of luxurious crock pot dishes, especially in a team environment. Mask of Terror or beefalos come to mind as an example where she has a good use for healing foods. Just because she deals with shadow creatures easily doesn't diminish the use of sanity recipes either, she still takes full sanity advantage of them and it prevents uninvited guests like Wavey jones and lesser inconveniences like grabby hands.

The point is, Wanda is balanced well when it comes to her limited healing options and I don't see any need to incentivise her to eat healing-rich foods, especially when the said healing foods may be sorely needed by her teammates.

Wormwood doesn't eat healing food either. Warly prefers not to. Wurt doesn't eat meat, and Wigfrid only eats meat.

If you only want to spam one dish that isn't even the best and spoils pretty quickly you can, but to ask the game itself be changed just because you refuse to change how you play and want to be forced to change is a bit silly.

Well, sure, it's certainly not as realistic as a watch-whip that is fed with nightmare fuel, or a shield that is fed with food...

You admit you know about that shield and know there's an answer to your "problem" but still ask for this weird change? Yes, a magic watch being powered by magic and a hat with a mouth being fed makes sense. Shoving food into a watch that doesn't even have somewhere to put it doesn't make sense.

Honestly, I think it's fine that she's encouraged to ignore time-consuming aspects of the game; it fits her personality to want to rush through things and just use what's efficient.

That said, I like the general concept of upgrading/tinkering further with her watches, for the same reason; it fits her character. She made them, she's used to working with clockwork, and she carries around the tools.
She doesn't really need an update...but something of that nature could be cool.
