DST Future

Recommended Posts

I know.. This subject has been brought here many many time, but I still want to put it back on the table.
I've been playing to DST with my friends for years then stop, and went back on this beauty with my gf recently,

And I'm still talking to my girlfriend about how DS Shipwrecked was a wonder, absolute magnificent game, and keep dreaming about bringing her on those Islands.
We love the sea contents you brought on DST Klei, but it will never fill totally the expectation of having a SHIPWRECKED Experience.

So I leave this topic here, like a bottle in the sea. Please do a DON'T STARVE TOGETHER SHIPWRECKED. PLEASE, I BEG YOU :D

Thanks for all the content you gave us and I wil continue to be a fan of your work, forever.

Don't Starve Together is the flagship Klei game, it makes no sense to dilute it's playerbase with Shipwrecked together. Best hope for more shipwrecked inspired content in the oceans of DST, but not much more. You can have the shipwrecked experience using mods. Tropical Experience and Island Adventures both provide this.

What Joe has said previously in a steam forum om this topic:

DST is a different game. We had to rebuild the game from the ground up in order to make it multiplayer. DS at the time we started DST was also getting additional content, and DLC, so at that point they diverged significantly enough there was no going back.

To get DS and DST to the same exact point would take a massive amount of time working on only that while NOT making new content. DS wasn't designed for multiplayer and A LOT would need to be changed... hence, DST.

This topic gets brought up so much, its practically beating a dead horse lol.

Having content inspired by Hamlet and SW is perfectly fine, like the Waterlogged biome. But I hope they never do a 1-to-1 port of the DLCs. They have brought so much original and unique content these past two years, that spending all their time to just port and then rebalance 2 sp DLCs would waste that opportunity. If anything, revamping already existing content is a much better use of their time than porting (just look at the Reap What You Sow update). If they did biome reworks like they did with the Blue Mushroom biome, that would be better than a port too.

They have so much more content in store for the game too. We have 4 more reworks after Wolfgang, more updates to add content to the ocean (at least as per last year's roadmap, unless they are done with that), possibly more DLC characters, an update that will definetely be about opening the Sealed Gateway in the Ancient Archive biome and possibly another separate update about the Ancient Gateway being over run by nightmare Fuel (which was hinted at in I believe the 2019 Roadmap), a rian machine (I haven't forgotten), and more QoL updates.

Doing a port instead of all of this in honestly what I say would be a waste of resources, and I hope they address this common question in the next Roadmap.

Well there is no Shipwrecked season and it's full of bug unfortunately, would be lovely if few devs from klei would help to make it stable and more complete. Like that, hardcore fan of DS like you wouln't be offended as much when we just want to share this amazing experience with friends.

I also hope they will.

they won't.

As long people discover the beauty of Shipwrecked, I'm afraid more people will continue to share the dream of a DST Shipwrecked :P

Modders create mods for free in their free time, while devs get paid for their work because it's a normal job for them like any other job. If you had a friend who was a dentist, would you ask them to fix your teeth for free? If you really want SW content in DST, and are not satisfied with the existing mods, then pay someone to make a better mod.

if we thing about what klei's inventive can create seen in things like FW (one of the best designs for a boss fight in the history of videogames in terms of using the ingame mechanics) , waterlogged biome, lunar grotto, celestial champion (3x1 boss) and the crown which imo is very cool mechanically speaking , carrat races, deeper characters like wendy, woormwood and wanda, RWYS (suck it, stardew valley), beefalos being very useful and fun instead of a fancy and annoying way of changing the gameplay or klaus, just for meantioned my favourite updates, is nearly insulting since we all would miss all of these content

i get that would be so cool to play the dlcs in multiplayer, i would rebuy them to play in dst, but is a bussiness and, if we think about ourselfs, is better to let them grind that canadian heads instead of waste that potential recycling stuff that dont even "work" in a balanced way (one thing is having little exploits or mechanics that can be abuse as an optional help and other totally broken mechanics like hamlet (i love hamlet fav dlc btw)) which would need even more work added to rewriting the entire code into a new engine and make it work with more players. And, as i said, i would be one of the players begging for it if wasnt because of the dst uptades with original, deeper, polished and funnier content so that time receiving single player content will feel like a wasted opportunity

edit: just see how they can change by adding the biome of this mob as refresh of some useless cave biome

DS Shipwrecked was amazing. DS Hamlet was also amazing, in its own way. Being able to connect them was also amazing, mainly for the creative possibilities that this opened up. I am not convinced that any of these games would work well in multiplayer if just ported one-to-one, and I am just grateful for having those singleplayer games. I am also grateful to Klei for continuing to develop the water content in DST, but I see no reason for them to just copy the single player game.

The Devs have said they know it’s something a lot of people want to see done, but it’s not something that can be so easily done, and to realistically do it, could take like 5 years.. they say if it was something they could’ve done easily- They would have already done it.

Until they straight up say no it’s never going to happen, no one really knows what Klei’s plans are.. but to be honest: I love it when they surprise us.

And- there was a post they made sometime back ago about players (& devs alike) feeling fatigue from the way they structure their Roadmap updates

I have absolutely no idea what that can mean… since their update schedule has been- Character Rework, New DLC Character, Content Update, QoL, Events.

I mean- unless they have something HUGE planned: there’s not much more they can add to their Roadmap schedule.

Although: I do recall a thread about the possibility of a DST Battle Pass, I have no idea what happened to that thread- But devs did comment in it.. so there’s that.

I guess the TL:DR- no one really knows what the future of DST is, but we should get atleast a rough idea overview of what’s coming in 2022 when JoeW does his thing and posts the new Roadmap in Janurary-February.

Whose concept is this? It is stunning!

is from stuff that klei gave to tencent in case they wanted to use something for new home in addition to other stuff like the recently added grassgators

Looking at this just makes me sad at what all is not in the game yet.

But I don’t think anyone wants back Water Shoes- I personally would love to have the “look” of Shipwrecked boats but Mechanics and deeper gameplay of DSTs cookie.

I would also love for DSTs ocean to feel as alive and full of content as Shipwrecked, maybe even the land biomes getting an update too.. Hamlet/SW felt teaming with wildlife and a believe-able world- DST just seems to still be playing “catch up” in my opinion.

What I mean by that is enemies got new attack patterns in Hamlet, the world felt more dangerous..

Because what you picked, plucked, chopped or opened always had the chance to spawn some wildlife..

It just felt overall like an advancement in the DS Franchise.

I even went out of my way to get a new Xbox console to experience whatever Klei has planned for Next Gen gaming (well I won’t lie, A next gen DS & Multiplayer Batman Arkham)

Point is.. isn’t it about time we got updates for the more powerful hardware?

Even if I need to Re-Buy DST “Expanded & Enhanced Edition” for Series X/S as long as all the skins I’ve already purchased Carry’s over- I’m okay with that.

I was hoping when Klei made the Tencent announcement they would shed details on this, or when they released last years roadmap, but so far nothing has been said.

Maybe they’ll say something about it in the 2022 roadmap or one of the devs will chime into this thread and just leave the trademark “soon” image.

Either way I long for a bigger better Dont Starve that takes full advantage of what the newer Xbox & PlayStation consoles are fully capable of.

Shipwrecked/ Hamlet Together would need a ton of changes to better suit Multiplayer play: Changes that can take several years of development.. Yet people still keep asking for it as if it was something Klei could scratch together in less then a week.

I don’t want that- what I want and likely may never get: is a true next gen version of Dont Starve that isn’t held back by older hardware.

isn't this mod dead? :v

It still gets bugfixes from the community that get added into the main mod, so it's still very much playable despite the main devs having ceased development.

One of the fans of the mod is currently working on adding in the volcano.

so the bugfix version will be it's own thing or it will be an undate for the current mod?

...from a quick Google, it seems like at least one of the multiplayer mods made back in the years when it was being insisted that multiplayer would never exist are still functional; on the Workshop now, even. I know there was another multiplayer mod from those times that didn't seem to show in the results, but can't remember the name of that one old modder with the dragon icon...something with a lowercase y?

But yea, I mean, the option is still there, it just takes some dedication with setting up the controls.
