In-Game Headcanons?

Recommended Posts

What kind of headcanons do you guys have about the game and/or its lore?

To start, one of my headcanons is that the thermal stone is repaired by the sewing kit only because the survivors wrap the thing together into a bow instead of actually sewing it. Secondly, that WX-78's favorite food is Butter Muffin solely because they enjoy that it involves the death of a butterfly. And Third; Willow slaps Wilson in the back of the head every time he tells a bad joke.

Feel free to add to this whenever you feel like.

Lucy is actually a normal ass axe, but all of the other survivors play along because they're scared of what Woodie will do to them if they try to tell him the truth.

Also the fact that the Gesalts and Nightmare Creatures came from the same bug race but were divided after a schism on who they should devote themselves to.

I have a few head cannons

The Crab king was driven insane by a crown of gems.

Gems were bestowed by the moon and it feeds itself by siphoning sanity from those that wield them. Similar to the maw but it feeds on your consciousness.

When there were no worthwhile consciousnesses to drain it fell asleep.

Gestalts are the fragment consciousnesses of the ancients.

The moon never intended to wipe them out and keep them around as live stock and so it tricked them into worshiping it.

The darkness created the same gems but instead fed on their bodies. The darkness consumes all and leaves no survivors.

The being hidden within Charlie is not the queen but the being behind the fall of the ancients; the eye.

The eye created many creatures in its image as it tried to control Charlie by mistake as it could not control its powers; tall birds, deerclops, chester, etc.

The place Charlie is trying to access is the tomb of the queen to regain its full power, which she sealed within herself.

Each side chose its own "king" for its chess board, the sacrificial piece. The darkness chose Maxwell, but later turned to Wilson when he took over. The moon chose Wagstaff.

During dawn and night the moon is draining your sanity, as that is when it is strongest. Although its asleep, it is constantly draining sanity so that it can wake itself up when it has consumed enough. That is why pigs remain stupid, but they give the moon very little substance.

Moon shards are unpowered gems.

Wormwood is a spy sent by the moon, it watches them through his gem.

The darkness within Charlie has tricked her into thinking it wants to send them home, but it wants to open the portal to consume more realities.

The darkness chose the survivors as its harbingers of doom; they are its pawns. They were chosen due to their strong wills, caused by trauma, as it can resist the moons draining effects.

The darkness tries to kill them during the night so as to not feed the moon and when at low sanity so the moon cannot try and subdue them (the moon is constantly extending its influence even when asleep).

All of the survivors perks were given to them by the dark being that entered the portal.

Charlie had the survivors kill the fuelweaver as to take full control of the remaining shadow monsters and gain the tragic torch. The tragic torch could only be lit by the power of the moon so it had the survivors awaken it.

The dark being within charlie wants to open the tomb of the queen, regain its powers, destroy the moon, and consume the constant.

These are just headcannons I make up on my free time, until Klei reveals the actual story. Usually every arc my headcannos are completely destroyed and I have to make new ones, lol.

Edit: The gems obtained by the survivors are remnants left by the moon. The statues that hold basically just shadow fuel in their hands where once the fake gems created by theshadow.

WX-78's first thing they did when they came from the Florid Postern was to attempt to kill the other survivors

Maxwell gets mad at Willow when she spoils the Lavae

The reason Maxwell has a bluish skin tone is because the Throne drained all his blood and changed it for Fuel

Woby was mutated from Nightmare Fuel exposure but nowhere near as Ancient Guardian

WX hangs out with Wormwood because they want to take his chest gem but Wormwood is oblivious of this and thinks WX wants to be friends

Nightmare Fuel is formed by condensing survivors' emotions into a physical substance. Scared, stressed-out survivors (middling to low sanity) leave invisible clouds of nightmare fuel vapour in their wake, and there's a certain point where they're emitting enough of it for the shadows to wrap it around themselves and make physical bodies with which to attack them. Evil Flowers suck out survivors' pleasant emotions and metabolise them into nightmare fuel, which can be harvested from the petals if you pick the flower.

Shadow monsters always appear to be two-dimensional projections. They don't move like paper cutouts, but they always appear flat like a paper cutout; they move like 3D forms being projected onto a flat surface, similar to an actual normal shadow, only in midair instead of on a wall or a screen or the ground or whatever.

There's a connection between the current time in the Constant and the current time on Earth rather than them being totally disconnected and non-linear. This is why it's possible to determine what day Wormwood and Wurt's birthdays are in the Earth calendar even though they've never been to Earth. But it's not rigidly synchronised; Maxwell once tried to take a survivor from the future as an experiment when he was on the throne, and that was Walani, who's from the 1960s.

If the survivors ever get out of the Constant they'll all be spat out together at the current Earth-equivalent date, no matter what year they came from, so the ones taken several years earlier will be younger than they logically should be. Depending on what year it ends up being when they return, this might only affect the kids or it might be noticeable on the adults as well; Wendy will still be a kid when she should be a teenager or an adult, and Wigfrid reappearing after dropping off the face of the earth for 10-15 years or more, still as youthful as the last time anybody saw her, might also cause some comment.

The reason Wilson ended up in the same world as Maxwell in Cyclum, kicking off all the stuff that put the Together in Don't Starve Together, is because Wilson and Maxwell effectively both got kicked out of the same Adventure Mode run. Just like what happens in-game, Maxwell got sent back to Wilson's Survival Mode world when Wilson unlocked the Nightmare Lock. However, if you somehow die in the Checkmate: Epilogue throne room, you also get sent back to the Survival Mode world you were in before, which is what happened to Wilson after Charlie disconnected him from the Nightmare Throne and shadow-electrocuted the living daylights out of him.

There's one level of caves in DST and two levels of caves in DS because the floor of the regular caves collapsed during Charlie's first attempts to use her shadow powers, dumping all kinds of cave stuff into the depths where the ruins are. She used some of the rubble to make staircases in the sinkholes; possibly she wants the survivors to spelunk more than Maxwell, who would prefer that everything underground be forgotten. (The collapse and Charlie's cleanup efforts might also be why the caves were completely inaccessible for like the first half of the DST beta.)

Charlie is more powerful than Maxwell, Newhome!Wilson, or any shadowed survivor who might hypothetically end up on the throne in the future or an alternate timeline, because she still has her Grue powers in addition to the power of the Nightmare Throne.

i still believe that the crab king was impaled by the celestial tribute. it slowly both drove him mad and mutated him to colossal size, and the only way to free him from his impalement is to socket the pearl, as only a titanic, colossal struggle can free him.

Celestial Champion is controlled by JoeW from the moon

Shhh... Be very careful who you say that to, he may be watching and will wish revenge for being found!

This Rose Appraisers headcanon is that Maxwell still performs magic tricks, with various degrees of success, quickly hiding any failed attempts with even worse ones.

How long you got? I could talk for days about my headcanons.

But off the top of my head, Maxwell's very defensive of Charlie, including yelling at people when they insult the grue

WX-78 and Winona have a little sibling/big sister dynamic

Warly pays extra attention to Ms. Wickerbottom and tries to help her out often. Wonder why.

Every survivor except Woodie and Wilson warmed up to Maxwell a lot quicker than you'd expect. Hell, even Winona understood better. You kind of can't hold a grudge against someone too hard when you see your sister real similar to them.
