Well, the merms in the Gorge did say that their fellow merms disappeared into the sea.

But that does not necessarily mean they swam. They could have just walked on the ocean floor.

Wurt literally says "had good swim!" after "drowning" (you dont actually lose anything by falling into the water. She also laments magma pits being "too hot for swimming", and calls the moon hot springs "swimming hole". I think it's fair to say merms can swim.

Frogs can swim but i would advice you to dont throw frogs in the sea

how does it apply to "every other character" when theres only one half fish creature character who uniquely doesnt suffer any negative side effects from jumping off a raft into the ocean? and whos species are confirmed to have the ability to traverse through the sea one way or another like quartzbeam pointed out and you conveniently ignored.

Wurt is probably the least played DLC character, it would be in klei's best interest to give her some love in addition to fixing her many issues. 

limited swimming ability for wurt wouldnt only be fun, unique and lore appropriate but i bet it would also bump her popularity a good bit.

Okay so for one- Wurt is only like what a 3 or 4 year old Child? She probably has no idea what “Swimming” even actually is.

And TWO this Klei Official Vignette of a Merm Actually Exists-

That is a Merm Blowing Bubbles, so either they blow bubbles on land.. or they can’t actually Swim but instead walk across the ocean floor (why there are trees in this image I have no idea but the constant is crazy.. there could be an entire world under that water for all we know)

Wurt should ONLY be allowed to swim if MERMS as a Whole Mob can swim this solves a million problems because they stop getting lost on Terrain trying to follow you or return Home.

Klei literally updated HOUNDS to Swim & Bee’s to fly over Water… I am 125% certain Merms rightfully deserve to be able to do the same thing.

Even if they just “sink to the ocean floor and resurface up on land”

I love Wurt dearly and the first time you really get to use her she feels really cool. It was will fun for me to gather merms and do a whole bunch of chores but once you use her a bit some pretty big things stick out in regards to the QoL of using her, such as the tediousness of the king or how easy is to lose merms or the lack of indication for when merms decide to leave you.

She really needs, at minimum, a big QoL update in regards to the merm mechanics. Even little things like that could go a long way to making her more fun and reasonable.

A lot of people here have been talking about giving her more merm mechanics and while I don't think those are bad ideas, I much more think I'd like them to play up her sort of city-building and merm development mechanic. That's more interesting and neat mechanic to me, and makes for a fun a gimmick. But as is her merm houses are expensive and largely underwhelming for the effort you put into them, especially if you have a well-populated swamp. She wants to make a kingdom!!! Let her!!!

I considered the idea of being able to build contracts via the king that allowed you to upgrade craftsmerm houses into more specialized merms. It would be costly overtime, but in that way you could first build the king, and the houses, and then change the default merms as you see fit. I considered things like a "Farmerm" who could tend plants as long as the crops were planted within a certain range, which would help with acquiring more food for the king solo (but with less effectiveness). More job-oriented merms could have combat oriented nerfs. In this way you could build your own little merm hamlet! But maybe thats a little too unique... but I still like the idea.

Wurt's most unique mechanic is there to her detriment. Her only selling points are fish thermals, followers being fearless and rock breaking. When someone is looking for a horde/minion character Webber has the more durable and varied combat followers while also being cheaper and having overall more control. Maxwell on the other hand just has easier resource followers. Wurt's followers have abit of both but she asks alot more resources with alot less payoff.

I know hounds can swim, and it's mostly because of hound waves I guess, but hey, letting merms swim would be quite neat. It would also somewhat help with lost merms, as most of my merms get stuck walking into a river. Having said that, letting them just instantly move back to their homes when unloaded is a great idea, in fact doesn't that happen to spiders already? Anyways once merms "learn" to swim, then Wurt herself swim being able to swim wouldn't look too farfetched, so long as it's nothing OP, like maybe she can't go too far from the surface because she's young, or giving a penalty so players won't abuse or overuse it. Maybe spoil non-fish items in her inventory for a bit just like Toadstool's spore does? Or making her drop her equipped items (hand, head, chest) when she goes in.

The Merm King's trades are also quite crappy, but I'm pretty sure he gives trinkets because they were thinking on a 'multiplayer aspect', as in Wurt gets trinkets from him but someone else in the server will have to trade with the pig king. It's not necessarily a bad thing, you can just ignore the trinkets I guess, but it would be much better if she could get gold directly from him. Not as much gold as the pig king gives, obviously, just add it to the loot table, idk. Gold tools are just too good to pass up, I guess she can use the follower merms for axes and pickaxes but that doesn't help with shovel and hoe tasks. And he does give too many useless items like seeds and rot. I wouldn't want to see the trades become OP by getting rid of those, but honestly I would love to not have to waste so much time picking up that crap. It makes me feel like the king is throwing bread crumbs at his "filthy" peasants. Like "thanks for the fish, now here, take this crap and go away, pleb". It would be cute if Wurt could get like 2 points of sanity every time she trades with him, to represent her feeling good about helping her merm society, idk. But if he keeps just throwing random seeds and ROT at her, then I guess it makes sense for her to not feel happy at all about helping that greedy king. lol

As for the Merm King himself, I personally hope Klei replaces the hunger boost for an attack boost, even if it's a small one. I mean Wurt puts some war paint on her face, that screams combat potential but apparently it's not :c I'm very thankful for the sanity/health boost, but the hunger one feels kinda out of place...

 

TLDR Wurt is a strong character imo, I just think some tweaks would make her feel less 'incomplete'. Let merms (and possibly Wurt) swim because if something like a dog can, then certainly a frog humanoid should as well. And Wurt needs a natural source of gold, cuz waiting for meteors or earthquakes is... well, sad :c

How does Wurt synergize with ocean content? She has the least reason to go to sea after you get kelp.
