Should Other Mechanics Be Reworked?

Should other mechanics be reworked?

  1. 1. Should any of these mechanics be changed? (try to pick a max of three options)

    • Fire rework
      17
    • Hitbox rework (eg: spider queen retargeting people stood behind her)
      15
    • Boss rework/tweak (eg: Ancient Guardian and ocean bosses)
      33
    • Just do the next character rework
      50
    • Biome tweak/rework (more mobs and mechanics specific to biomes)
      33
    • Cave changes/rework
      17
    • Weather changes/overhaul
      24
    • Boats suck
      34
    • Combat rework
      27
    • I don't consider the above options as necessary

With the conversation on wildfires, I had a few ideas on a fire rework as a whole. However, I'm more interested in everyone's stance on mechanics in general, and if it would even be necessary. For transparency I would vote fire, boss, and possibly hitbox. These options are taken from complaints and ideas I have seen, as well as some of my own. Please let me know if there are options I haven't mentioned that you would vote for!

I also added boats as a rework option that I know will be probably the most picked, but it allowed multiple choices.

As far as things I liked to see reworked goes, there are only a couple of things. Some bosses like Ancient Guardian need some tweak, because as of now he is the lamest boss of them all. But above all things, I just want Klei to finish reworking the remaining characters.

some people like the boats you know?also by reworking ocean bosses were talking about only crab king right?because malbatross is one of the best bosses in the game and that ain't even me being biased or it being my opinion thats just fact

I actually... haven't ever fought Malbatross, or really done much boat stuff in general, hence my ignorance. But yeah apologies I should have specified. I know boat mechanics are often criticised and affecting the boss fights so I grouped then together, I shouldn't have.

nah.its alright people make small mistakes all the time and you did the right thing by apologizing

yeah ocean content is often criticized but there is a good chunk of people who like ocean content(Like me)and people who also like crab king and malbatross(i don't really like crab king but malbatross is my third favorite boss which is a unpopular opinion)

people's main problem with ocean content is that theres almost nothing to do and the ocean itself is really empty so there really is no rework needed for boats or the ocean because there still both a work in progress

anyways hope you have a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world

Why rework what isn’t broken? For the boats in particular keep the one we already have.. but add new ones designed for doing very specific tasks- such as for example: the large cookie thing is used for carrying pinch winch and heavy structures.. but there’s still totally room for a light weight more easily destroyable but can’t place structures upon single or two person boat.

Other than that I would like to see the remaining 7 (13 if we count the 6 Solo DS characters not in the game yet) Characters get their reworks- but I also don’t want them to rush reworking them either.. take your time and make something amazing.

The one thing in desperate need of a rework is SUMMER as a Season as a Whole, it’s just plain and simply not as content filled and exciting as Winter.

Idk, some tweaks here and there should be fine in the game, I don't think we need to touch things like fire or some biomes in the caves, I know we have so many empty biomes, but even if we put stuff down there, probally would be considered "random updates" without a bigger motive, the blue mushtree forest had a bigger motive to change, the others I don't see it happening in the near future or ever.

Please, Summer need to be changed or idk, add something, It's not about going to the caves for safety or dealing with the heat, in the long run, summer becomes just a boring waiting time for autumm, unlike winter that is packed with unique stuff, summer has Hungry Sand worm, cacti, and sun fish if you like to go fishing.

Well, now that I’ve stated that I want to see a Summer season rework the most, I’ll drop this into a spoiler as just a suggestion as to how Summer as a Season could become a whole lot more unique.

Spoiler

I play with random season lengths and season start times so I have a lot of experience with all four seasons happening unpredictably and like that old Katy Perry song (hot and then cold)

Summer as a season is just bland.. and when playing with seasons changing rapidly- you can’t just go hide in caves or oasis until it’s over, because it’s never actually just over..

But as a Season itself it doesn’t have much going for it, Winter comes you can expect frozen over ponds, icebergs, penguins, mactusk camps, no eyed deer, Deerclops etc..

Spring comes you can expect Frog Rain, rainfall, thunderstorms, Moose Goose, Hostile Bees, Bearger etc.. (actually spring could probably use more content too)

Autumn should always be the (mostly peaceful) easy going season, but it could have things added to it too.

The one season with nothing going for it except wildfires, overheating and antlion sinkholes... THATS the season I want to see reworked.

It needs new content- and I just made a suggestion in one of my newly created threads that Antlion sinkholes should become so hot they turn into Magma Pools, a Magma Pool coincidentally ties in well with someone else’s suggestion of wanting craftable ponds in the game, because while they start as a Antlion sink crater, they get so hot they collapse into a magma pool and spawn the (currently dragonfly boss exclusive) Larvae or Forge Magma Golems from the ponds. BUT... When Spring rain sets in those same magma pools become regular ponds.

Its highly complex, yes.. but it gives Summer season something unique that makes the player suffer during summer but can later be beneficial to the player outside of summer.

As you can see with the spoiler: there’s clearly room for improvements to Summer (which is currently the last and final season of what’s supposed to be an Uncompromising Survival Game)

Klei may add additional seasons later- but for now Summer is the last... and rightfully deserves to be the most uncompromising.

I can see the frustrations with summer, and I can especially sympathise with the Antilon situation since I play alone and therefore desert stone is useless to me.

Personally I think just a few more useful loots and mobs would be enough (save for frustrations with wildfires), given how winter would be miserable to me if it wasn't for Klaus and Mctusks. But mechanics like the lava sinkholes I often like to hear and think about, as they would be much more inventive. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Spider Queen is one thing, she's a mini boss and can be stunlocked with fire, but oh goodness gracious how M/Goose manages to annoy me sometimes (even when playing alone she can retarget her attack into Chester). I don't understand why couldn't they use the same AI that Treequards have and make Honk areal like Bearger's yawn.

Caves feel empty. As a pedant with OCD I always explore all Caves and they have nothing interesting to offer. It's an empty space with some Bunnymen villages and Spilagmites. I hope we are about to receive some love for Caves soon because Forgotten Knowledge introduced a new biome there. There are Ruins and Atrium, but they feel disconnected (in single player version Ruins are different layer below Caves). Exploring large Caves for over an hour is so depressing that I usually change caves to small...

Boats should have some better upgrades, it's unreasonable to have only one type of 200 points of durability boat. I'm not even talking about this

?imw=637&imh=358&ima=fit&impolicy=Letter

but at least let them be upgraded to gain fire resistance (Scales) or some additional durability. This would also improve fighting Crab King alone, because if you mess up some freezing, or 3 Imposing Claws dig into your boat there's literally no room for error (and by room I mean durability left).
This is why fighting Crab King alone, without extra damage from Spicy Volt Goat Chaud-Froid, Wolfgang, Wigfrid or even rain and Morning Star, is so troublesome - because these boats have no durability (200 vs 3 * 550 of Pearled Imposing Claws).

And lastly combat would be so much more interactive if we had some of Forge weapons in game. The code is all written and working, adjust values and cooldown timers if needed and add some spice to "hold F" type of combat we have currently. Special targeted attacks, magical staves, books (End is Nigh is a suicidal joke), reusable darts (make them deal less damage and use Stingers/Hound's Teeth as ammunition), etc. Make weapon choice more complex than "deals more damage so it's better". Armours could also use some additions but not that badly.

Biomes and Seasons tweaks. Even though this game is meant to be dark and hollow i would love to see more critters around some biomes so they could fell more alive, Hamlet's squirrels always catches my attention, hope to see something similar someday. Caves deserves some love too.

As for weather i think it should be less "passive" like numbers going up and down(Freezing, Burning, Wetness) and be more like Shipwrecked weather, maybe agressive plants flourish in spring(That would be nice to Wormwood as he is still lacking something), winter less freezing all the time and maybe something like regular snowstorms, autumn is a peacefull season so maybe a windy day with dead leafs flying around?

But hey, i really want to see Wickerbottom reworked, priorities.

The thing that needs rework the most is crockpot dishes. Meatballs are too easy to make, and a lot of dishes cant compete with it or give less stats than its ingredients.

would love a reason to actually make stuffed eggplant now that farming has been reworked

I for one love the interesting mechanics of sailing that has been added to DST. Unlike some people who basically just want to walk on water like in shipwrecked.

That being said... there are definitely some issues with the current sailing that aren't just opinions.
Some of these issues being
1) The lack of options when it comes to the base of your boat
all we have right now is the same circular wooden pancake with 200 health. Now while yes you have some freedom with what you put on top of it, I would like to see some different types of boats that create more options for how you make your boats.
my suggestion for this would be "Boat upgrades", much like mast upgrades, you add them to your boat to change their properties. and only one upgrade can be applied. A few ideas I had for this were "Grass topped" and "Shell plated", The grass topped one would basically have a layer of grass on the boat so that you could plant on it. but a downside maybe being that it catches fire easier? Basically like the opposite effect of the scaled turf, where things heat up faster. Or maybe no downside at all. And Shell plated basically making it so your boat is much more durable. having more health, and not springing leaks as easily or at all. A downside could be that you either repair it with wood anymore, and only with shell fragments, or no downside at all.

2) the lack of shapes of boats.
this one is self explanatory... its just a wood pancake and thats all we got, The ONE thing i would love is to have is a square option. thats all I want!.

3) Connection issues make sailing impossible.
as someone who usually has around 200 ping when playing with people because i dont play with locals. and as someone who randomly gets disconnected from said worlds. This makes sailing almost impossible for me. Due to the fact that if you disconnect while on a moving boat, rather than reconnecting back onto that boat, you instead get sent back to the spawn portal. and now that boat is gone. all the time you spent on making that perfect boat is now wasted because its sailing into nowhere.
another issue being with lag on fast boats... many times we've had it where there was a quick lag spike while I was traveling on a fast moving boat and became COMPLETELY unable to move at all. and i could only watch in horror as my boat collided into the edge of the world at full speed and sunk like a stone, bringing me down with it in the process.

and 4). Clunky combat.
the main issue with combat on boats is... well everything just walks/swims/flies away from your boat... and now you have to stop what you are doing to change the sails then lower them and lift the anchor to chase it then undo all of that so you can go back to fighting. Or you have to slowly row towards the mob while your anchor is down while it just keeps avoiding you or pushing you away (Malba...). This is less an issue with the boats and more how the mobs are designed in the ocean. Now not all mobs are like this... but sharks, squids and malba sure come to mind. If they didnt run away at all, then boat combat wouldnt be as bad.

Now issues I DONT have with boats are
1) "They are too slow"
this one i usually hear from people who tested boats for 5 minutes. They either only used 1 sail. Had their anchor down the whole time, or only used an oar... 3 sails is decent enough for traveling around half the world and 2 malba sails is perfectly speedy to go around the whole world.

2) "They are too fast"
often the counter argument to the "Use more sails" counter argument. some people say they are just too hard to control at faster speeds. But this is where strategic sail raising or anchor lowering comes into play. And if you have malba sails. you can drop all of them with just a few clicks to instantly slow to a halt so you can make that tight turn.

3) "They are too hard to control"
mostly by people who basically want to press WASD to move. but I can understand that it can be tricky in the beginning to get used to how you change the directions of the sails. But as for the just wanting to press the WASD to move. This would completely throw off the balance that has been set in place with sailing. One of the biggest appeals of sailing is the fact you can hunt for bottles and sunken treasure. which can have some VERY good loot in them, like thulicite, walking canes, and gems. and the balance in this comes from the effort that goes into searching for them. If you could basically just walk on water and still grab these chests. then there would be no real effort put into it other than just walking from point a to point b (and with mods, people can just click a button on the map to go to point b with NO effort). This is entirely why I dont want to have shipwrecked boats within DST.

Now. Of course if DST was more like shipwrecked where biomes were broken up into islands that you would need to travel too frequently. Then yes, I could imagine shipwrecked boats being much more desirable. But right now with how the oceans are mostly optional, with the exception of the upcoming tributes which is only 1 boss and 1 island . I would much rather keep the interesting, engaging, and immersive design of the DST sailing. The enjoyment I get out of sailing the ocean with 1 or 2 other players (aka "A crew of players" :D) in search of treasure for an entire year at sea is just so enjoyable to me. Shipwrecked sailing barely casts a light on how much fun I have with DST sailing

Boats are fine, even with cookies being the only shape. The problem is that everything else in the sea moves faster than our boats most of the times.

And so sailing just feels really slow and therefore boring.

Plus the fact that ocean is still mostly empty

1; Boat rework isn't that bad idea but keep in mind that RoT isn't finished and update to it are still coming so we can still prey  for some interesting idea for these boats. I really liked the shipwrecked boats, they made me want to actually gather the resources so i can upgrade my boat and/or get better (aka faster) boat while my approach towards DST boats are: "ok let's make fast enough boat so my trips to lunar island won't be as long as my waiting for webber rework" i think klei should add more masts, especially some cheap but not-so-great masts (but not too bad so it won't end like grass suit) and some variety to masts, also new types of boats would be great so we can make some cheap boats just to explore some of the ocean (mostly) for the lunar island. New islands would be great

2. Boss reworks would be cool, especially for Malbatross, Toadstool, Crab king and Ancient Guardian:
Malbatross - the first thing i have problem with is finding the boss, shouldn't Malbatross be a raid boss, like moose/gosse? easy to find, easy to kill? while actually finding malbatross takes forever or more
Toadstool - it's a really long and boring fight for...           lamps blueprints? i think you get the point (should i talk about the misery version?)
Crab king - the only problem i had with him is finding him but people still complain so i guess he still has his problem (and i think that's not his marriage issues)
Ancient Guardian - cheesing him is really easy, too easy, i think that gravestone exploit should be fixed and get some new attacks so he wouldn't be JUST clockwork rook with additional attack with epic loot

3. character reworks - of  course we want webber rework, right klei?        klei?                                            *klei reworks wes in the background like a BOSS*

Just go to a Deep Bass shoal and start fishing.

My problem with sea sailing is lack of mechanics and variety rather than the boat itself ... shipwrecked had heavy winds, waves, fogs, high tides just for sailing itself.

The only thing we need to do currently is to avoid sea stacks.
