The saltlick is quite an old addition to DST, far predating the addition of salt. As such, the crafting recipe is indicative of the materials available at the time of its addition. However, the "salt" used to craft the saltlick is nitre, a toxic chemical. Obviously taming beefalo is kind of a waste, but it would simply make sense to have the recipe updated to use proper salt.

That is completely wrong. Ornery beefalo is incredibly strong for Wendy, making her have essentially no downside. Also, a fully tamed rider beefalo moves at a speed that is comparable to coffee from singleplayer. Pudgy and Default beefalo are a waste, but the other two are very strong!

I'm not going to the ocean every time I need to make a salt lick and I don't think most beef users want to either. What I wouldn't mind is a SaltIER Lick that can be crafted with salt that has a higher durability.

I agree that the Salt Lick's crafting materials are kind of confusing. The thing is, taming beefalo already takes a fair amount of time... Imagine if salt was an ingredient,  it would only add more time to an already "long task".

Who knows, maybe beefalos have a special digestive system which canproperly tolerate Nitre... maybe the name could be changed to Nitre Lick to avoid confusion.

Preach fellow Beefalo tamer

Why not both?

I never understood this argument that the current salt lick doesn't make sense. Because it does! Correct me if i'm wrong but Nitre(also known as potassium nitrate) is used in many salt licks irl. Of course sea salt is used too so let's have both!

Edit: By both I mean seperate salt lick structures, one uses nitre, and the other uses salt

I prefer Default beefalo than other kinds. faster than ornery (and its minimum obedience is over 50% which doesn't require to be fed every time you ride it), stronger than rider. Just swap the saddle with saddlehorn than you can use just one beefalo for both transport and combat. You know, nitre is relatively hard to mass-produce. Only can obtained by petrified trees (and meteors) in the late game.

My only problem with the salt lick is that I can't lick it. The greedy beefalo steal it all...

Wendy already has essentially no downside. Abigail buffs her to 115%.

Beefalo also make the piggyback, which is normally a useless item (don't @ me) much more viable, because it no longer slows you down.

@Blue Moth you are wrong.

Year of the Beefalo is just around the corner, who knows all the improvements Klei will bring for taming, riding and bonding with our favorite salt lickers.

No, No, No. Obviously it will be the year of the Nox not the year of Beefalo. We need more lore you know, about the history of Nox.

Final Note

We’re already hard at work on the next update. With the holiday event season starting up we have a lot to do, so the normal content and character refresh schedule is going to be a little out of whack for a bit. We have the beta for another content update coming in November followed by its release and Winter’s Feast in December. After a much-needed holiday break in December, we will bring you The Year of the Beefalo and then (hopefully) be back to our normal schedule.

Sorry to disappoint buddy, it's already a thing. :wilson_cry:

Players: "Give us a reason to go to the ocean!"

Players: "Ew why would you do that? I hate going to the ocean, its useless"

Context is important. You need to understand how bothersome and disposable salt licks are to justify the trip.

Within the current mechanics and this idea, the ratio of effort is a complete drag and not justified. It would even go as far as to completely break brushless beefalo taming.

You need to know things before resorting to funny insults or rants.

There's a big difference between adding content to the ocean and making an established item now require a resource from it.

I really enjoy the ocean content, but to require additional trips to make something I need replaced often, having two tamed beefs, would not be a welcomed change.

If I may ask, do you typically use a tamed beefalo in your worlds?
