New player easy tips for launch

Recommended Posts

Assuming an easy starter map...

Cycle 1 problems: Make toilets and beds.

Cycle 5 problems: Start research and farm production. Keep digging.

Cycle 10 problems: Start oxygen production.  (easy maps have good oxylite)

Cycle 50 problems: Refine some metal. Explore the map for geysers, water, ruins, algae.

Cycle 100+ problems: Set up long lasting oxygen supply, typically electrolyzers and a water geyser. Invest in exosuits.

Cycle 200+ problems: Set up heat management. Don't build hot things inside your base, seek out ice biomes for easy access cooling.

When upgrading to toilets, have a septic tank dug out and already in mind.   You will need inbound fresh water and outbound polluted water.   Take into account the PO2 that will generate where the septic tank is as well.

Good to know if you are noob:

This is the basic stuff you need to SURVIVE:
WATER - FOOD - OXYGEN - ELECTRICITY

Then there is a lot of OPTIONAL:
MORALE, HEAT, LIGHTS, ANIMALS, ADVANCED MACHINES, ETC.

- Generating OXYGEN is not hard, you just need Algae or Water.

- Generating WATER is Hard, you need to explore, dig, build wires, pipes and pumps to get the new water source.

- Generating FOOD is easy, your little dupes can survive by just eating Meal Lice.

- Generating ELECTRICITY is easy, just use the Hamster wheel or Coal Generator.

One last tip, HEAT IS YOU WORST ENEMIE IN OXYGEN NOT INCLUDED.

Generally a wiki should be updated for live version, not beta testing. Now that's it's live, go nuts!

True.

So, use this Button on everything you see instead!

Follow the hints Klei has given you though their released titles

  1. Oxygen not included (produce it yourself)
  2. Don't starve (get food production up and running)

3. Hot lava (it really is, watch out!)

tip 10: the sporechid is the best plant in the whole game, and have extremely high decor value.

I wasn't sure if this was a troll, but this definitely is:

tip 11: sporechid is spelled sporechid, not sporechild.

:p

It's better to play ONI without spoiling yourself through gameplay videos and suffer some minor difficulty figuring out how game systems work (with a few dead dupes along the way) than it is to copy/paste very efficient designs without understanding why they work the way they do. Playing the way someone else would and saying "This game is boring!" is foolish, because of course it became boring: you're not playing it the way YOU would, you're playing it the way someone else would.

For example, learning through experiencing gameplay how kcal consumed versus kcal produced per cycle functions, is better than just copying the "# mealwood per dupe" math, because there are situations (and game settings) that cause kcal consumed to rise and fall in a range. You can follow the "rules" other people have discovered and then wonder why your dupes are still losing kcal stored at the "correct" number of plants. Labor shortages, travel distances and illnesses impacting dupe stats all modify kcal production; things you only learn to account for by playing the game, not following guides.

After 400 hours in, I just recently learned from reddit, that digging in an "S" up or down saves you the need to build ladders for exploring.

Also, conductive wire doesn't break if it's overloaded, it just doesn't allow more power to go through.

Running PW through the desalinator does not give you a wrong element message. Instead, it passes through unchanged. Same thing with water through both the desalinator and the water sieve. I hooked up a desalinator and a sieve in series and got consistent fresh water. This is very useful when you have multiple types of water you need to filter.

An extension of this is the squares grid...

With any of these you need to be careful where there is sand...

When did Dupes start disliking light while sleeping? I used to add lights to bedrooms just for the decor boost.

At the beginning of the launch preview. Lound sleepers are unaffected btw.

Nope

Cycle 2: Make oxygen.

Discover your map. why? :

1. all wild plants and animals will start to work when you can see them, meaning - production of egg shells, meat, growing etc. If it is hidden it is in frozen state. And you will need those eggshells, it might help open some pocket with 20000kcal of food etc.

2. Geysers does not work when not discovered. similar to point 1. geysers start to produce water, natural gas etc only when revealed

3. Planning ahead - if you know what is on your map, which geysers, materials etc, you can plan ahead and see what needs to be solved in first place. It is pointless to build kick ass algae terrarium room if you can find like 20k of algae on whole map. Maybe it is better to save chlorine from some places cause you do not have geyser - or completely opposite, you can destroy it safely or remove cause half of the map is full of it.

so as soon as it is possible try to reveal as much as possible and soon you notice game will start to be much easier than before.

Enjoy!
