@Astroknot I guess this means we can't agree on anything, then. Her depression and melancholic attitude towards literally everything makes her stand out a bit more from other characters. She's my soul animal, so to speak.

It's not just being depressed, it's having turned into a nihilistic person.

Also, Abigail really isn't semi-useless. Remind me again how useful a Pile o Balloons is against a pack of spiders who just crawled out of a Tier 3 Den, and have drastic ideas of what the human anatomy should actually look like.

Being able to go insane at will is way more useful then Abigail ever will in my opinion and playstyle. Kiting spiders out of their dens is super easy and I like to fight melee by myself, so Abigail just gets in my way. Plus, Webber is a superior spider farmer to Wendy in almost every way as well.

Basically I personally dislike Wendy, but I understand that other people think and play differently. So while I consider Wes better then Wendy, you may think otherwise. Wendy just doesn't fit my playstyle, and I dislike her personality.

Back to topic...

Playstyle. Aha. There's the crux. I am going to get my word in edgewise before we stop.

I would agree on the kiting thing, except for when Spider Warriors are involved. I swear they have homing. It's not that I consider Wendy to be better than the others, I find all the characters to be cool in their own ways, but Wendy speaks to me on a level I understand perfectly well, and thus, makes me always prefer her when heading out into a game.

Ok, moving on.

So you're saying that a spider is automatically going to be best at farming itself. NOOOO?

I always found the Wendy/Abi combination cute. Simple as that. I'd rather go on a genocidal rampage against the spider horde as them than as a fellow spider xD (or anyone else, for that matter)

Even if they escape to the real world, what would happen? Webber would still be a freak, Wendy would still be depressed, Willow would still be a pyromaniac, and Wilson would just go back to being lonely.

This.
Most of the survivors came to the DS world in exchange for something, or have some reason to stay.
Heck, wasn't Willow considered clinically insane? If she did get out, she'd likely spend the rest of her life locked in a room inside a straight jacket.
Abigail would still be dead.
Wilson would still be an outcasted mad scientist, now lacking the scientific opportunities of the DS world...
Max couldn't leave without Charlie without hating himself more. Besides that, what would he even do if he returned to the real world? It's hard to go back after tasting power like this.
Wicker acts as a sort of mentor to the others in her quotes and probably loves that she's able to bring her books to life; not a bad way to spend her days.
Woodie can satisfy the curse.
Wolfgang is...Wolfgang. Wolfgang probably doesn't care.
WX probably wants to seize the power of the DS world for itself.
Wes has the status of a god.
Webber and Wigfrid are the only possible exceptions that come to mind. But even then, Webber may not want to leave their new friends behind.
...I just can't tell with Wigfrid. Coming to the DS would have have driven her completely insane. And if that's the case, she might just stay in her element.

Even Winona if she comes into the game. Her life didn't seem that great, and she finally found Charlie, who everyone thought vanished. And her quotes make it seem like she takes everything in stride.

In any case, even if there is an exit, the group might not take it.
I could see some sappy cinematic where Wilson considers leaving for a moment, then turns around and runs back to everyone.

There's a funny disconnect in the idea that players won't want to lose their long-term maps yet somehow it's important that their characters leave. Is there any indication that the characters are trying to escape, as opposed to trying to make the DST world as livable as possible? To me, that IS the end of the game: getting them to the point that they're self-sustaining in a comfortable style. That's when I tend to want to start all over again, at least.

Well, I think that could vary from person to person. Although it's a bit hard to make an argument to stay in a world where *They* are always plotting for you to get stepped on by a giant.

Wilson got screwed over by Maxwell. After everything he's been through, I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted out.

Willow is very mentally screwed up, and wouldn't be happy in the DS world unless she could eventually burn the entire world to the ground. : P Assuming that Wilson cares about the others, he might want to get her back to the real world, with the knowledge he has, make a killing and maybe try to help her. Or not. Dunno. I feel like we're allowed to headcanon Wilson's character beyond "science woo".

I'd imagine Wendy would work up the nerve to leave. Preferring a slower death or some such thing.

Wolfgang. Yeah, if other people were leaving, it's a 50/50 as to whether he'd stay.

Wickerbottom? Yeah, she'd leave. Her particular mentoring skills are hard to put to proper use on death island xD

Woodie? Well, honestly, Woodie might stay. Not entirely sure. Depends on whether he likes the trees better in DS world or real world.

Maxwell? Yeah, I expect he wouldn't want to leave unless Charlie goes with him.

Wes is Wes. Who fricking knows.

As for Winona, I don't know enough about her character to make a guess on that. Same with SW charas.

@Rellimarual Yes, currently, but it feels like a particularly unsatisfying end to me. Like there should be something more to do, but there isn't, then I get sad.

I think this is my favorite ending idea on this thread. Its true that it might be best that the group doesn't go home. Maybe they could start they're own civilization? I don't know, but maybe also make it so that you don't know which option the cast takes... leaving it up to interpretation which option the cast chose...

I expect something like adventure mode but more difficult and after completing it the throne will be destroyed, all the nightmare creatures released and the world is in some kind of hardmode. All monsters and mobs look different, everyhing is hostile now, the daylight is really gloomy, you hear constant subtle nightmare noises and just have a really hard time. Also more new mobs especially during night/only during night.

I want there to be a portal that takes to a whole thing filled with lore to the brim, like a book, island, time machine to see the past, a happy ending (still able to continue playing), and the most exciting a filled to the brim...

That is a big part of the feel in DST actually. The reason it feels less hostile is that it's tone, quotes, etc. are more towards them realizing they ain't getting out and might as well make the best they can of what they have, with each other.

Let's see...

But say they somehow managed to defeat "Them". Aren't they the God of the DS world? Like wouldn't it completely fall apart and destablilize without "Them"?

It sure would. It's some parasitic dimension (the Ancients existed in their own world, somehow got THEM inside); they run on something, humanoidal emotions and strife in this case. Also, vices. Hamartia. Each char so far has been lured with a promise of something.

Maxwell - becoming famous

Wilson - his lust for knowledge through shortcuts

Willow - a place where she would not be considered malfunctioning due to pyromania

Wendy - a place where she could have Abigail back

Wolfgang - personally I think he wanted to see Wes again, but less detailed, it could be a place where his might would help instead of providing amusement for the customers of a provincial circus

Wickerbottom - showing everyone there's power in words

Wigfrid - a place where her method acting would make her OP thrive

Woodie - a place of solitude, nature and communing with Lucy, whoever she initially was

Webber - friends?

Warly - a place where his genius as a chef would save lives - literally

Woodlegs - a sea of his own

Walani - cruising the waves with nobody to tell her she's lazy

Wilbur - being the king of primates (instead of, say, an abused pet prop)

WX - being superior to meatbags, though I think he was created off a dying Wagstaff by Wilson thralled by Maxwell

In my experience, when everything is finally explained, the result is disappointing even to the people who have clamored the most for answers. Maintaining a bit (or even a lot) of mystery is the spice of life.

Affirmative. Enough of an open end is good both for your readers and yourself as you can expand the concept in the future.

There are two ways of getting home and one of them is staying here. Chesterton was right. There's a lot of power in the popular I Choose to Stay trope.

I dunno, form the perspective of Them, or whoever is on the other side to the portal, the DS world probably seems like the parasitical one. Nightmare fuel was taken out of their world like a natural resource, and maybe they're just pissed off about that and seeking their revenge.

It's me.

I'm on the other side.

Well, my bathroom during my morning routine is, to be more exact.

All it takes is one peek in and bam. Nightmares.
