How Do Characters Smell?

Recommended Posts

This is kind of a weird question, but how do you guys think the characters smell? o_o

I noticed that Klaus didn't actually have eyes, but he seems to sniff out the player with a keen sense of smell. I'm wondering, what's he really smelling when he sniffs the air?

In game quotes

Spoiler

Do they technically bathe? *Jumps into pond full of frogs*
Wetness (high)- "Döes this cöunt as a bath?"- Wigfrid(ge)Wathgrithr
Hardened Rubber Bung- "I wish I could take a bath."- Wendy

Think of all the things you interact with.
Worm Hole (open)- "I can assure you that it smells worse than it looks."- Maxwell (To think you’d jump through that)
Pig King- "Ewwww, he smells!"- Wilson (every time you trade with Pig King)
Red Mushtree- "Gross. It smells like leprechaun butt"- Willow (the smell of the caves)

Then again, you could hide these odors with the smells of prettiness
Garland- "It smells like prettiness."

Bonus question: What types of magical shampoo would they use :oo

  1. They do have noses so... Yeah.:wilson_ecstatic:
  2. Since his eyes and first mouth are stitched shut, he has to use his nose as a fifth sense.
  3. Yes but the problem from what I've noticed in fanart, the water is haunted with shadows.

No, it isn't if they can smell. Its how they smell. Not how as in functionality. How is in type.

Strawberries smell sweet etc.

At least that's how I read it.

Spend a few days in the wild, chopping trees and running all day long. Get all your clothes wet under the rain and let yourself dry while walking more. And spend a few more days. Add a lot of aditional sweat from being scared of monsters and sporadic paranoid mental illness.

The short answer to the tltle's question is: Bad.

Considering Klaus can smell it, the hounds can smell it very far away, and the smell literally wakes the dead (when grave robbing, obviously), I'm going to assume that they smell like a swamp.

I wasn't planning on adding this, but then I realized what I've just done.

Could be for a future update.wilson shrug.png

I propose an idea for this update: the Stank meter. It works kind of like the wetness meter, except it goes down in relation to your wetness meter.

%0-20 Stank - makes mobs detect you from a further distance.

%21-50 Stank - -10/m sanity loss radius which affects you too.

%51-100 Stank - you real stanky. -400/m sanity loss radius, -5/m hunger loss.

And ponds - riddled with frogs or mosquitos. The only potentially cleaner water is in the ruins (unless the worldgen hiccups and drops a pond on the surface).

The real question here is which character has the most stank..

The two most likely candidates for this would be Wolfgang and Wigfrid, due to their dialogue of baths. You might say that Woodie should be included in this as well since he's a lumberjack, but he shows that he has concern for hygiene in his quote for the rubber bung.

what even happened to this thread

They might all have their own particular "Stank" if we think about it.

Wigfrid: Stinks like meat, sweat, and possibly scurvy

Willow: Stinks like smoke and soot

Woodie: Stinks like sweat and tree sap (could that be an aromatic candle scent? Someone should look into that . . .)

Wes: Stinks of despair and imminent doom

The rest of them probably just have the general stink of fear, sweat, and more sweat :p

Spoiler

Point is, they are probably all well overdue for a bath
