Little known treasures in-game

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was just wondering what little nuggets of information you could share with me about the game that surprised you or you wish you had known when you started out.

For example, I was browsing these forums today and learned that if you murder your bird next to a fire you are more likely (will always?) get a morsel - mind BLOWN, I was amassing quite the fancy feather collection.

I know there are a lot of people that prefer to discover by themselves, I am not one of those people and have read most of the well known guides out there (can't say it's particularly making my life all that easier yet but it's a lot of fun!) so really looking for the rarely documented treasures to help survive.

Thanks :D

If you cook it alive, you always get a morsel.

One thing that amazed me is that...

Spoiler

stacks can be used to refreshen spoiled food

It is not, actually.

Well, the info is not, but is brought sarcastically.

As for my thing:

Butter muffins don't actually require butter.

OR

Feeding a pig 4 meats-o-evil makes the pig go evil, and somehow drop more butts when mercilessly defeated.

Not as much drop more BUTTS as make their butts GROW so you get more skin off them.

are you sure? I did a quick look in birds.lua and found no code for this. Maybe it is elsewhere, but I doubt.
But as Mobbstar already wrote, just cook them alive and you will get cooked morsel.

By looking at the birds code, I found that birds spawns flints instead of seeds for new players, if the world is a bit older (cycle 3 or more .. don't know what cycles are though :D) "-- only give flint if only fresh players are nearby"

edit:
what are "evil frogs" ?

I've noticed the birds dropping flint when I join a public server later in autumn after the other players have foraged all of it.

I've seen a bird 'dropping' an entire grass tuft, pickable! That was a truly weird sight.

If there is a Lureplant on the screen during Summer it has priority over smoldering for whatever reason. Which means you can potentially use Lureplants to protect your base during Summer. Only found that out because of discussions on the forum.

Meat takes longer to spoil when cooked! For some reason this took until a couple months ago before I realized this. I always assumed they were like fruits/veggies where they spoiled faster when cooked. (In hindsight it makes sense but whatever)

Yes it is true, if you cook at a fire you always get a morsel.

Some interesting things that made me say "Huh" when playing the game

Lureplants/Spider dens can be used as fuel

Lureplants can be farmed if there's "hard" turf around them (turfless, rock, cobble, carpet, marble, wood, etc)

Cooked monster meat = egg from caged bird

Feather hat increases bird spawn rate

Lureplants spawn near a couple of things: Drying racks, roads, and tooth traps (If you don't check on your farms like that fast enough, you may find all your tooth traps/jerky gone with the wind!)

Dragonfly can be stunned if you deal enough damage to her (And will drop another set of scales if enough damage is dealt while she's stunned)

It's better to feed twigs to beefalo and not grass (Even though they seem to eat grass all day long, maybe they're sick of it at this point)

Brushing a beefalo counts towards domestication

Tired of getting pummeled by hounds? Turn on your ice flingomatic and make an arena of already destroyed (but still there) grass/wood walls. Just torch some of the walls (Or let fire hounds do the dirty work) and watch your amazing all seeing science device freeze those big mouthed hounds up.

Setting hounds waves to "less" lowers the amount of hound waves, but not the amount of hounds in said waves (Which is nice, for me anyway, I hate being interrupted by the big monster meat blobs, but I like the same difficulty, at the expense their teeth are a little hard to come by if you don't find any mounds early game)

(Probably a bug) Setting everything to "None" still has: World Regrowth, totally normal trees, a random patch of a forest (Maybe a leftover remnant from maxwell's door setpiece...?) already landed moonrock boulders, periodically a rabbit hole, and set pieces (Not the skeleton ones with a couple items scattered, set pieces) meaning it is technically possible to survive on an everything set to "none" world, albeit not for very long, and not that well.

The turfless patch used for spawning a sinkhole still appears where a sinkhole would be if the server doesn't have caves

The blue amulet freezes enemies whenever they hit you (and here I thought it was just for freezing to death, hah.)

Hammering things (crock pots, ice boxes, chests) will make whatever their holding drop on the first hammer swing

You can repair walls with the resources they're made of (IE rock walls can be repaired with rocks and cut stone, although just using the wall to repair it is more efficient and less cost effective)

Butterflies flee from anything (meaning you can just have glommer/chester right next to a flower and butterflies can fly into you, perfect for that goofy sanic saddle)

(not sure if this works in DST, but it works in DS) reloading the caves/ruins rendered area (for instance, going back to the overworld) will change the gem in the gemmed thulecite statue

Tired of frog rain? Place a bunch of traps around you and just stay in the middle of them (or disconnect during frog rain, seems if the server restarts so do the froggies falling from the heavens, that or the three times I've done so are just insane coincidences)

Morning Star does more damage to wet enemies, so during rain (And also can be used to charge volt goats, for if you want electric milk)

Dragonfruit is like, the only vegetable you should farm (unless you want that new fangled scarecrow)

May post more if I remember more.

no need to post this twice :D
And OP stated that they will be morsel if you "murder them near fire", but that is wrong I think. You have to cook them.

At Serpens, I did not post it twice the forum did.
