Developer ImDaMisterL Posted June 12, 2016 Developer Share Posted June 12, 2016 Ahh, so DST now has badges, eh? And what nice badge arts it has, and emoticons, backgrounds... The card backgrounds are amazing too! And we got some nice pairings from Klei! Wilson x Willow, Wendy x Webber, Woodie x WX-78... Wait... what? As we all know, Lucy is a soul/spirit that follows Woodie and possesses all axes he uses, so DST confirmed to us Lucy isn't all just in his head. She isn't a specific axe either, seeing as if you lose her and try to use another type of axe, it becomes her, since she probably possesses it. WX has a skeleton inside him, meaning that maybe someone or something was put inside him. But for what reasons? Maybe they were trying to keep that person alive, like with GlaDOS in Portal receiving Caroline's brain? Were they just testing something with him, trying to see if whatever they were trying to do would work? What if Lucy was the victim and WX's creator used her body and/or brain to help him create him, putting it/them inside him? This is probably not right at all, but I wanted to share it anyway Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/68112-just-a-shower-thought/ Share on other sites

Quoth143
It could be Lucy was a victim of Woodie when he was transformed as the Werebeaver. She went to search for him one full moon lit night and followed the path of chewed down trees and unfortunately met her end when a tree fell on top of her after Woodie had just eaten it. As for why WX-78 has a skeleton, I have a theory and it has to do with Wagstaff. WX-78 honestly looks pretty similar to the clockwork pieces scattered throughout the land. The story of Wagstaff is that he created a state of the art radio, the VOXOLA PR-76 before mysteriously vanishing and his factory burned down. This implies that Maxwell had given Wagstaff knowledge in the form of technical knowledge so he could build this radio and possibly other products. When Wagstaff is spirited away to the island, he is angry that Maxwell had tricked him. So much that he begins to concoct a plan for revenge and it takes the form of a new clockwork. Wagstaff uses the skeleton of a survivor as a base to build the body around WX-78, then he gathers the material he needs to build the rest of him, which of course means he had to kill a lot of clockworks for their gears. Wagstaff dies before WX-78 is complete, or at least dies in the world he was residing in (it seems the island is in a continual loop for separate survivors so it's possible Wagstaff is actually alive somewhere in Their world). WX-78 is incomplete in terms of what its mission is, which was to kill Maxwell, but for the time the command was programmed it was programmed as "living being" combined with its lack of a functioning empathy module which would have allowed WX-78 the ability to sympathize with others who were brought to the island as well as the fact that WX-78 can be damaged by water, something that the other Clockworks don't suffer from. Still, WX-78 is state of the art, it's self-sustaining and is able to think for itself and becomes the latest victim of Maxwell. Gyths
Interesting theory, indeed! Judging from the coincidental odds of them paired from the cards... along with both their story and attributes... CaptainChaotica
Yeah, and that is _gruesome_, if you've ever read the original "Wizard of Oz" book! Essentially he used to be a normal human, but kept _chopping parts of himself off_ through axe accidents and replacing them, until he was eventually all metal and no human. Then, speaking of gruesome, there's the scene where he totally goes to town on a bunch of hounds wolves that are attacking them. I am NOT kidding. Wolf body parts flying everywhere, in a _kids'_ book. (The Oz books were mainly written in the 1900's, so...Maxwell and Charlie's era.) Then, in the second book, there's that creepy princess who chopped off people's heads so she could change her look whenever she wanted! Oh, and the desert made out of death sand where if even one. Grain. Of it touches you, you turn into dust too _and the desert is very large_... ...come to think of it, the ACTUAL, original, tone and weirdness of the Oz books kinda fits Don't Starve pretty well sometimes...people who only know the 1939 movie are missing out. There's even a legit, straight-up steampunk robot (although not CALLED that, as that term didn't exist yet)--clockwork, made of copper, rivets, has spats and a handlebar moustache worked into his design! Kids' books used to be SO much cooler. >:D ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/68112-just-a-shower-thought/#findComment-782945 Share on other sites

Said young have to supply said content themselves in different (read: increasingly stupid) ways. Possibly the worst thing was the censorship and bowdlerisation of the Grimm Brothers' collection of German folklore. But I digress. How about Wagstaff living inside WX? CaptainChaotica
Oh, are we doing the "Sans is really a kid in a costume" thing? I'm not really sure how I feel about either theory, really...I kinda lean more towards the "they both really ARE the weird fantasy thing because it's a weird fantasy universe and SHUT UP, that's why" side, but I dunno quite why. Sure, WX has a skeleton and for some reason needs to eat, but...but..old-timey robot...! (The going insane is a bit more explainable--that could easily be programming going haywire.) As for old kids' stories...I've got this rather large (over 600 pages, with fairly small print) Grimms' Fairy Tales collection book that's still PRETTY damn gory...like, one of my favourite examples has the villian picking out the heroine's punishment like thus: "She should be stripped naked, put inside a barrel full of nails (hammered in from the outside, so, like, a small iron maiden), and dragged down the cobbled streets of the city by four strong horses." ....YIKES. (And then, of course, it turns out that everybody had figured the baddie out and that ends up being HER punishment.) Then there's the version of Red Riding Hood where the wolf actually DOES eat both Red and Grandma and the woodsman saves them by chopping the wolf's stomach open...I'm not sure HOW close to the Grimms' brothers' original translation this book is? but we're _definitely_ not talking Disney. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/68112-just-a-shower-thought/#findComment-783559 Share on other sites

CaptainChaotica
Yeah, I always figured that, too. Some things in other fiction need organic material to run...look at the 2015 (ha) version of the DeLorean from Back to the Future! Mr. Fusion, anyone? And WX can eat--and get energy from--food rotted enough to be called "garbage", too... ...it's the skeleton that's the main problem. : P The other one I can see someone programming in as a clever way to keep the robot powered inexpensively. But WHY a skeleton? Unless it's actually like, metal or something. WX's overall shape hints at more of a traditional robot than the type that's built from the bones up with synthetic muscles and everything to make sure it really moves in proper human ways, but you never know... The jury's still out in my brain, but for now I say "robot" until Klei themselves says otherwise. CaptainChaotica
Well, we ARE talking a game in which everybody has bones in their _hair_...and even their clothes! As for the old fairy tales...ah, yes, you _are_ talking about what I thought you were talking about--the characters being WAY younger than what would be acceptable today. Yeah. I went and looked it up, and Rapunzel was only 13 when the prince shows up. Ahem. Yeah. Not to mention where the name "Rumplestiltskin originally came from, dearie! ;) ANYWAY. Yeah. In the version I have they keep in all the gore, but usually just don't mention the main female characters' age. (shrug) There's Ashenputtel (Cinderella) making wishes under the tree where her _dead mother_ is buried rather than to a fairy godmother, and then when the Prince shows up her sisters chop off parts of their feet to fit into the shoe and the ruse is discovered by the BLOOD everywhere...and so on, and so forth... On a lighter note, I'm now trying to remember this one fairy tale--it had this distinctive _part_ in it that I know, but I don't remember the beginning. The deal was, the main character had to "come to me neither riding nor walking, not clothed nor naked, and not in the street nor off of it" and he did this by wearing a fisherman's net, having one leg over a mule or something (an actual horse would be too tall!) which was walking at the edge of the road, and his other foot in the ditch. CaptainChaotica
(laughs) First of all, I'm a she, not a they. (But thank you for at least not automatically assuming I must be a guy--that's happened a lot.) So. The veeeeerry first site I went on on the 'net, way back in The Day, was a VH1 forum* about '80s music. One of my favourite '80s bands is Duran Duran, and so I felt like naming myself after one of their songs. After a little thought, I came up with one that had a title short enough for a username, sounded kinda cool, and which nobody else on that particular forum was using yet--"Notorious", from the album of the same name. (It's not actually my favourite song of theirs, but it's good enough.) A bit later, I decided I wanted a different username, but I wanted the people on the forum in question to still know it was _me_, so I started using the original name as a signature. Later on, I got into the tradition of signing off things that way everywhere, to sort of...leave a trail of continuity, as it were. And here we are today! (And no, I'm not gonna stop doing it just because people think it's weird. Heh.) But, call me Captain Chaotica, or some derivation thereof. CC, Cap'n, whatever. That is, after all, my actual username here, the name above my avatar--and my most-used Internet name in general, at this point. "Notorious" hasn't been more than a signature for (coughcough) years. "Captain Chaotica" has an origin story too--basically I misspoke while watching an episode of Star Trek: Voyager (most likely "Bride of Chaotica!!"), everybody laughed, and I woke up the next morning realising that that would be an awesome new username. It sounds B-movieish, superhero-y, it comes from Star Trek...it fits a lot of my fandoms at once! ...Notorious *Yes, I'm Internet-ancient. Hey, wanna hear about my Geocities site? CaptainChaotica
Oh, okay. If it's TOO dark, maybe not. Bear in mind I _am_ messed up enough to need antidepressants...I'm kinda not about the bleak and horrible, in my fiction, these days. (...and yet I play Don't Starve...but that's _cute_ dark, hopeless Lovecraftian nighmare-fuel, though.) Huh. I looked up Pathos-II (I obviously haven't played the game it's from, if I needed to look it up!) and just from the little spoiler-free intro article, I found out enough to tell me that if WX is one of _those_ machines, then Maxwell must also have time-travel abilities. 'Cos Soma takes place in the 2100's. Yeah, yeah, "Time is different here" but I dunno if it's grab someone from the _future_ different...I kind of always assumed all the Survivors were taken from around the same time. With Wolfgang and Wes maybe getting there earlier, as William Carter knew them previously from the circus they all worked at. But then, we're left with "How did a robot, even a wooden-looking one, get made and apparently become self-aware in only 1920 (or rather a bit before)? Answer...I dunno, I always thought maybe he was made by some eccentric genius...? (Not Wilson. If Wilson was that good, he wouldn't have been living in a little shack out in the middle of nowhere and desperate enough to go "SURE, creepy mysterious voice coming out of the radio even though it's not turned on! If you didn't: Pathos-II is an underwater research station from videogame "Soma", which, by the time the game takes place, is inhabited mostly by robots, some of whom are just human remains and microchips held together by Magical Goop Of Plot Convinience. If you did: I was just making a joke based on another piece of media that has robots with human skeletons inside of them. Err... I mean, here's an elaboration on my totally serious theory: Spoiler After the events of "Soma", Simons # 2 and 3 (or just Simon # 3, depending on player's actions) decided to build a time machine, to save the Earth from the asteroid. After years of studying quantum physics and advanced mechanics, their/his project was finally complete. But before using the machine them/himself, Simon(s) wanted to test it, so they/he quickly threw together a robot out of whatever was around and sent it through the machine. But, unbeknownst to them/him, the robot's AI picked up on Simons' moral turmoil on what it means to be human and also Simon # 3's hatred towards Catherine, developing hatred towards all of humanity as a result. Also unbeknownst to them/him, the machine could send people not only through time, but through space as well. After the robot never returned, Simon(s) deemed his/their experiment a failure. Meanwhile, WX-78 just showed up on DS islands. Maxwell was surprised, to say the least, but hey, They seem to like watching this strange automaton suffer, so he's not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
