the reason i don't domesticate beefalo is the amount of grass they need to be fed. it is way too high.

what i remember is needing a stack per day. i read this ages ago, so not sure if there have already been changes made.

Answered yes but only because I think that the saddle durability is a little bit too low and because mighty Wolfgang has to constantly switch between handslots to hop onto and off from the beef. Otherwise I find the taming process just fine.

Indeed. After having tamed more than a few ornery Beefaloes on different servers not even saddle wear is an issue anymore. It is possible to tame one without it bucking off the saddle even once (of course, mileage varies depending on each play session and what is going on on the server). Taming benefits a lot from a nomadic playstyle (from my experience), where you can obtain what you need as you run around and scour the world (crowded servers change the pace of taming since some resources will be exhausted, but on the other hand, if players are productive there tends to be handy alternative resources like grown crops).

Light bulbs and abundant mushrooms from the caves, cacti from the overworld and grass and twigs from Grass Gekkos an Twiggy Trees easy enough to grab at a whim to keep the obedience up.

Certainly not the case. Hunger needs to be above zero (or some low number) for domestication to go up. There is no need to feed a Beefalo fully each day. You feed it a snack for obiedience to raise so that it will allow to be mounted without bucking you off. If you just roam the world and gather twigs, grass and berries you will most certainly end up with a net gain.

Beefalos are very strong:

  • 1000hp that regens overtime; acts like 100% regen bone armour for you
  • permanent tentacle spike damage if ornery
  • permanent walking cane + mag speed at minimum
  • Can use lantern for light and still attack as normal

Beefalos are worth the pretty big time investment to tame, they have had enough Qol updates especially the bell allowing you to take them to caves and log out with your beefalo.

Plus if you make it too easy to tame a beefalo, it undermines walter and big woby. Big woby is a non-combat ,easy to tame Qol version of a beefalo used for movement speed and transport of marble pieces or whatever. Buff big woby first before even thinking of buffing taming a beefalo.

The ONLY reason why I dislike beefalo domestication is because of how they run to you after being fully domesticated for food.
Get the heck out of my way Wully! I am building!
Maybe change it so beefalo don't starve or only beg for food when their wildness is above 50% or at least some way to track it would be nice just so, like I said, my beefalo isnt in my face all the time about food.
I love critters but holy cow the Kittykit sure does beg.

Taming beefalo is painfully easy today, just ride it as much as possible and feed only when you need to ride it again. Since you dont lose domestication while riding it, hunger isnt really that impactfull, at best slowing your progress to max of 2-3 days. Alternatively, feeding it also isn't that hard, just use only twigs (grass restore way less), 1 beefalo eats 32 twigs a day, its not a issue to collect or farm this amount, especially as Wickerbottom. If you tame it in second autumn, then its even easier, your going to have full chest of twigs if you farmed them whole year/have twiggy tree world and brush save you up to 5 days of taming, which is nice.

It's definitely not necessary to feed Beefalo that much, in fact I think I fed my recent rider just about a stack of grass/twigs and a few figatoni over the entire taming process. Beefalo mechanics are super complicated to explain, but it's notable that Beefalo don't care at all about the fact that they're hungry for as long as you're riding them. In other words, you can just feed a Beefalo a couple twigs or grass and hop on, and it won't notice its empty belly for the entire duration that you're riding it, so you can breeze through the taming process so long as you spend most of your time mounted and give it a couple twigs if you have to get off for more than a few seconds.

I wish we had a better salt lick, made out of salt.

Other than that, i suggested a taming saddle not too long ago, that would make domestication faster at the expense of losing speed and/or damage.

The taming saddle could have also given you more time to mount the beefalo (useless on already domesticated ones).

i would be fine with salt licks with less colission, not being able to hit bounded beefalos unless using mouse and reduced ammount of manure. Is absurd the ammount of sh*t they produce ._.

Beef domestication takes some time to master but once u do u realize how simple and straightforward it is. I regularly start around day 5 and finish by day ~26.

An ornery beef is equivalent to being decked out in full ruins gear or even better. Which is why it shouldnt be easy. Keep trying and ull get the hang of it, its not impossible.

Kinda tedious when you have to pick like 528th manure but overall I think its worth the cost.

Hitch it to a Beefalo Grooming Station.

Stops it from running up to you and actually stops it from pooping too. And it keeps it awake during the night.

32 twigs/64 grass per day, but that's assuming you completely ignore it the rest of the day. If you ride it you only need to feed it like ~10 twigs or grass/day only when he throws you off. It's really not expensive

The only things I'd change is I'd like to be able to refill salt licks instead of having to break them to build another one and buff pudgy tendency somehow that is not just a higher sanity regen.

Nah, ever since Bell was added taming beefs is a breeze. We could talk about stuff surrounding them, like salt licks and skins (I am BEGGING for more skins for beefs. I need them so much.) But if nothing changed from how it is now i wouldn't be mad.

hurt visual cues when it reaches 50% hp, respectively 20%, 10% or the like.

There is visual cue when beefalo reaches 20% of hp, but it's only visible when ridden, sadly.

Visual indicator for obedience while ridden and not would be nice too.

---------------

I think beefs are mostly ok, but there are few things they desperately need:

- being considered allies and not being targeted by attack or force attack, only by holding attack + mouse click (bonded ones);

- not loose domestication on hit if other than bell-keeper players attack it. It's very frustrating to see all my progress reset just because somebody attacked my beef once or twice by accident or out of stupidity.

- reduction of manure production. I wish beefs weren't producing manure at all while domesticated. Seriously, it's nightmare on boat and on land. Recently I played on a server and sailed a lot with beef, and every time I went to base to bring resources and restock on others I brought 90-120 pieces of manure (not to mention that it stacks only up to 20). On land it's constant danger of burning base because of random manure near dwarf stars and poop overflow in general (listening sound of flies and watching it lying at base is not an option, neither for me, nor for teammates). Hitching beefalo to grooming station has it's own problems such as extra tedium of doing so every time, beefalo being not instantly mountable in case emergency, space that structure takes (so not an option on a boat as other structures compete for place).

- salt lick building collision should be lowered, ones with better durability should be available and in general they should be refuelable.

It's fine as it is.

Though if you are allowed to forcefully stop the beefalo from stupidly engaging enemies will be nice. (Maybe through a command on the beefalo bell, or the Tail o Three Cats?

I know just walking away with the bell will cause the beefalo to teleport to you, but usually it will die before you can walk far enough.

My beef died when i rode it past rock lobsters. The beefalo was in heat, sure, but i don't understand why it notices them even if you ride it and remembers them. It ran away from me to engage them and obviously lost the fight.
