Upcoming "CNY" Animals

Recommended Posts

Hey! So far, we've had a year of the Gobbler, a year of the Varg, a year of the Pig King, a year of the Carrat, a year of the Beefalo, a year of the Catcoon and we're probably going to have a year of the Bunnyman next year, but it could also just be year of the rabbit, like the ones you dig up.

Chinese Zodiac Years - 12 Chinese New Year Animals Chart

Anyway, I made this thread because I wanted to know what some community members on the forums would like to see in the upcoming years, and maybe some predictions to cash in on when the year does come along. Also, I wonder if the characters various Zodiac signs will eventually play a role in lore and/or gameplay, since their birthdays are made note of in their Compendiums.

(Also, I know it's not really CNY, but I grew up calling it CNY, and that kind of has more of a ring to it than Lunar New Year, if anyone wants me to change the title you can message me )

To start, I think year of the horse is going year of the Clockwork Knight.

So we’re halfway through the CNY chart? Hopefully Klei will still be doing support for the game by the time we reach the final zodiac sign. But I have my doubts..

For Rabbit I’m pretty sure we will get that Playable rabbit character a lot of the forums wanted..

Dragon I hope makes some of the dragon labeled skins into actual game mobs.

Snake I hope brings SW/Hamlet snakes and poison mechanics.. snakes can swim too so they would help make the ocean less empty ;)

Horse I’d imagine will be themed around the clockwork knights.

Goat Billy & Mumsy finally return???

Monkey- well we got Wonkey, Powder Monkeys, Prime Apes, Splumonkey so pretty sure that one’s covered.

naw be prepared for year of the depthsworm and volt goat lol

I have already suggested this and I can easily repeat. Moon bunnies making mooncakes. Medicine is optional. There is nothing screaming "Chinese New Year" more than that and if they don't do it for next event, I'll honestly be a little upset. We have the moon and we have bunnymens, it's too perfect to miss such an obvious opportunity.

i dont think anyone wants a rabbit character

I love the residual functionality that we've gotten from these already existing creatures in events past( ie Beefalo customization/riding, ransacking ability on Catcoon dens), so moving forward I'd love to imagine that same pattern happening and less of adding mobs that serve little purpose beyond fitting the zodiac sign (ie Carrats; most useless mob imho).

Year of the Rabbit: in-game Rabbits are all about speed. What if there were rabbit-powered generators for Winona! Little hamster wheel-looking things you have to add a carrot to to get 'em to run. Maybe it scales in range/power with how many carrots you add or maybe implement carrats into it somehow, one chasing the other! Or What if there was a new speed item related to rabbits. We have yet to see in DST a hat slot speed booster, what if it were some sort of magic item only craftable at pseudo science stations with rabbits in the recipe. Or could be a Warly dish that uses rabbits similar to coffee in shipwrecked that when consumed gives limited speed boost.

Or year of the Bunnymen, in which case maybe a trading mechanic for this underdeveloped faction. Maybe their society will be more farming oriented and add new content in that way somehow, they love their carrots! Maybe a Bunny King similar to Pig King and Merm King to make some other resource more easily renewable. Could add roads as part of world generation to the underground to find the Bunny King.

Year of the Dragon: Could be Dragonfly maybe give even more structures/items that use scales like a cold equivalent to the scaled furnace for summer usage. Maybe revisit what functionality lavae eggs have instead of just a lengthy process to get a cosmetic pet.

Or could be Saladmanders since they produce dragonfruit! could have super cool games to play and help give them more functionality beyond being terrified of accidentally aggroing them. Like feeding and taming them. Maybe they eat meat or leafy meat and produce dragonfruit seeds, would give Wurt a use for meat. Maybe they have eggs so you can transport them and hatch new ones like tallbirds.

Year of the Snake: Could be Depths worms- would love the addition of a new cave boss if possible! Some sort of mega worm or even spawning dens. Maybe making Glow berries can be farmed in some way. That being said; worms ain't snakes. But this is also three years down the road and with big updates happening minimum 4 times a year, there's plenty of time for additional mobs to be added before then so that they're not just shoe-horning a mob for the sake of lunar new years event.

Year of the Horse: Def Clockwork knight- maybe it'll be about all clockworks in general. Perhaps additional pawns mobs could be implemented and have chess themed mini-games.

Year of the Goat/Ram: (depends on the zodiac telling): Could be year of the Volt Goat which would be dope. Give Electricity more use in-game. Maybe there could be some way to harness a charged goats energy somehow and give Winona/Wx buffs. Maybe we see them become more weather related, and can summon rain with enough offers to a shrine. Could also be year of the Ewecus, less dope. But could give a purpose to phlegm, and more use to steel wool with new items/structures. Maybe making them pacifiable and able to sheer them for steel wool.

Year of the Monkey: Maybe Splumonkeys. Could add ransacking ability to the Splumonkey pods. maybe trading mechanics (although redundant with Queen Quay). Monkeys in a barrel mini-game. Could make them able to come on the surface? idk

Maybe it'll be Powder Monkeys maybe you can acquire them to be your crew  to help boat if you build shrines and make enough offers. Could do something with Quests for buried treasure to return to the Queen Quay. Although i like this less since they're not indigenous to the constant.

Hey, I don't do that!  It ruins the spawner.  : P

I'd be for that!

This is just seriously adorable.  I love how...concerned...the kitcoon looks.  XD

DUUUUUUUUDE yes, that'd make sense.  Oh!  Can I have a nameable bunny pet/familiar thing?  And name it "Usagi Tsukino"?  Well, failing that, my oldtaku Sailor Moon fan self can just have a mooncat named "Luna"...but seriously, an actual rabbit of the moon.  Perfect.  Can we make rice cakes as a new food recipe?  :)  (I guess we'd need rice first, huh. If done properly, it'd require you to water it way more often than other crops.)

Anyway, my guesses.

Year of the Rabbit:  Might involve both bunnymen AND regular rabbits being featured/temporarily different in some way.  Maybe we can make a rabbit shrine and put a carrot on it to lure bunnies near, I dunno.

Year of the Dragon:  Oh you KNOW it's gonna be the Dragonfly, you ALL know it, it's the dragon we already have in the game.
Pros:  Finding and hoarding treasure of some kind! Cool costumes/props!  Dragonlet pet should definitely get at least one skin.
Cons:  Well, if it was me, I'd be evil and have the Dragonfly go back to her singleplayer DS behaviour during the event, as in you'd better have enough fling-os during summer.  But that'd probably freak out too many people, especially players who have NEVER known the Dragonfly as anything _but_ a stay-put raid boss, so...

But if it was me, I'd re-introduce THE TRUE TERROR of the queen of flame during that year.  Just once.  :)

Year of the Snake--I dun want depths worms.  We've introduced a lot of other Shipwrecked-esque content recentlyish, let's just have regular snakes. They don't have to be poisonous, but they could, say, have a random chance to appear out of grass tufts while you're picking them and freak the player out..  Maybe a pet snake could be added, too.  Snakes can be cute!

Year of the Horse--clockwork knight, definitely.  In general I feel that anything that already KINDA sorta exists...esque, in the game, that thing will be used for the Year of the ________  instead of making a whole new creature, unless that's absolutely necessary.  (See:  how close to the Year of the Rat carrats were first introduced...)

Year of the Goat:  Definitely volt goats. We already have those.  Maybe something involving lightning/storms?  I've LOVE Gorge lore to make a return, but somehow I don't think so.  :(

Year of the Monkey:  We do have monkeys.

boy do we ever.

whether we want them or not.  : P

The Year of the Monkey celebration might involve some kind of tricks or games, since monkeys are known for that in mythology.  (The Monkey King, etc.)  The problem is balancing it in such a way that it feels tricksy enough to be monkeyish without driving the players TOO insane...

imagine the Dorado island with the fountain of youth and the pugalisk on it as raid boss Q.Q

You mean lost city of El Dorado? Something based off of that would be amazing...

I've never actually seen or fought the Pugalisk personally but I've seen videos and pictures and it is honestly amazing aesthetically and mechanically.

I would love for it to be added on some secret hidden island with amazing treasures and a fountain of youth.
