WanderingKid
So, I decided I wanted to check out all the new changes and realized noone's really done a review on them that's easy to go through. So here's my personal list I made and I wanted to share it with you. As always, please let me know if there's any mistakes or changes, or new information I can include. For example, the only asteroid type I know has ensure geysers is the original one, with the 2 cool steam, 1 NG, and 1 NG/Chlorine still. The rest I'd like to add to this list. So, let's start with the Biomes, what they look like, and what's included in them now. I'll use these names as reference further down in the asteroid type lists. Full Biome List Spoiler Obsidian Boulders These boulders come in small, medium, and large varieties, and are in every map. They're basically huge nearly impossible to dig map blockades. With Geodes, the can have different fillers within the boulders. I'll provide more details in the Map Differences section. Sandstone (Starter) Blocks/Solids Sandstone Sand Granite Algae Dirt Coal Oxylite (trace) Copper Flora and Fauna Hatch Shine Bug Muckroot Mealwood Bristle Blossom Bluff Briar Fluid Water Gases O2 CO2 Swamp Solids Clay Algae Slime Sedementary Rock Sand (trace) Gold Amalgam Flora and Fauna Pacu Puft Thimble Reed Dusk Cap (Mushroom) Buddy Bud Fluid Polluted Water Gases Polluted Oxygen CO2 Jungle (Caustic) Solid Phosphorite Igneous Rock Bleach Stone Algae Coal Iron Ore Sand Sandstone (trace) Flora and Fauna Drecko Morb Pincha Pepper Balm Lily Mirth Leaf Fluid None Gases Chlorine Hydrogen Salt (Oceanic) Solids Sedementary Rock Granite Sand Salt Fossil (trace) Flora and Fauna Pokeshell Waterweed Pincha Pepper (Currently massive die offs occur, believe it's a bug) Fluids Saltwater Brine (trace) Gases Hydrogen CO2 Oil Solid Igneous Rock Granite Lead Iron Ore Fossil Diamond Flora and Fauna Slickster Jumping Joya Sporechild Fluids Crude Oil Petroleum (if crude is locally superheated) Gases CO2 Sour Gas (if crude is locally REALLY superheated) Ice Solid Granite Snow Ice Polluted Ice Sand Wolframite Flora and Fauna Wheezewort Sleet Wheat Fluids None (unless melted) Gases O2 CO2 Space Solid Mafic Igneous Granite Regolith Flora and Fauna Shove Vole Fluid None Gases None Forest Solids Dirt Igneous Rock Aluminum Ore Flora and Fauna Pip Mirth Leaf Oxyfern Arbor Tree Mealwood Oxylite (trace) Fluids Water (Not much) Gases O2 CO2 Rust Solids Rust Mafic Iron Ore Bleach Stone Salt (trace) Flora and Fauna Drecko (Won't currently live long due to temperature) Nosh Sprout Dasha Saltvine Fluid None Gases Chlorine CO2 Badlands (Not really a biome by itself, but it's specific to an asteroid type) Solids Granite Igneous Rock Coal Refined Iron (trace) There are 9 asteroid types we can choose from now, and we'll get into more details on that below. However, each asteroid can also have different modifiers applied to it depending on your seed. Some are obvious, like mixed, small, medium, and large obsidian boulders. Metallic gives you more metal ore somewhere. Some examples: Geodes are additional boulders and they'll have fillers of different things in them. Below is just a few of the different possibilities. Another option seen so far include ice geodes that are above 0C (so, instant water). I'm sure there's more. Irregular Oil changes where oil biomes can spawn, and they'll be elsewhere besides just above the magma biome. Two maps have this as a default setting no matter what you roll, as well. A subsurface ocean will provide a very large Salt biome somewhere on the map, near, or in, the space biome. Asteroid Types: There are now 9 asteroids we can choose from. Below I'll show you an example of each map and discuss the basic features. Each 'core' that your printing pod starts in has a granite shell that you'll need a level 1 miner to get out of, and all maps have obsidian boulders of some form. First layer biomes are the only biomes you can see from your core biome. You'll have to go through them to get to the other biomes. Terra Asteroid Spoiler This is the basic map type we've all known and loved for the last few years, but with the addition of the salt biome. Sandstone Core First Layer Biomes Swamp Jungle Other Biomes Salt Ice Space/Oil/Magma Guaranteed Geysers 2 Cool Steam 1 Nat Gas 1 Nat Gas/Chlorine Verdante Asteroid Spoiler Forest based with Rust thrown in as well. Of particular interest is your only oil will be Irregular Oil. Forest Core First Layer Biomes Swamp Salt Other Biomes Jungle Rust Oil (Irregular only) Space/Magma Arboria Asteroid Spoiler Another forest base with more rust and more immediate temperature issues. Forest Core First Layer Biomes Rust Jungle Other Biomes Salt Ice Space/Oil/Magma Badlands Asteroid Spoiler Badlands has a biome that's basically a huge swath of Igneous and Granite in it, getting in your way of getting to what you need. Very small amounts of necessary materials. Sandstone Core First Layer Biomes Badlands (mostly that) Rust Jungle Other Biomes Ice Salt? Space/Oil/Magma Rime Asteroid Spoiler The Rime Asteroid is basically a frozen wasteland. Water is mostly trapped in ice and you'll need to get it out via your favorite method. Otherwise it's not that bad. Sandstone Core First Layer Biomes Rust Jungle Forest Other Biomes More Sandstone Slime Ice (Optional) Space/Oil/Magma Aridio Asteroid Spoiler This is basically the inverse of Rime. It's somewhere between rather warm to quite toasty. Forest Core First Layer Biomes Rust Jungle Other Biomes Swamp Salt Space/Oil/Magma Oasisse Asteroid Spoiler Oasisse is a huge Sandstone and sand first layer from the core. Expect to be digging sand *forever*, as there's very little water added to the usual sandstone biome. Forest Core First Layer Biome Sandstone. A lot of it. Other Biomes Swamp Jungle Oil - Irregular only Space/Magma Volcanea Asteroid Spoiler Volcanea's not that strange of a map until you realize there's a ton of magma that's soaked upward on the map. Your space layer will also be oddly shaped with some vacuums stuffed into where you'd usually have more biome. Sandstone Core First Layer Biomes Magma Swamp Jungle Other Biomes Ice Salt Space/Oil/Magma Oceania Asteroid Spoiler Oceania is a huge saltwater lake. Food is incredibly plentiful if you get to it, but O2 will be tough until you get serious desalination plants going so you can get your Electrolizers working. Best for a long game, as other materials besides the basics of survival are in short supply. Sandstone Core (Rather Large) First Layer Biomes Salt Swamp Jungle Other Biomes Salt. Seriously. More salt. Ice Space/Oil/Magma Hopefully you've found this helpful.
SakuraKoi
Corrections: The subsurface ocean is always right below the surface Irregular Oil apart from spawning special oil biomes near all borders also replaces the oil biome below (only matters for the Rime, S-FRZ, where the oil subworld is cold/frozen). Also it is not standard for any type afaik Geodes do not change how boulders are spawned, the latter still are blobs of disappointment and should not spawn anymore when the trait is not there Metallic increases the bandwidth of existing metals as far as I can tell Also, spoilers would be neat, like for my sheets: Worlds Spoiler Name Badlands ForestDefault ForestHot ForestLush Helicona Oasis Oceania SandstoneDefault SandstoneFrozen TheRock Volcanic # BarrenGranite 1 Forest 2 ForestFrozen 1 ForestHot 1 ForestMiniMetal 3 ForestMiniMetalHot 1 ForestMiniOxy 3 ForestMiniOxyHot 1 ForestMiniWater 3 ForestMiniWaterHot 1 ForestStart 3 ForestStartHot 1 CO2Lakes 1 Frozen 6 Jungle 8 JungleFrozen 1 JungleSolid 1 Bottom 9 MagmaVent 1 SolidMagma 1 VolcanoHole 1 HotMarsh 6 HotMarshSlush 1 Ocean 7 OceanDeep 1 OceanFrozen 1 OceanHot 1 OceanSlush 1 OilDry OilField OilPatch 2 OilPockets 6 OilPocketsCold 1 OilPocketsFrozen 1 Rust 4 RustFrozen 1 RustWarm 1 Desert 1 Sandstone 5 SandstoneFrozen 1 SandstoneMiniAlgae 2 SandstoneMiniAlgaeCold 1 SandstoneMiniMetal 4 SandstoneMiniMetalCold 1 SandstoneMiniWater 4 SandstoneMiniWaterCold 1 SandstoneStart 4 SandstoneStartCold 1 SandstoneSuckerCell Space 9 Surface 8 Surface Crags 1 TheVoid 0 Default 0 Impenetrable 9 # total 14 14 16 14 5 14 15 14 21 14 Barren-Forest- Frozen-Jungle-- Marsh-Ocean- Oil-Rust-Sandstone 6 6 6 6 5 6 6 8 6 Subworlds Spoiler Name Family Noise Temperature pdWeight Density Min Density Max Avoid Radius minChildCount doAvoidPoints dontRelaxChildren Border Override Biomes Biome Weight Biome Tags (Summary) Subworld Tags Features POI Number pointsOfInterest Zone Type Description BarrenGranite Barren Default HumanWarm 2 35 45 50 2 Barren/Granite 1 Sandstone Forest Forest subworldForest Room 10 15 20 4 Forest/Basic 2 - EnderCN
I don't think Terra is just the map we have been used to. I started my most recent game on Terra to try some things out. I got 4 significant pools of water in my starting area instead of just 3 and the basic starter biome was roughly twice the normal size. This is the game on ultra super easy mode as far as I can tell. WanderingKid
@SakuraKoi I had done some testing and checked irregular oil. On certain maps I was able to both an oil biome AND irregular oil deposits. Some only had irregular oil even when I re-ran the map without that being indicated. I had thought that would be true about the ocean, but I hadn't tested enough to be sure. Metallic has seemed to make veins of metals run bigger/longer. I can only assume they've adjusted some ratio under the hood during biome generation. As to spoilers.... For the love of all that's holy can someone please explain to me how the hell to use the spoiler tags on this forum? I swear I end up using one spoiler + /spoiler group and I get a two layer spoiler that just ignores all sense of reason to me, and it fights any and all attempts to copy/paste the dang thing out of it so I have to retype everything. It's not the BBCode I'm used to and I can't find a 'how to do things in THIS forum' kind of post. My google-fu has just failed.
natanstarke
So outside the amazing things added hi salt and forest biomes *-*, i can tell that rust likes fauna, ice lacks fauna maybe gulp fish later another thing and the sand biome also lacks fauna and flora. Boulders are a good conception but too big, geodes are more fun and should be more common. Forest biome seems perfect also salt. In oasis i really felt the lack of fun because of the lack of flora fauna in the huge sand around. " the challenge part it created where fun tough" I loved all maps various cool challenges that i will sure have fun with :). New players should be even more called to first play terra, arboria and verdante " they help more for learnings". 9 minutes ago, WanderingKid said: @SakuraKoi I had done some testing and checked irregular oil. Sevio
@KittenIsAGeek @WanderingKid You might want to add Wolframite to your list of materials found in the ice biome. Also, thanks for making this useful picture guide!
KittenIsAGeek
@Sevio I'm confused... I didn't make a list of materials found in the ice biome... I didn't even make this thread. I simply commented in it. =^.^=

That's what the files tell me. That seed for Arboria was 894986103. However, I just tried a new seed for Arboria that doesn't have that issue. So, I'm willing to be wrong until something proves it otherwise. This is from Verdana. Note the lack of Irregular Oil in the description. The oil biome is not next to the magma biome, however. Nearest one is above it, one biome up.

It's not Irregular Oil and in fact, if you try a seed with IrregularOil, you get the OilPockets even there (try seed 1408335978 on Verdante)
WanderingKid
@SakuraKoi If you're not hip deep in the code and the world generation values, would you be able to notice the difference between Oil Pockets/Oil Patch and Irregular Oil? You'd have to convince me that new and intermediate players would be able to notice whatever subtle differences you could tease out of the different settings. Hell, I consider myself an expert player and I surely didn't notice that they had some kind of difference.
SakuraKoi
Oil Patches are new and merely lack the two points of interest as well as the size. Irregular Oil spawns both and another one in fact. That's how you also get the POI back. In terms of content the two named are the very same except for the features. Oil Pockets have a bigger clump of diamond as well as a Cavity Pond (a dense mass of crude oil that can and will spill forth) while the Patches have a smaller clump and specifically spawn with an "oilwell" (geyser) as shapeless feature, not as POI (not out of 6 templates). What Irregular Oil additionally spawns, basically within the Oil Pockets is, Oil Dry, basically replacing all Crude Oil with CO2. On a side note: Expect them to update the worldgen since something like OilField is new yet unused
Gurgel
Oceania: Temperature, food, Oxygen should be fine from existing materials for a long, long time. But what is a problem is that there is very little metal. Also, temperature is too low for natural Peppernut. You need to warm them up and there is only individual ones or sometimes two close to each other. Reed fiber is also an issue, I am currently starting production from a single plant I found. Oceania is not difficult for survival, but getting anywhere is. Best for players that want a really long game.
Ellilea
I really like the points-list (the tables pasted below go too far off my screen to see anything lol), but I'd love to see a point section of what's missing from each world. Not that you have to add it, of course, I'd just love it

It was fun rethinking my strategy around the lack of a lot of otherwise common materials. Also having to insulate all tunnels as you dig through the desert ads that sense of a hostile environment. But some areas can not be practically reached until you either find a reed seed or a drecko. In my case that took about 100 cycles. That got a bit old after a while. It was a challenge though what i suppose those last asteroid types are about.

Lurve
Quick note about Volcanea: the lava pipes have abyssalite insulation, rendering them harmless. It's a vanilla map with a long detour to get to stuff on the other side. It'd be more interesting if they got rid of the abyssalite, so that lava heat leakage will eventually start boiling water and cook an unprepared base. Dupe sous vide. Not that you have to add it, of course, I'd just love it +1 I think it's important to look at what's missing from each map variant and ensure there are alternatives available. I really like what they've done with the additional world options, but I've seen what appear to be intended changes along with some unintended. For example, not being able to craft exosuits on certain maps was clearly not intended and quickly fixed. Right now I'm playing Arboria and the lack of gold amalgam means I have to go straight to steel to handle higher temps. While I personally don't mind the challenge as an experienced player, I question if this was intended for the 3rd of 9 difficulties. Again, I really like where they are going with all of these world options, I just hope they have a reasonable difficulty progression once everything has been balanced. It would be great if they added better information to the selection screen to help the player know a little more about the specifics of each type of map. Maybe make it an option that's disabled by default for those who want to be surprised. It would also be nice if the world type was displayed somewhere on the screen for screenshot purposes, as it would assist greatly in giving help on the forums when people ask questions and provide screenshots of their base. I just got a geode with water in it and a few pacus. They seem to have an abyssalite border occasionally as well. Spoiler
