Your base place?

Hi,I wonder how many of you look for a place to set up so long?

 

It actually takes about 10 days for me to set up. I always want to set up a base where the other 3 sides of it are ocean. With that,I am able to save lots of rock and only focus one side where all the attacks will come.

I used to think like you, but that doesn't make a lot of sense. You see, since attacks do not instantly occur when you're warned of them, you're better off leaving your base to somewhere you can deal with it. That way, the base is unharmed. Being near sea just cuts your possibilities of expansion.

 

However, I do like when just one side of it is the sea, since I can get pengulls very near the base for some good rotten eggs. I also like using the Maxwell setpieces to set my base up. They're cool B|

I've recently made a base like that instead of my usual inland tactic. With the exception of Pengulls spawning in Winter and that time they ate my mandrakes, I do think I like it better. I'll just have to build a better pet pen next time.

 

My tactic always is to locate a herd of beefalos first. Everything in the first few days is about exploring and finding them. They're to be my early defense against hounds, so when I've got them, I can focus on finding a good spot better. I also always pick a spot near or even on roads, so that my early travel is aided. Wormholes don't really factor into it, but having one in or near the base is favored. If I have time, I further search if a spot I'm considering is on a three-directions point so that I have good freedom of travel.

 

Ideally, my spot isn't too far from the marsh because I'm always short on reeds, but I like to make the forest island inside the marsh my default second base (it's also ideal for frog rain). I'd make it my default base, but I can't rely on its size, tentacles don't respawn so the "hideout"-idea loses its appeal over time, you can't cover up an opened sinkhole and spending all your nights fighting batilisks becomes tedious, it's filled with stuff that isn't renewable and that is at risk of being permanently destroyed if I'm around, and it's always at the tip of a map, so not very good for travel.

 

If Waverly comes out, though, I'll want to give a marsh base a try. If need be I'll console command a sustainable marsh. She's a witch after all - I think I can make a case.

I usually take a good 15 days to settle on a base location. I often have a very good idea where I want it to be by day 10, but I like to explore as much of the map as possible before I settle down. The things I look for: 

 

Beefalo

Swamp

Desert

Rocky biome

Pig King

Wormholes

MacTusk

 

Ideally, I'll be within half a day's walk (or wormhole jump) to the Pig King and the Swamp. I'll be within a day's walk (or wormhole jump) to MacTusk and the Rocky biome. The Beefalo I don't want to be nearby, but I want to know exactly where they are for early-game hound defense, easy meat, and supplies for first-winter gear. The Desert is the least of all my concerns... I'd like to be within a day's walk or wormhole jump, but if I'm not, I'll just build a summer base out there.

 

Where this perfect spot actually is depends on the layout of the map. It's often in a Deciduous or regular forest. Every now and again I end up in a Rocky biome, or in the forest patch in the Swamp. The Swamp is more likely if I'm playing Wickerbottom. If I end up with a map with a lot of branches/land bridges, I like to try to set up near one and use the bridge for my tooth trap deathfield.

I used to set up in a peninsula in an area with a nice amount of grass/twigs, but unless I play webber I don't find that there is too much of an advantage in that. Generally I just find a nice place with good natural resources and I can control where a giant will spawn (I always run to a specific corner so that the giant always is close to my turret and tooth traps).

 

Other than that there really isn't much that I look for.

My base typically ends up being:

-one biome away from the swamp

-inland/just off of the middle of the map (makes it easier to travel faster)

-close to pig king, glommer, and sink hole

 

I really wish wormholes were something I could factor in but unfortunately, they always seem to have very poor placement (ex.  most wormholes only take me one biome away or a distance I can travel on foot in 10 secs or less).  Rarely do wormholes actually transport me to the other side of the map.  Anyone else have this issue?

In Sandbox Mode I like to set up near a preexisting cluster of berry bushes (at least three or four in one screen), near a road or path, and the berry bush thing means it's pretty much always in a meadow biome but I like to be near a plains biome for rabbits and beefalo. I prefer bases on the coast because you can fish for flotsam right in your base and you don't have to defend the sea border because the only thing that comes out of it is pengulls.

I like to find a big savannah with lots of rabbit holes (my winter food source) and at least one beefalo herd and then set up in the middle of that. 

 

Most game worlds I've encountered so far seem to have at least one really big savannah with ocean on 2+ sides. I do a quick grass-gathering run around the coast at the start of winter to trigger as many peagulls as possible.

 

But I'm just a n00b who hasn't made it past day 72 yet so there are likely some strategic considerations I'm still missing.

I usually try to have my camp in the center of the map, that allows me to go anywhere in the map in one day (I always play huge maps)

 

Edit: if there is rabbits near, that's even better, before ROG it was my base place. Now i put my drying racks with the rabbits and the camp a little further

I am pretty new to this game, played a few days with alot of Wiki help, and I dont really know if I do stuff right, but here is what I do:

 

I always look for the Beefalos, they are my big furry buddys. No Beefalos, no base. Second priority is to ne near Rabbit holes. If these two priorities are met, I normaly look for the nearest Spider nest. If it is in rasonable walking distance, I set my base, not too close to the Beefalos, because they get really bitchy when they are horny^^. 

 

I kinda came to these three points for the following reasons: 

 

Beefalos give me protection when the hounds attack, I just run to them and they get rid of the bad dogs for me. Plus they leave the **** everywhere, which I use to fire my campfire (beside of building stuff) since cutting Trees is too risky in my eyes, I died three times to one of these freaking Tree Monsters...

Rabbit holes for meat farm of course, guess that was obvious^^ As far as I am right now, Rabbits seem to be the best meat source. 

The Spider Nest is for Monster Meat and Silk. 

 

These happened to become my "Most needed" ressources, so I always try to find a place where all of these are given. 

 

 

Normaly the first thing I do after I found my base (If I didnt find it while searching) is get some gold, for the first two upgrade machines, make a shovel and go look for berry bushes and make a little plantage, After that I build Farms, Birdcage and a cooking pot. 

 

Normaly thats when I feel my base is done and I can basicly survive forever... 

 

Oh and I fell in love with the hat that allows you to hide in a berry bush xD

The way you go about things early on is spot on. I do the same. Beefalo provide protection all day and all night. So early on, finding a herd is very important to me. Where there are Beefalo there's bound to be rabbit so that's another reason to go looking for Beefalo.

So far, I've only followed my friend's lead. He always build his base on a biome right beside the savanah with a lot of beefalos. I'm fine with that. If I were to decide, I would make it on a biome near beefalos too, but I also love to be near pig villages and the biome with birchnuts. (We're both kinda noob)

 

After a few failure around the end of winter, my friend went "Let's build our base at the pig's village next time."

And so we started a new game. It was a bad world spawn, We couldn't find any spider den at all and we found the pig village at the end of the world. To make the matter worse, my friend decided to build our base at the VERY EDGE of the world, in the birchnut biome that is unreasonably far away from everything except Birchnuts and pigs and deserts.

 

I don't have any follow up story for that because I angered two poison birchnut at once near 0 sanity as Willow, then my game crashed as I was chopping a normal little birchnut. And I couldn't rejoin his server.

first few days explore and get twig grass, 20 rocks, 20 woods, enough gold for science machine, burn enough trees for 12 charcoals, hopefully to get some gear, then go straight to marsh. usually take around a week. (of course keeping hunger with berry and carrots around, and pig skins nonetheless)

 

well i usually set up my base where i can see 2 rundown house nearby me. spider nest are plenty here which means monster meat and silk are unlimited.

 

put down 2 crockpot, a fridge, birdcage. Fill the cage and then you're golden.

 

no more worried about food here. if u run out of health, make Fishstick (a fish, 2 mons meat, 1 twig for 40 health+hunger), or Bacon&Egg(1 fish/frog leg, 1 monst meat, 2 eggs for 70 hunger+20 health) for long run.

just cook any monster meat then feed the bird to get eggs, its unlimited supply here in marsh。

 

 

after taking care of food, go out with shovel to gather 20-40 twigs grass tufts, and plant them near your base. oh and plant some tree too.

 

well, that's pretty much it.

 

its more interesting here at marsh, like watching gladiators battle everyday.

 

On FULLMOON go to umm,,,i forgot the name, of the biome where they're all birchnut tree, to get Glommer flower, while u're at it, catch some fireflies.

put down the flower near your base for easy  Glommer insanity refill (6/min). Oh and his poops are a great source of fire btw.

 

oh about hounds attack, well they're easy to kite and kill, but if you're having problem handling them, just place like 10 tooth traps on any nearby roads, kite them by running back and forth it.

I think people take too long to set their base.

Right on the first day I gather resources while I look for a base location, always near beefalos or pig village. I usually find one of them on day 2 and on day 3-4 I already have fire pit, alchemy engine crock pots, jerky and ice box

My base comes in three differents flavors.

 

1) If I find a pig village linked to another one with a rock road, then I settle down near the village WITHOUT the king, so I can have a lot of berries thanks to natural farms. If I need gold, then I just have to follow the road to the king and come back.

 

2) If my actual map doesn't have the above, then I settle down near a savanna. Not in the savanna, but really close to it, and far enough for beefaloes to not wander around my base.

 

3) If I find a big setpiece with carpet/chess like this one then I settle down here.

 

Also, I'd like to say that I always build a summer base in the desert, usually close to the ocean. Why? Because in desert you can find a lot of cactus (very usefull for my character), you may come accross a very small savanna with rabbits and sometime a Maxwell's Door/Teleportato, and there are less flamable things. Even if it catches fire it won't be as catastrophic as if it was a forest.
