SamLogan
Hello, With the new Patch, abyssalite is not a contruct material anymore. Tu use it again, you will need to refine it with a spacial material so only on the mid-endgame. A way to little force us to use the ceramic? chemie
not that big a deal. I am not sure which is next best insulated material; i usually just use sandstone Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/96120-big-change-for-abyssalite/#findComment-1090398 Share on other sites
lunazone
I like it because Abyslite was really, really good for being super easy to get. Saturnus
Is the substitute material as good or better? That's all I really would like to know because without a "perfect" insulator making experiments in debug will give a lot of false results. crypticorb
Haven't gotten the new update installed yet, is abyssalite still a construction material in debug mode? kolyapedal
it's a pretty reasonable decision I guess. To build accurate set-ups later in the game. We need also some new kind of metal, to get to build for example the aquatuner which really doesn't get broken and can work at high temperature Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/96120-big-change-for-abyssalite/#findComment-1090409 Share on other sites
mathmanican
Ceramic is good enough to keep a chlorine clamp on a steam turbine. You just have to have a larger area filled with chlorine. The image below is a shot taken after a few days of the machine running. All the tiles you see are ceramic, and oxygen is used on top of the turbine to keep the pressure requirement satisfied. Spoiler I figure I'll put a steel transformer in the empty space below the turbine, and then use it to get 4kW of constant power output. All other regular materials are not enough to keep the chlorine clamp working (just tested them all). Correction: It looks like insulated Mafic Rock (.010) beats insulated igneous (.020), and I haven't seen any temp drop from the chlorine clamp with Mafic Rock. So either ceramic (.006) or Mafic rock work to maintain the clamp. 0xFADE
Hell that is pretty big. Do you need space stuff to make the insulator now? That is pretty rough. The Flying Fox
1 hour ago, Fraxotic said: what happens to existing abyssalite tiles/ pipes and such when we eventually have to update? Nothing, they will stay the way they are but you can't build anything further out of raw abyssalite. 37 minutes ago, 0xFADE said: Hell that is pretty big. Do you need space stuff to make the insulator now? That is pretty rough. That seems to be the intended idea from what the patch notes says. You need isoresin along with abyssalite to make the super insulation. Of course this means we'll end up having tons of abyssalite around with nothing to do with it until the later part of the game and vacuum builds will be even more necessary then before. As decent as ceramic is, it's not a 'perfect' insulation and can still be heated to some degree. You can certainly heat it with hot materials being shipped through it on rails. Also means more coal usage to make ceramic so either use those coal gens more sparingly or get hatches going fast. 0xFADE
Oh yeah forgot about vacuum insulation. Oh well. Having 3 tile thick walls now I guess. The real issue was my reliance on abyssalite pipes. kolyapedal
So you gotta go to space to bring some new materials and then replace your ceramic pipes and tiles. Sounds kinda boring. Because going to space is a late game stage and usually you have a pretty decent base already. You'll only get to make some little adjustments. We definitely need some new interesting objective in the game. PhailRaptor
So.... what is the next-best to Abyssalite, now that it's going away? Obvious Ceramic is obvious, but that becomes available at a more limited rate based on how quickly you can produce Coal. Well the obvious solution is to only use ceramic where absolutely needed and use double walled insulated everywhere else. Running insulated pipes through insulated tiles also negates all thermal transfer. And then there's the old trusted solution of using vacuums. TLW
This will just push me to use vacuum. Requiring insulated abyssalite was borderline already; this pushes it from "borderline" to "way over the line". Well, it will once we get a release that's actually playable. (I wonder if they realize that performance logging is likely rather undercounting larger bases... it certainly is in my case. I no longer even try to play previews anymore.) Honestly, I'm kinda ok with this, as-is. It pushes things towards larger more complex builds. My concern is that they'll try nerfing everything but their approved end-game (TM) into non-existance. IMHO its sufficient to make such heat resistant material(s) hard to mine and/or requiring a ( more or less ) complex refinement material chain to make it. Also it would be great if we can have a proper air con unit, I have never used the hydrofan for anything. In the past I have chained 10-15 aquatuners in a row to cool gas. BTW "Insulated doors" please. Also whispering "Give me the atomic age stuff, so we can build Uranium rods and let us add moderator fluid/water whatever...Let me lower rods in the reactor too far, or let it run dry and make it go boom and really messy". The big opportunity to hook up the steam engine to the system, running it without exploity hackz. Yummmmieeee ! In concept, I'm okay with delaying or removing the ability to build with raw Abyssallite. However, I do feel like this will cause issues for a lot of people from the later part of early game into the middle of mid game. I would have preferred some additional hoops to jump through, like requiring a second tier Architect Job to construct with Abyssallite, or requiring the use of the Rock Granulator to produce some other form of Abyssallite, rather than the complete removal until Space tech. There's certainly also a lot to be said about currently mining abyssalite requires a 2nd tier Miner. Why require a higher tier job to mine something that is completely worthless until the very late game? As if we didn't have enough useless stuff that we need to remove from the surface (regolith I'm looking at you), now we also have to sweep stuff that have absolutely no use to keep decor penalties down. Changing abyssalite from a very useful material that people seek out to get early game so they can build things that will last a very long time because it would be thermally isolated to something that is uniquely worthless, in fact less than worthless as it requires a higher tier job just to mine in the first place, is a massive change that shouldn't have made it into the game without serious considerations about its repercussions. _Q_
They just should make it heat turbine that runs on any hot gas and cools it down, would be actually usable and wont require tons and tons of tricks/exploits to use. tzionut
Quote They just should make it heat turbine that runs on any hot gas and cools it down, would be actually usable and wont require tons and tons of tricks/exploits to use. That suppose to be the steam turbine, and i am ok whit cooling the regolith down using it, then send it to the dezoxidizer for cleaning polluted oxygen, then sending the oxygen to the base, and clay to the kiln for ceramic making. The problem is i have 9800 tones of it (from 9200... after research whit observer the 200 points of interstellar research) from the 1-st tier of rocket research. I don't have enough polluted oxygen to use it all, and the melting and vanishing solution work to slow, so i will be back to my ragnar pit solution for melting it. The solution proposed (shove vole) eats to little from the input to make a difference, and have serious issues whit heat and meteor impact...so...melting is the only option...
