What do YOU hate about Don't Starve?

Recommended Posts

If anyone has a will to write a complaint just from the title DO-o-n't... n-no... don't do it... doooon't do it!

I've made countrless rants, in a very bad format, getting my message accross very badly etc etc. and I think at this point, the game will just stay a social club experience instead of a survival one in the long run. Looking back, the game died as a survival-oriented one with the introduction of DST, honestly. Sad. But may be others could share their thoughts on the game, even if survival-adventure horror isn't what you expected or ever wanted? What do you hate about the games? Not counting the playerbase, the server management and the griefers for the multiplayer game, none of that, I'm talking gameplay, features, aesthetics, soundtracks, game design, that kind of a thing here. Don't Starve or Don't Starve together, from any version really.

Making this thread purely for the sake of seeing what kind of criticisms people have for the games exactly. Because, despite a few people ranting, myself included, there's little overall criticism to be had that needs to be said. The overwhelmingly positive reviews on steam and the pressure for positivity on the forum just throws concerns under the rug. The games are interesting, with lots of potential and with various things done right, but we all know the game isn't perfect, and there are things that are at least questionable, right? I hope this thread can at least get something decent going on for it. That said, I myself hope to find out what people have to say in regards to that too.

I'd suggest not going too specific in regards to character traits, items etc. unless you're giving some example from an overall point you've made.

that it is still marketed as what have you but it doesn't get updated like DST and the fact that it is separate, I mean Minecraft isn't Minecraft and then Minecraft Together, it's just Minecraft.

(buyer's remorse even though i got it for free. thanks klei)

^not sarcastic, thanks it's a lot of fun!

Resource variety: It makes no sense to me. I'm fine with the new sources of grass and twigs, as they can be even better than the classic ones, but why do they have a chance of replacing them at world generation? Grass gekkos can be obtained from harvesting grass and twiggy trees spawn for free with world regrowth. But if you get one or both of these 2 at the start, it means you have less grass or no saplings, respectively. About juicy berry bushes, they're also good, but since they completely replace regular berry bushes, you can't craft a bush hat. I'm mainly talking about survival mode here, since grass, saplings and both berry bushes are unrenewable.

Disease: Not sure what purpose it has. I see it as a way of forcing you to work on grass gekkos or twiggy trees farms later in the game (it starts happening after day 50) since they can't get diseased, to add some sort of challenge of something. There's workarounds like digging all your plants every 50 days, but it seems very tedious, especially when you have these plants all over your base for decoration. Disease also makes you lose plants forever in survival mode since, as I've said before, they don't respawn.

Toadstool: It's not his incredibly high health or his attack patterns (I actually quite like the fight with at least 1 or 2 other players), it's just the very, very disappointing drops:
- A lamp or a fancy lamp that don't give much light and don't last that long (unless you use spores, which are annoying to get and bundling them is a bad idea). Night is usually pretty short, so I don't see why a source of light has to be so tedious to manage (keeping a few of them isn't a problem, but since I like to build big bases for looks, I'd need way too many to light it up).
- The mushroom hats barely serve much purpose other than fueling said lamps (I know the hats slow hunger rate and the spores can also be used on mushroom planters for more mushrooms than usual) and even getting your favorite color of mushroom is up to chance.
- If you decide to fight "toadstool but stronger" you get an expensive to make and annoying to use narcotic which really doesn't compare to a pan flute.

Bee queen: Her drops are very good, but the fight is just not fun. A lot of almost unavoidable damage and way too many grumble bees. With 2-3 players the fight is frustratingly long, with more players the fight gets so easy it's not fun.

There's a few other problems I have regarding the game (mainly related to building megabases), but they're too small to list and they don't affect the average player at all.

Hate is too strong a word for it but there are a lot of whiny and annoying people on the forums.  High correlation with gibberish usernames and siezure-inducing icons.

We know forge and hamlet are on their way, shipwrecked jut got a bunch of new content so both branches are getting serious attention.  I know things aren't perfect but this game is highly moddable.  If some of you spent a tenth the time and effort modding as you do complaining about the game you'd have fixed your own complaints.

you know you just can grow million of mushrooms, craft thousand of funcaps, give them to all of your pigs in a village and start spore fiesta? actually 4-5 funcap pigs are enough to illuminate megabase pretty quick, but you can make more

Funcaps are cool, especially for wolfgang and, as you said they allow you to grow new mushrooms, which you can pack to create more hats for illumination later.

spore illumination is actually pretty simple

Combat is extremely lacking in DS. I suppose that may have been a intentional decision in early DS but now with the bigger raid bosses it's aggravating and not really interesting. Excited to see what they do with combat (Even if it's just for a temporary event) in the Forge.

The unfortunate split between DS and DST. I understand that it's because DS wasn't meant to be multiplayer in the first place and that's why it was never just another DLC but it's still a shame regardless.

The terrible netcoding is devastating to me since I live in Japan and nobody plays DST here so I constantly get 200+ ping regardless of the server I play on. Again I understand it's because DS wasn't meant to be multiplayer in the first place and in order to get good netcoding the game would have  had to be completely remade to fix it. At this point it doesn't matter too much to me anymore since i've gotten used to it.

I also agree with most of what people have said previously.

Constructive criticism is healthy for any game good or bad and I very much like reading these kinds of threads since it's interesting to see different perspectives.

I'm aware of that strategy, but I don't find it a fun way of spending my time for barely an advantage. You have to stand around pigs for a long while waiting for them to drop some spores and catch them. As I said the night is short so a miner hat or a lantern will counter the mild inconvenience that is darkness. I'd consider this for a cave base, but I'm not really a fan of those.

A belt of hunger is much better for Wolfgang and using both will leave you with no armor, so I'd rather go with the belt.

Everything I hate about Don't Starve I can fix mostly with mods :D, but if I have to hate something about it is the combat system! I wish there were more to it then just holding a button, moving away, then repeat...heck, even Minecraft has a more advanced combat system than Don't Starve/Together ..

you can just refill lamps with bulbs or glow berries, you don't need spores underground

Why don't  use both when not in fight?

we'll probably see new combat system in forge

To each his own. I love the simple combat system in DS because combat is always the least interesting part of any game and the faster you can master it and get it over with, the better.

Good combat systems are never boring

devs will take different look on the game with events. I think best ideas can be implemented in regular worlds

well the forge special attack things look very over the top, I doubt they would add those in the base game.

imo what would improve the combat system would be..

Spoiler

The ability to sprint (move faster at the cost of a faster hunger drain or something or even a new stamina bar)The ability to dodge attacks via rolling or something, that'd give like .1 sec invincibility, good for skilled players

Players can attack while moving (but damage dealt is halved to balance it out)

Getting rid of the force attack & clicking stuff to attack. Instead replacing it with an attack button, pressing the attack button will allow you to preform an attack even if there's no entity in front of you. (e.g. all other games with a combat system)

Raising the attack speed of all entities, & giving some entities a couple new attacks. (instead of making them into hp sponges)

New status effects, like adding back poison, maybe some monsters can cause "sickness" when hitting players which will basically like poison only it could make the player weaker instead of damaging their health & then kills them if they're affected with it for too long.

Improving range weapons by removing force attack & getting players to actually aim for their target lol

Adding something like if a player eats food when at full hunger they get nausea or something to make it that people actually use healing items instead of eating a dozen dragon pies.

The ability to knockout other players with a club, tie their legs with a rope & drag them to your base to put them inside a  twig cage, mwuhahaha!

I have a lot suggestions but they would change ds combat too much like jumping, swimming, more attacks, a stealth system which I'm working on all of those myself via mod, but the other things mentioned imo fit ds, make the game's combat much more skill based & would make the combat feel much less boring. Tbh ds combat system needs a complete overhaul to be more interesting or it will always be lackluster, no matter how many new bosses or armor klei adds in form of updates or dlc.

This is all my opinion of course & probably 99.99% people want the combat system to remain hold force attack, move away, repeat !

Combat gets the attention of all my complaints. From accidentally clicking on a teammate and getting a huge pop-up window that blocks my vision in the middle of combat, to things like hounds pushing themselves into you so you can't dodge their attacks by running. I know combat in Don't Starve is supposed to be rougher than setting up some huge trap for your enemy, but when you do have to throw down the old fashion way some pretty annoying things can happen. Shadow Creatures get lots of cheap shots by teleporting only an inch away right after you hit them, and man do I hate trying to manage my inventory in the middle of a fight.

Also Spleumonkeys can die in the hole they already live in.

No scalling system
Raid bosses are annoying
very few character reworks and some we just don't pay attention too
Warly sucks
SW characters suck
character design so far is sub par (I could of just said that)
no hard setting that might be nice I know I can mess with the world settings but having a built in system like Adventure Mode where it can do the job a lot better and consistently would be nice (that does not mean I want adventure mode)
no DST tutorial or at least a tip section for public players

Honestly when you take out the elitism, tier lists, and efficient vs fun  of the games fanbase there isn't really that much I can really complain about everything else is kind of just technical but they have their eye on SW now so I'm  really one a soap box about that anymore.

Some ad blockers allows you to block images. You can block a specific image, nothing else on the website will be affected, allowing you to avoid agressive stuff like this.

Ok, hate is not the right word. What i don't like would be better.

- Summer. Still lacks of something unique to do during it, like mac tusk in winter. Smoldering isn't fun, it discourage exploring, i would prefer it be limited, like a weather.

- Lack of variations over time : i would like to see new things over time. New challenges, new season variations, stuff like this. I'm also aware that, for various reasons it's not something easy to do.

- No reason to explore again : if i know that a place have nothing of interest, i have no reason to return here, there will still be nothing of interest later. Worse, some biome like the rocky biome (not the meteor one) are totally empty after you mined rock.

- Food abuse. Ice as a filler (2 ice would be enough), cooked monster meat giving egg without downside, cooked egg giving egg.
