What is Woodie's Deal?

Recommended Posts

As most of you who have read my posts know, I kind of like Woodie. As much as I've played as him though, I still can't help feel that there is something off about him. Am I the only one who thinks this, or is Woodie just a little . . . creepy?

He is definitely different from the other DST characters (or DS if you prefer) in a few ways. First of all, he really likes nature. Most of the others seem to hate it. He also likes most animals (as long as they aren't birds), whereas most other characters aren't huge on them either. His comments make him seem friendly, if a bit gruff, but despite how much of a "good guy" Woodie seems to me, something about him seems wrong. Let's just say I probably wouldn't want to be alone in the middle of the woods with him. I've read this theory somewhere else (can't remember where) but maybe it's possible that his "Terrible Secret" isn't talking about the werebeaver . . . dun dun duuuuun.

Any thoughts? Anyone else think he's kind of creepy, or am I just crazy?

I feel that his true secret is that he is a sociopath, detached from society.

His ability to keep "friends" around him longer as slaves to do his work for him, lack of personal care with his missing teeth and poorly kept hair/beard, and hearing voices from his axe..

He cares nothing for nature, truth be told, but rather only enjoys the fruits it bears since it benefits him directly.

If you popped out goodies when whacked with an axe, then rest assured you would be chopped.

Wow, that escalated quickly XD

I personally think that he does like nature, but I think you might be on to something. I think he might have some kind of mental condition. Maybe he has some kind of schizophrenia? Maybe he's a schizophrenic ax murderer? And nice addition of that picture. Maybe this thread will end up full of Klei drawn pictures that make Woodie look like a psycho :D

That's every woodie picture.

Do they?

Or are they only hearing Woodie mutter out what "she" says or would say, in the case of when you pick "her" up when Woodie's not around?

That wouldn't really make sense, as they can hear Lucy when Woodie is not even remotely close on the map if they try to pick her up.

You can also very plainly see everything that Lucy says when she talks to Woodie as far as visibly possible away on the screen.

The other stuff still counts, but Lucy's speech is definitely not a creation of Woodie's mind.

...however, it MIGHT have been before he was whisked away from wherever he came from.  It's entirely possible that when he came through the portal into Maxwell's world originally, Woodie's personality for Lucy manifested.

Who knows; that may have been the reason he agreed to Maxwell's deal all along.

Aha!  And THAT would tie into my own headcanon theory--that everybody who has the "strange new powers" already had something odd about them before they came to this world, and then the high-energy magic field kinda..._sharpened_ those traits into actual abilities, curses, shapeshifting, etc.  Hence:

--An obsession with fire becomes an IMMUNITY to fire (and possibly having a wild pyro_kinetic_ talent that she can't control since it only ever goes off when she's insane),

--Being way into eating and being a big strong dude makes you actually become bigger and stronger when you eat enough,

--Being way into books and knowledge makes you into a LITERAL "knowledge is power" type...

--Wanting your sister back SO BADLY means you _can_ have her back...kinda...

--And you can method-act yourself into actually BEING a Valkyrie, complete with "souls" flying away whenever you and _only_ you kill something.  Souls that other players/characters can see.

(Not to mention my headcanon about how the shadow/nightmare creatures work.)

Ahem.  Woodie.  In this case, really extreme fanatical...lumberjackness makes you actually change into a creature that LIVES by destroying trees.  As for Lucy, I've always held that that's the spirit of some actual person, and it MAY have already been that way before Woodie came over to the Don't Starve world.  (Which I still have no name for.)

After all, (a) some magic CAN work here, ex. the Codex Umbra, and (b) Woodie seems completely unfazed by Lucy's talking, even from _second one_ of you playing him.  Also it's clear she already has a relationship with him...acreepy, obsessive, stalker-girl-one-second-away-from-going-full-yandere kind of relationship, sure, but A relationship nonetheless.

Yes, Woodie is a smidge creepy himself, but I'm not going to go That Way with it.  No dead people, no unmarked vans with candy...And it's not as if he's the only unsettling character. (in a gloomy, monotone voice) Wendy is only one breakdown away from stabbing you all in your sleep*...

*Whenever I imagine what Wendy's voice would sound like in normal human-voice style, she comes out sounding exactly like Christina Ricci's portrayal of Wednesday Addams.  Is it just me?  : P

I thought she was the type of enabler girlfriend...unless that's what is it...or not actually a type of girlfriend lol.

I always thought Lucy was a very concerned friend/lover seeing as to how she's always telling Woodie to keep his werebeaverness inside, but also wanting to have fun letting loose and demolishing some trees/forests.

I don't think Wendy wants to kill people, if you look at her quotes for most player murderers she's mostly pretty passive but also pointing out how evil, and psychotic they are, and Webber her best friend "MURDERER = "Don't worry, %s. This won't hurt a bit."," I know it seems a bit psycho but she wants him to stay still so it's quick and painless and to end his insanity.

Oh, I don't think she actually ALREADY kills _people_.  But what's up with "Suffer, worm!"  Good lord.  Wigfrid, the _carnivore_, is way nicer to her "little foes" than Wendy is!  (Both of them still KILL the things, sure...)

In other words, I don't think Wendy is _actually_ a murder?  But she does kind of give off that vibe.  Or at least, the classic "creepy child"* vibe.  "Joooiiinn uss...it won't hurt at aaaallll..." (glowing eyes)

*Well, creepy juvenille in general.  The way I've got the dates worked out, and going by the William Carter puzzles, Wendy and probably also Abigail (before she died) are teenagers, not children. Still very young though.

this actually makes sense to me, is it your theory or did you read it somewhere?

Some of the speech lines from other characters imply Lucy is probably sentient or in some sort haunted, it's likely not all in Woodie's head.

Maxwell: "Ah. How have you been, Lucy?"

Wendy (to a reviver) "Abigail likes you, %s. But she likes Lucy more.",

Thanks, MTX!  It's totally my own theory.  I mean, probably somebody somewhere else has come up with it seperately, but I haven't actually read something similar myself, yet.

It _is_ influenced by fantasy series I've read such as Xanth (anybody conceived there is born with some kind of magical talent/nature, because the whole land has this powerful magical field) and Discworld (belief can make things real, since Discworld is only seperated from other realities by a _thin_ bubble) but as for applying those ideas to the Don't Starve universe, that's all me. :D

I personally think that Wigfrid is kinder since Vikings do have some respect for their foes and the dead ones. In the case of Wendy, she is just really REALLY depressed and she misses her sister :(

When it comes to Woodie, never thought of him being creepy... but those offcial art O_o

Well, yeah, I mean I do still feel sorry for her.  Still--"Suffer, worm"?  What did that little rabbit ever do to you, Wendy?  Now, saying that to a FROG I understand...

At any rate, she's still a bit spooky.  I'm kinda with Wolfgang when he looks at her in together "Tiny scary lady!"

As for the flirting, thank GODS that doesn't happen on my server...yet. We just have cooperation, cluelessness, the occasional newb, dying over and over again to the same thing 'cos you really need your stuff back, and, of course, tree puns.  Lots and lots of tree puns.

Incidentally the player who shows up the most often on my server? mains as Woodie.   : P
