The dilemma of actually progressing the game from Klei's POV

Recommended Posts

Let's say klei finally says alright enough of these skilltrees, lets finish up the lore, wrap the story up and have them beat the final boss Charlie. After that, what is left for them to develop? What is left for the players to do after beating charlie and getting all the godlike items? Not much.

It's like beating the moon lord in terraria or killing ender dragon in minecraft, what's left after that? not much besides mods and maybe building a good base. That's why I quit playing them it's a finished story. But I've played and followed DST since 2019 with thousands of hours and you know why? Because the story is still not finished.

This is why they have been making char reworks, skilltrees, and qol  for years now, they want to continue holding off the playerbase to the end so they can push skin drops for many years and continue the cash cow. I would say they've done a good job of doing that for the past few years now. Just the rifts and skilltrees alone have taken 3 years.

If klei was focused on wrapping this game up since ~2020 after they dropped CC, it would be done by now. it's smart what they're doing and has extended this game's life by several years and added hundreds of buyable skins. Is it healthy for the game in the long run? Not really but the money continues pouring in and people remain somewhat interested.

Could it be something related to the Tencent acquisition? Maybe. They might feel pressured in generating more revenue and retaining the playerbase. I don't blame them at all, they're owned by one of the biggest game companies in the world right now.

- We get two copies of the game for the price of one.
- Skins and characters are free as long as you play the game.
- The game has localized prices.
- There's endless examples of Klei giving out stuff for free when they could very well have paywalled it, here's a few:
The Gorge (and its boxes)
The Forge (and its boxes)
Don't Starve Together to players that had Don't Starve alone when DST beta first started
Hot Lava to people that played the beta for it
Event skins (Valentines day and such)
Make a drawing and get a skin Christmas/Halloween events
A bunch of freebies when they made the crossover with Terraria
Twitch Drops (I guess could be considered a marketing tactic but just look at the examples above...)

Some of these happened before and some after they were "acquired" by Tencent, nothing changed.

I am still having fun playing Don't Starve Together, I am sorry if you aren't, hopefully you can find other games.

Would it be the end of Don't Starve with an end in DST ?

Will they completely stop with this franchise one day ?

If we imagine an end with a Charlie's fight, then make her playable, the game could go bigger until this point. It could be a good end.

The games you mentioned have the problem of not giving any interesting challenges because you unlock weapons and armors with better numbers. That wasnt the case of dst before the rifts non sense... every boss loot was useful so you could repeat them while building.

Now you unlock these cheap, high number, bloated with perks, reparaible weapons and armors which, in company of unbalanced skill tree perks, makes boss fights in late a cake walk or make their loot obsolete...just see how useless is shield of terror when it was a good weapon before or how cleaning the ruins (before was a fun thing to do) now is easier and only might bring green gems as useful loot because everything else is obsolete

The progression is f@cked up

yeh the surprising seed makes me excited at the first time but lately I found they are the reason to make me AFK once step into "endgame"

Personally, I don't like Tencent, but I don't think "Tencent is responsible for the decline in quality of DST and Klei's strategies" is correct, there is no evidence to prove it, I disagree with you.

It's honestly hard to name a company with more consumer-friendly monetization of a game that gets continuous updates. Klei's pretty great about it, with all skins and characters being obtainable without spending money. I'd say they and Ghost Ship Games (Deep Rock Galactic) are on par with each other, since DRG is overall less monetized than DST, but has a handful of cosmetic sets that are only available via purchase (while everything else, including 90% of all cosmetics, are only available via gameplay).

I agree with you but I'd prefer If DST was like Rimworld for example and actually trying to get me to spend money on DLC so we would have content for players that want to pay.

DST is in a state where there is a defense for not giving us a lot of new content but only because it is free, we don't even know how many players would be willing to buy a DLC because it has never happened. DS on the other hand is a single player game where DLCs make a good spin on the base game that anyone would love to have in DST, I know klei doesn't want to split the playerbase so make it 30-40% more expensive but If someone hosts the DLC anyone can join the server without owning it.

@DegenerateFurry

For sure klei only has optional purchases just like any major game out right now (Counterstrike, Fortnite, COD, etc.)

That's the standard nowadays because p2w has always been crap.

That being said if klei released a DLC, I think majority of the playerbase would probably buy it. People are so starved of content right now.

I think Tencent part was the right move when the pandemic happened and the worry of them actually losing out on revenue or progress in development to have stable support by a larger company behind them. The best thing is that they still earn money from this game to fund their other ambitious and higher quality indie-like games to be developed, feeding their developers and supporting smaller ones.

Klei has plenty of choices they can make for this game's development. The Constant map is basically a finished product that is getting extras now from what it feels like and that's fine, I think we're getting cool stuff and potentially with this many assets they have more choices on developing different survival scenarios.

As this is a sandbox game there's no real goal to doing anything, you can basically live like a plant and just eat things and survive as long as you like or kill all bosses, do sea adventures and scavenge for loot by doing whatever you want.

Enjoy the game while it or your interest lasts. Nothing lasts forever, neither us. Come up with ideas and discuss on how to improve if you like, it's useful for Klei to know what people want from this game.

I believe that what could solve the problem a little would be to do something similar to Grounded, a newgame+

making creatures and bosses stronger, with more HP and improved loot

an upgrade mechanic for equipment, etc., and scaling with the level of the world

I say this because I really liked the Grounded experience, it made the game much more endless

but this is just an idea that I believe is not that difficult to implement and that would make the game more lasting even after finishing the updates and the lore

Terraria, Minecraft, and DST are all sand box games. There are lots of things you can still do after beating them. Hell, many Minecraft players don't even think that the game's really started until after you beat the dragon simply because of how many upgrades are locked behind it. There are tons of things you can do after beating the game. It was what? 4 years between the introduction of the Ancient Fuelweaver and Celestial Champion? AFW was the closest thing the game had to a final boss during that time, and that didn't stop people from playing the game once he was beaten.

Losing ambition, I guess developers have lost their imagination and become more lazy after being acquired by Tencent. Now DST is old, referring to games and developers.

What has Klei done to imply they have lost ambition? If anything the skill trees, while controversial, were a very ambitious move on their part. The game is doing fine, if it's not the direction you like then that's fine too. Devs have to cater to a large audience as well as balancing their own interests and ideas, not everybody is going to be satisfied. Just part of creative work.

@Theukon-dos

I haven't touched minecraft or terraria after beating the "final bosses" and getting all the best gear and building a decent base.

There was no point after that for me personally.

I feel like that is the thing with all sandbox games, some people play till 10k days and some people get bored after the first year but I would say most people probably are leaning towards getting bored after killing the final boss (charlie/wagstaff/whatever)

The boxes I referred to in my previous post were the ones you would get for getting an account level while the respective events were running.

You mean, the boxes that contained items from those bundles?

1 the DST becomes unbearable, in which the value collapses. 2 no more updates to the DVDs, 3 there are no large-scale events like melting pot or gluttony. 4 lack of game content.

DS

Only small content updates to sell skin. There is something wrong with the translation of app. I hope you understand it.
