I kinda hope it does. Perhaps once you are a Wonkey, interacting with either the Queen or the unnatural portal could allow you to allocate skill points in the tree. I would want it to include some way of permanently being Wonkey regardless of trinkets. I enjoy playing as Wonkey but I hate losing an inventory slot as well as losing the curse on death.

Some other generic perks could be ability to craft the wooden sword and pirate bandana. Maybe reduce the time it takes to activate the monkey run, etc.

Shadow affinity could make splumonkeys (regular and shadow) neutral towards you and possibly even befriended

Lunar affinity could offer some special interaction with the Unnatural Portal, although I'm not creative enough to think of what it could be...

Edit: Made it a poll

punishment

Everything in this game is a punishment.
I don't agree that the insight system should be consistent with time spent in game, but you can be rid of the monkey curse inside of a day cycle.

If you choose to stay as wonkey, you're not doing it because because you're stuck. I think wonkey should get a skill tree, and I really wish I could just say "Yes" without elaborating.
Elaborating is for losers and I have just proven myself as such.

I made it a poll so you don't have to elaborate. Sorry about that

An ostensible punishment in fact being an opportunity to turn to your advantage is very much in the spirit of DST. People already have talked about turning Wonkey in order to temporarily escape from the drawbacks of your chosen character.

A skill tree could work.

Like the whole Moon Quay thing I believe Wonkey could have been more, curse or not there’s material to build something funny, so yeah, like all characters, I think getting some skills would do well.

There is just a little… skill issue… you can only respec at the character selection screen. Making you'd be able to do it only once in the currently state.

A solution that I brought up since the Wilson refresh (knowing well this would happen for others) would be to add another Celestial Orb craft to remove all your skills. I don’t think there is much options aside if not having to redo Wonkey skills on getting the curse or making them available at the portal.

I'd pick the orb thing personally to not make the Moon Quay even more trivial.

I really want it I think it would be a cool way to add a character with more sailing perks. I feel like a way to craft battle paddles would be a no-brainer, which would be nice since rn you can only get it from prime mates.

I dunno how I'd feel about that unless Wonkey becomes pickable from the start.

Otherwise... sailing to get access to the sailing character would be a bit counterintuitive imo.

I know it's silly but what if one of the skill tree perks was the ability to pick wonkey from the start? :wilsconnivingsmile:

The way I see it, Wonkey is a punishment, doesn't make a ton of sense for a punishment to potentially have a better skill tree than the characters you're intended to play as.

It's a very bad punishment, always has been and there's no signs of Klei ever going back and making that update and the ocean ever good.

A skill tree could save Wonkey, a skill to be able to recruit all the other monkeys types to your followers would be pretty awesome.

A shadow wonkey form for its shadow affinity skill... wonkey turns into a nightmare version during low sanity or the nightmare phase... can recruit shadow splumonkeys!!

Wonkey is quite a blank slate to work on which is good.

Well yeah. The devs described it as a 'new outlook on life' or something like that, so it should actually be one.

Of course Klei could just go the lazy route and make it simply skill tree-less but that'd be boring and uninspired (in other words, I'm expecting this out of Klei).

Imo Wonkey should have 15 perks that get auto-filled bottom-top, left-to-right. And it'd be cool if its tree could look like a palm tree.

One branch is about monkeyness:

-If Wonkey stops running for max 1 second it can start running right away without having to walk for 3 seconds. This would fix the big issue of running only being useful if you don't plan on eating, refueling, picking stuff up on the way.

-Any banana-related food gives wonkey +15 sanity

-Wonkey poops periodically

-Wonkey can throw poop. Small dmg, aoe, stuns birds, heals Wormwood, fertilizes plots

-Wonkey harvests at half the speed of other survivors. In other words: faster. This would combo with the first perk, allowing Wonkey to harvest 1 plant and continue running

-Cave monkeys don't steal stuff with Wonkey around and have a smaller agro on Wonkey

One branch is about pirating:

-Wonkey can craft the pirate flag (needed for the banner) and battle paddle

-Pirate hats last 2x longer on Wonkey, including the Polly hat

-Wonkey can craft pirate hats

-Wonkey can craft a usable sea chest

Wonkey is still a product of a curse. And the skill tree is not buffing the cursed character, it's buffing the result of the curse. Therefore, the curse itself would also grow in strength. So this next branch would activately make the curse worse, hence why the tree would have to auto-fill itself upon transformation. In a way, this skill tree would put an emphasis on the 'both a new outlook on life and a curse' aspect of Wonkey.

Anyhow, the curse branch:

-Accursed trinkets now stack up to 40

-Monkey Queen will only remove 2 trinkets per banana

-Trinkets now stay with you after death (Wonkey ghost!!)

Now, as for the allignment. Either Wonkey shouldn't have it (monkey only ally with monkey) or it should be auto-lunar. After all it is from the Moon Quay and pirate monkeys seem to praise the moon (albeit in a silly way)

Anyway, these were some example ideas that I came up with. I'm sure the devs could make better perks, if they wanted to give Wonkey them. And if Klei does decide to, then I urge them to follow through with my idea of the curse branch.

I feel as though followers is kind of a boring route to take, i'd rather they focus on sailing-related stuff. We already have so many follower characters, with wicker and wormwood being (relatively in the case of wicker) recently added to this pile.

Won't happen but I think Wonkey and the curse mechanic should be completely and utterly removed. To me it is pointless, unnecessary and provides nothing whatsoever. The pirate raids in of themselves are punishing enough. We could have more raids (bit more balanced though.. too many monkeys for solo) all over the ocean and it wouldn't be semi forgotten content that the vast majority of players simply turn off if not for the curse.

Possibly my least liked aspect/mechanic of the entire game.

Sorry to bump this thread after a week, but I don't wanna make a whole new thread about Wonkey. I'm seeing a lot of people who commented either don't like the implementation of the Moon Quay or find Wonkey just uninteresting. The point of skill trees seem to be making characters more fun and interesting to play, so Wonkey could definitely benefit from one.

It would just be odd to implement if they want to keep Wonkey from being chosen at the start for whatever reason. Maybe have all other perks locked behind one perk called "Embracing the Moon Quay's Gift" or something which makes you a permanent Wonkey, and must be activated in order to choose them at the portal.

This would mean you need to be cursed in a normal way long enough to get insight. From there you can have:

  • Sailing branch: ability to craft bandana and wooden sword, ability to craft battle paddle and prime mate hat, more efficiency with boating equipment, etc.
  • Primate branch: ability to throw poop, decrease the time it takes to run in tiers, the last being near instant, etc.
  • Curse branch: making wonkey not auto pick up trinkets, being able to be handed trinkets by other players and turn them into just rope at the cost of sanity, general team based perks so it's not super annoying to fight powder monkeys if you have a Wonkey on your team
  • Shadow affinity: able to recruit splumonkeys for one banana each. Will follow you and fight for you, can have up to 4.
  • Lunar affinity: can give a banana to the Unnatural Portal to spawn a pirate powder monkey follower. They are generally weaker than splumonkeys in combat, but offer more utility. If you are on a boat with no sails but a steering wheel, they will paddle in the direction that you steer the boat, being faster than sails and far quicker to adjust direction. Getting off the wheel will make them paddle in whatever direction opposes current direction to make the boat stop nearly instantly. They will not assist you in paddling without a steering wheel so you can still travel slowly and carefully when approaching land. They can also fight but only do the damage of a wooden sword so it's not great. (I think it would be fun to get a pirate raid while you have your own little gang of pirate monkeys so you can battle on the seas). It goes without saying but they do not drop a trinket on death. Can have up to 4
