Oompitie
Hi this a thing I have been wondering since I first played dst. I want to make a mega base eventually in my world but I don’t like cheating in games. The reason why I ask this is because of the fact that thing don’t smoulder in the oasis and because summer is about trying to conquer the heat burning your things. So I’m just wondering is basing in the oasis cheating? BezKa
It's not. It's a game mechanic, things don't smoulder under giant trees either. There's also some huge disadvantages in exchange for the wildfire immunity- you have to either have a beefalo or a special hat to not get a massive speed penalty. CameoAppearance
It's not cheating, it's an intended mechanic. You're giving up the advantages of basing anywhere else (for example, proximity to the lunar island, a cave entrance close to the ruins, the moonstone, the Pig King, really any other desirable locations that happen to generate far from the oasis and can't be moved) for the advantage of no wildfires, plus as BezKa said it's not consequence-free. Set up lightning conductors all over the map so lightning bolts are contained? Not to mention the other parts of the game that are EQUALLY as Destructive such as Fire Hounds showing up during Hound Waves, or.. as someone who has NEVER Fought or Appeased Ant-Lion (as I suspect that most noob players can’t do..) I can say with absolute certainty that having Ant-Lion Craters breaking under your feet is equally as destructive as Wildfires. Another thing a lot of people might not be aware of is that Ant-Lion starts with just 2 crater attacks but the longer your game goes on.. it increases its attacks to 5-7.. that is 7 (seemingly random) sinkhole collapses right underneath your feet. My point? DST is a game that is Intentionally designed to be destructive… and Wildfires are no different from the above examples in terms of world destruction capabilities. If the game did not want you to be able to build a base in a certain area, Klei would have designed it so you can’t place any items in the Area… just like how if you want to play the Pig Kings Mini-Game by trading him a Championship Belt, You need to first clear the area around him of any built obstacles. So TL:DR- No OP Basing in the Oasis is not cheating, but there’s also more than one way to counter Wildfires. DST is a game that is Intentionally designed to be destructive… and Wildfires are no different from the above examples in terms of world destruction capabilities. !t is very hard to make items that save the wildfires. It's very hard to control and save items. With lightning, it is absolutely not that terrible. For one, Spring has rain, relatively inexpensive defense from lighning so the fire wont spread well. Yes, antlions craters are equally(maybe less though) as destructive however it is FAR more easier to repair items broken by antlion craters than burned items. You can for one literally just move away (there is plenty of hint given) or repair your broken chests or items with the 50% return it is not very difficult With hounds, it is very simple to just move away from the area where the hounds are or set up a clearing in some place ( hounds trap is very good) and your base will be 100% safe frome those pesky hounds With wildfires, not only are they sporadic, their defense isnt cheaply crafted either, which is advantages that prior had. that and its spreading tendencies make this by far the most destructive mechanic. Well, you may say that you can just go in the caves and avoid that but i dont want to sacrifice my large amount of time that i could dedicate to killing many surface bosses, doing quests and building just besause of this one mechanic. And if you think that this just adds to the 'uncompromising nature' of the game, i believe on the contrary that it just makes the game far too annoying. There is nothing you can do skill-wise to stop these besides spamming flingos (which tbh gears are a limited material) where as with things that are annoying such as death they can be alleviated through means such as revival, which is very easy to access. And, through playing the game more, you grasp an understanding of it and can begin to learn from mistakes / watch a guide. In conclusion, Summer is already fairly tough with its preexisting mechanics, but this just adds another layer of difficulty that isnt necessarily needed nor helps the game in becoming any better of an experience. It only helps it to be annoying which is not a desired mechanic. but if you're the insane guy that loves wildfires i will not stop you, this is just my opinion and reasoning behind this choice Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/144192-is-basing-in-the-oasis-cheating/#findComment-1605457 Share on other sites

Notecja
Oasis is just boring, also I dislike the limitations of speed during sandstorm. Once I was basing in Oasis with uneven edges and worldgen, so there were spots where sandstorm was suddenly gone or just weaker - and standing in these spots was same dangerous as basing everywhere else but with disadvantage getting stuck in sandstorm on next tile. Tall trees need water, drop stuff on the ground when hit with lighting and have fig vines which I feel bad removing. But it's mostly the water that limits their use, but I do have a beebox space that is fully protected by trees and I love it. Flingos need refueling, cost gears (not that I care but it's something to keep in mind) and take up much more space. Their reach is also way smaller than rods lighting protection, so you need more. Supervising them is really annoying for me. Fire pumps are manual, so I'd have to drop everything I'm doing and run on a boat to use one. Also requires water and a boat, and has even smaller range. I actually don't base in the oasis all that much. I just carry a luxury fan with me, if I don't have a fan, I take a watering can. The only real problem with wildfires is that they can happen when you can't react, for example when leaving an area. If smoldering happens when I'm close I have about 10 ways to deal with it. When it happens just as I'm leaving, I can't do much can I? Once I figure out the whole modding thing, first thing I'm doing is characters announcing they can hear/smell/see/feel something burning whenever there's a wildfire starting somewhere nearby. cybers2001
You can't compare lightning rods to flingos, not even close. Lightning rods are much cheaper to make, are maintenance free, are always active, and (I believe), have a larger radius of protection. Antlion craters are also easy to deal with. You get a warning before it happens, so you can just run off to a clear spot to minimize damage. Wildfires give no real warning aside from a smoldering effect that can easily be overlooked. Frosty_Mentos
There's no cheating in this game unless you're using the console for spawning or w/e. There's really no rules for how you should play the game or how it's supposed to be played, it's got the tools and characters to figure out your own playstyle. There are better ways to improve willow's fire perks I remember losing all the grass from a pig guard set piece (which was in the oasis dessert but in that patch of land the sandstorm doesnt occur for some reason) because i crossed that area with a beefalo. There were no way to know that the grass was starting to smoulder before i unloaded the area. The other solution was being afk to wait the evening (which is so short) but that is the opposite of having fun Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/144192-is-basing-in-the-oasis-cheating/#findComment-1605541 Share on other sites
Intrepidpioneer
Living in oasis protects from wildfire but you can also turn wildfires off completely in the world specs so you don't have to base there just for that. And even without those, you can just catch them while they're still smoldering and extinguish them with your hands. Three health is an easy price to pay for preventing a forest fire or your entire base burning down. I always carry one of the above items during summer but I rarely ever need them to prevent fires when I can just be attentive and sacrifice a miniscule amount amount of health. 19 hours ago, BezKa said: Once I figure out the whole modding thing, first thing I'm doing is characters announcing they can hear/smell/see/feel something burning whenever there's a wildfire starting somewhere nearby.
