Pirate Raids are Too Rare Now

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, with the new raid chance and timer changes pirate raid's frequencies have been lesser! Which sounds great! I once got like 6-9 raids in a single day which was just ridiculous.

Buuut now I'm experiencing the opposite end of ridiculous, and have gotten no raids past a 275 day world, and feel too rare now. Even with full scaling they just feel too rare which is a shame, you can see a snippet of the chance/timers for raids from @Scypham post here:

Quote

TLDR:
After day 81 (you get 4-5 Powder Monkeys by now alongside the fastest time):
Within 75 tiles of the Monkey Queen: 20% chance every 1.25-6.25 minutes to get a raid.
Within 150 tiles: 10% chance every 2.5-12.5 minutes to get a raid.
Within 200 tiles: 10% chance every 5-25 minutes to get a raid.

Not only do I miss the challenge of dealing with this guys every now and then, it's quite abysmal to try and get your stolen items back without tediously searching all over the main land without help of the map. Resources and items like black flag's, battle paddles, and tricorns have become very annoying to try and get. I just wanna get Polly Rogers! The game has indirectly become 'easier' (challenge of raids are less frequent  to the point of feeling like they don't even exist) and 'harder' (Pirate Stashes are much more tedious to try and locate without the use of a map from the Prime Mate) in all the wrong ways.

How should this be fixed? Well, I'll leave it up to Klei, but some ideas have been shared by some friends like:

  • Increase the timer for raids by a large amount, but make it guranteed instead of chance based
  • Allow items like Beefalo Horns and Flares to force a pirate raid, as if they found your location.

Agreed the way the update changed raids has pretty much just killed raids for me it's not fun hugging monkey island in the hopes I'll get a raid before I starve to death I legit fell asleep waiting for a raid to hit me one of the times it took so long maybe rng just hates me but it's not fun as is they're not a spice of chaos added to the sea like they began they're a rare sight you'll probably never see add to this there seems to be some kind of bug that sometimes makes them flee from you the moment they spot you. All this to more or less say my original fears of the pirates raids being butchered came to pass I guess.

Edit: one of the things I was so excited to add to my routine when the update dropped was rushing polly rogers but now it's just not worth it so when I play alone I just console command spawn it in or ignore it entirely as it's painful....

I really don’t understand why this wasn’t the case from the start. Periodic attack mechanics are already pretty hit or miss given the time between waves can greatly vary if you are or are not unlucky with the timer cooldown, and it really doesn’t help when it’s chance based if you get the attack or not…

I feel the timers/chances are sufficient if your luck was perfectly average and you hit the mark every single time, but as that won’t realistically happen it feels raids can greatly vary. I do feel increasing the time they take to come by ~4-5X but forcing them to arrive once the timer expires would be the easiest way of adjusting it.

In addition, what if the raid chances increased with the amount of booty you have on your ship? like 0 structures = 20%, to 4+ structures being 50%.

i don't know if is alreadt a thing but having chests filled with stuff should increase the chances of getting a raid

let the pirate raids as it is now that you guys make klei change once, it is actually good having more time ralaxing in the ocean than fighting.

I feel like the biggest problem pirate raids have is that they only happen when your headed towards the island of Moon Quay- like I genuinely don’t understand why this is designed in this way..

Why do they have RNG odds of spawning when entering their territory? I’m sure the RNG odds would make much better sense and be more reasonable if pirate raids took place over the entire ocean (maybe make them too afraid to sail into dangerous points of interest such as a boss fight)

I just hate the slow slog of sail/ repeatedly tap B to row a paddle with timing it & pirate raids would’ve been a good way to keep the sea a little more exciting.

Was just talking about how badly I wanted this.

I do agree, I think they're a little too rare now. We've got a handful of ways to deal with them which I love though now I'm hardly getting raided at all!

C'mon, mama wants to see what this shiny new cannon can do!!

What about people who don't play ocean content to be safe?

Pirate raids were awesome. It's okay for some things to be hard or challenging even for well-prepared players, and it's okay to not always be rewarded for surviving.

Some people found them annoying or tedious but, honestly, I'm tired of being in control of every situation unless I choose to challenge myself by mods or personal playstyles (no offense to Klei). I personally don't like the idea of being able to summon/signal them because then the mechanic just becomes a farmable pastime instead of an obstacle that doesn't always reward you. I definitely wouldn't hate seeing them more often.

I'd rather something be "Infamous" than "Ignore-able".

totally agree and more taking in count that we can revive easily. Is boring having such safety in a game that is suppose to have perma death but you only die against optional dangers and revive by a cheap price

Yea here's hoping this update left me feeling bitter about what was a extremely exciting update for me if nothing else here's hoping someone releases a mod to revert the raids to what they were because at this point I not to hopeful about future content if this will be how it's handled...

I agree, and I hope it's not the option Klei takes, or at the least, they don't just do that and call it a day for pirate raids.

I dunno I'm just bummed honestly. I was so excited for pirate raids and all I saw were posts about how annoying they were, and they got toned down. Then I see posts about people wanting to farm them for loot. I guess I feel like the experience itself is the reward, not necessarily the loot. I don't blame anyone though, it is what it is.

i have all the ocean content except ck near the monkey island, if i dont experience enough raids (currently 0 since the update hit the live version...) i will end up turning them "more" in the settings. Same will happen with hound waves since now there are years where i dont get any or just 1 wave...

is sad cuz is a survival game, these settings should be used by the animal crossing gang isntead of being the only way to have a thread in the game

Yea that's very fair, I am a little bummed about it too. I was one of the advocates for toning them down but I just asked for it to not be ridiculous to the point of y'know, 5+ raids in a single day haha. Even with the ridiculous and pain I suffered I still had fun. I'm sure we can reach a good middle ground between 5 raids in a single day and no raids after 270+ days, lol, lots of room to balance and tinker stuff out, just gotta give it some time and let Klei know the things we want to see changed.

Not a big fan of how some on the forums judge on people that demanded to nerf the raids (and a variety of things around it) and now would like some buffs like if they don't know what they ask for. The obvious reality is that it takes a little more than two changes to have something ideal sometimes, and from the general feedback it's far from making everyone happy on both the frequency and the challenge, the two things have been tuned rather unaccordingly at the same to make the whole thing less amusing. So fixes would be needed, and I'd welcome alternative methods to play around it too.

For me it's off in the corner by itself so I have to go out of my way to go there which makes it feel even worse I just decided live is to precious to wait for something to happen for 30+ minutes.

This goes both ways people are and were getting mocked for the opposite and I even got crap for recommending alternatives to dealing with raids and talking about people intentionally misrepresenting content.

I played in the beta and the raids were definitely happening way too often.

Klei made a change when the update went live and now they definitely became too rare.

What's wrong with trying to find a good balance to how often raids occur?

I don't get it since Hornet has been testing this stuff too with their friends during the beta and has been giving appropriate feedback this whole time.
