Gestalt

Recommended Posts

no idea if someone mentioned this but Gestalt is a german word. it means a scary unknown shape. like when you see something in the dark and you see only the shape of it and you are scared and you dont know if its a person or demon or the devil or what ever. then you say: i saw a gestalt there in the corner

It translates to a number of things, actually.

That's one of it, but there's a few more, now, sorry but I can't recall which languages these belonged to, but other names were: "Knowing figure" and "Living Being".

There might be more, who knows?

maybe a hint could be that in german you write noun with the first letter big. like in german its Gestalt and in eglish it would be gestalt. so if a charachter says in qoutes soemthing like: "its a Gestalt" then its very likely the german word

That makes much more sense than what some people were linking it to.

Gestalt experimental psychology.

The phrase I originally quoted in relation to Gestalt psychology was apparently an incorrect translation (an organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts). It should read "the whole is something else than the sum of its parts". Nevertheless, it is basically about how many things are perceived as something else as a whole. Kinda like Wickerbottom's Gestalt quote: "They are the projections of something stronger."

Basically, Gestalts could be referencing both the German translation (they are creepy shapes) and the philosophy (they are numerous, but represent a whole).

Here are all the characters' quotes for Gestalt for reference:

Spoiler

Wilson: "They're promising me... knowledge."

Willow: "It feels like they're speaking inside my head!"

Wolfgang: "Wolfgang's brainmeats have never been so mighty!"

Wendy: "I can feel their fear and loneliness."

WX-78: "THE MOON HAS FINALLY COME FOR ME"

Wickerbottom: "They are the projections of something stronger."

Woodie: "We're all connected, eh?"

Maxwell: "It communes with us through them."

Wigfrid: "Goddess of the moon, shine thy smile upon me!"

Webber: "They want to talk, but they don't know how!"

Winona: "I feel like... they've seen my sister."

Wortox: "Good evening, children!"

Nah, it's not. English is the language used in game, so this word could (not likely) have some German origins but now it's just a name for these beings.

I think the other theory is more likely to be true: there is a thing called Gestalt Consciousness that is, simply speaking, a hive mind (example - Stellaris):

actually if you would draw a Gestalt then it would be something like the dst gestalts. also how they hit you would be exactly like a gestalt hits you. its something you dont see and you dont know whats going on. and its not a ghost. its a gestalt...

when i saw ingame thees things were called gestalt i had immidiatly no doubt they mean the german word

here some pics of "Gestalt"

the last pics says ghost but its cause a ghost is also a Gestalt. but a Gestalt isnt a ghost.

i think its like bluegeits and the other says its not a reference to one thing. its a mix

They are a lot more like ghosts than like the gestalt of gestalt therapy, which makes the name less mysterious. But it is still weird, because most DS names are in English and the references are pretty easy for an reasonably educated person to get, like the pig quotes in Hamlet taken from Shakespeare plays.

tbh, I don’t usually care that much about lore, but I would really like to know the reasons for choosing this name.

Well English is nicked from literally every other language, I can't see why one more can't hurt. :wilson_ecstatic:

@BeliarBAD already explained this very well with pictures.  Gestalt also has a phylosophical meaning. However it's about a century when I had philosophy classes. If you ask me the Gestalt mob are similar to a moving Rohrschach test. That could explain why everyone look at these different. Another cool link to Gestalt would be the Gestaltenwandler - vampires and werewolves fit in this category. Maybe Gestalten express themself through shapes. It wouldn't be surprising if Wes would be the first of the survivors to understand and able to communitcate with moon aliens. :D

Yes I know they moon structure speak to us but maybe it's a fun theory.

...except they all look the same, and every character points out that either they're trying to communicate with them, or that they're a part of something else.

It already is a word in English, just not with a meaning that has anything to do with ghosts or the supernatural.

hmm i just read the wiki for gestaltenwandler and it says they choose different forms. in some forms they cant talk cause they arent human in this form. so it would fit if they could only come in the dst world in this form but they cant communicate to us.

Maybe the triumphant skins and NPC maxwell should be named these?

Yes!! I was thinking the same thing! Thanks for the Gestalt pic, there really is a resemblance with the Moon Rock Idol!

Also, I was looking in the code, and saw the word "Brightmare" in relation to the Gestalt. Thought that was interesting.

Curiously, the moon is associated to children from unknown origin, playing a role a good or evil beings.

Examples:

-In some places, like Afrika, there's legends about a future child with the powers of a god moon (Mawu).

-Or tales, like The Bamboo Cutter (know as Tale of the Princess Kaguya too) in Japan:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_the_Bamboo_Cutter

-Novels too, like Moonchild, written in 1917 and published around 1920, by Aleister Crowley:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonchild_(novel)

(Note: the being of the novel is from ethereal origin, resembling in some way to this "Gestalt")
