In This Topic: We speculate what the new biomes will be.

Recommended Posts

I can't bring myself to continue my current colony now that I know there will be three (3!) new biomes added to the game when it launches in late May.  So to pass the time, I thought we'd speculate on the nature of the new biomes...what flora and fauna they might include, what new function any new materials (if any) might fill, any environmental hazards, or anything else you want to speculate on.

I'll get the ball rolling.

New Biome #1 - Desert Biome

This biome will have tonnes of sand, some sandstone, some copper, and maybe some fossils.  It will be a fairly hot biome.  Pincha Peppers and Jumping Joyas will grow here, and a new breed of Shove Vole will spend its days burrowing through the sand.

New Biome #2 - Ocean Biome

This new biome will be flooded with of salt water.  Salt water itself will be of limited use, but it can be distilled in a new distiller that produces water and salt, a new ingredient used to make high end foods and never-spoiling, low-quality jerky.  There will be a few new fish species in this biome, some coral, and a new seaweed-like plant that can be used to make sushi.  To help our dupes explore this new biome a diver's suit will be made available at the Textile Loom.  This will allow our duplicants to dive deeper and protect them from hypothermia and heat exhaustion caused by water temperature.

New Biome #3 - Nuclear Biome

Radium will finally be added to the game in this biome, which will also contain plenty of lead.  These materials will be used to power a nuclear reactor and to build radiation-shielding lead tiles, respectively.  Radiation will be a new germ for now, but in a future DLC it will be reworked as a mechanic, complete with its own overlay.

Those three admittedly unimaginative biomes were the best I could come up with.  What about you?

I can imagine a large water biome with a ton of sedimantary rock and some new aquatic critters and plants. Maybe some seaweed passively cleaning water or coral plants slowly creating lime. And a squid critter feeding off of them.

Maybe a rock biome with a lot of open spaces for some flying critters. Like a flyer with nice decor and a morale effect but a nasty habit to do a lot of noise waking up dupes that are sleeping at the moment. The biome could also contain some radium and pyrite.

A trash biome, home of the morb (lets be honest it never fit the caustic biome). Filled with polluted oxygen, dirt and organic waste (maybe some sort of plant that grows on waste, useful for medicine). Germs of all sorts everywhere in this biome.

#1 The plastic biome: Made from plastic, it's fantastic!

#2 The more bio than slime biome: Lots of dirt, fertilizer and germs and organic waste. Also known as the "****!" biome.

#3 Definitely Nuclear. Can spontaneously go critical. Also Known as the "Oh ****!" biome.

An artificial biome is a possibility as well. Minable plastic and refined metal. More lore buildings, some crushed by rock into a plastic/metal mix. It would make sense to add it at release to avoid spoiling the story early. Thinking of it like the area around the wooden thing in Don`t Starve.

The Crystal Biome - Dirt, sedimentary rocks, stone hatchling and sandworm, Crystal plants, that gives sedimentary rock on harvest and drinks water and light.

Gas grass biome - full of the critter and the plant found in space, natural gas in the air, and some co2 too, morbs also live there.

Dragon Biome - Dragon eats stone, magma and poops igneous rock and natural gas, fiery trees all around

90's pop was so bad.

A plastic biome with plastic slimes could be fun, and they like to swim in petrol or oil maybe, or even transforms chlorine into plastic..

can I ask for biomes fix b4 adding new stuff?(POI override stuff, some map only 1 oil well ,broken biomes you need to save asap etc)

biomes
ENEMY biomes,critter that hurt you
blueprint biomes:get the ability to build rebuild POI without debug(need some balance change etc)
Mines biomes:you can dig coal/gold or other mines from the biomes if you can maintain the biomes stable(like ice biomes that melt, mayb you need to keep bump O2 inside and remove some wasted products from the mining

PoIs overriding each other is definitely a problem.

PoIs breaking biome borders is not a problem.

Oil Reservoirs should definitely be normalized, rather than randomized between 1 and 3

Broken Biomes are not a problem.  There will always be some that are intact.

Imagination, Life is your creation.

Having said that, i believe that one biome wont necessarily be what we expect a biome to be. Something like a ruins biome or a precursor-base.

But i'd be happy to be wrong in this case.;)

90's pop was amazing. Especially Aqua's seminal social commentary on a world descending into a surrogate state where we question even fundamental things as actual experts on subjects and the integrity of news media. The shallow and morally corrupt world they described is the present where millions follow every word of people with no qualifications like the Kardashians, and people can shoot to notoriety by having a youtube channel with no content of any value.

"Life in plastic. It's fantastic."

Indeed!

If we get an ocean biome with seaweed and I can’t make shushi I’ma be pisssssssed!

Mines would be cool, similar to the oil well spots :). Enemy critters i also recommended into another post like the kabutops pokemon would be cool too.

Coal lands - coal plants, spider that eat coal and poop co2 and makes webbs between 2 plants or narrow spots, that can be harvest for reed fiber or silk.

Diamond lands - Diamond volcano, stalagmites and turtles, a larvae, cocoon and buterfly, all eats diamond, turtles poo refined carbon and the butterfly/ larvaes uses flowers and plants that lives there.

Deactivated plants - Robotic biome from the previous base encountered there, some robots that can be reactivated, fed energy and some metals, behave as critters and sweep the surrounding areas always and drop thing to the closest storage. Blue prints can be finded here for anti meteor weapons, automated defense systems for hostile critters and monsters.

The jungle - Dinosaurs can be found here, all hostile, but if you incubate their eggs the babys can bee groomed and tamed, raptors can be rided and more fossils and secret eggs can be dug out of the " broken " tiles. If you revive the fossils " pokemon like " you get new dinos. Alossauros and White raptor, the raptor full docile the alo full aggro but good source of food, only eats meat.

The fear biome - Plants that spills acid when aproached, venom worms all around digging like voles, polluted oxygen everywhere, and critters that are docile but if you try to grabb them they will fight you and drop something. A lizard that drops its tail for 500g meat when scaried by something.

If one of the three is an improved magma biome, I sure will be mad.

On the other hand, if none of the three is but it is additionally made into a proper one, I sure will be mad too, though in a positive way .

As much as I want to agree, I actually think the magma biome is best left as is.  If it becomes a fully-fledged biome then we're going to need a reason to explore/exploit it and a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief as our dupes wade through lava with nothing to protect them but their trusty copper exosuits.

Exosuits get destroyed by direct contact with lava though (after a short time).  They melt in to sand then the dupe dies.

IIRC, people looked through unused files and saw a boar-like creature, and a palm tree plant thingy. There's a good chance they will be used for the new biomes.

That would be the volgus and the palmera tree.

20170612191959_1.jpg.e67dce7753d7bbe8916

A skittish mammalian creature. It moves in herds for safety.

5b352d88a1ff1_PalmeraTree.png.7bd5e6ce5d

A large, chlorine-dwelling plant that can be domestically grown with Planter Boxes. Palmeras grow inedible buds that emit toxic hydrogen gas.

I hope we see both, but I'm not sure the palmera tree (at least how it was originally conceived) fills a role in the asteroid's ecosystem.  It's supposed to sit in chlorine and produce hydrogen, indicating it was going to be placed in the caustic biome.  Given how crowded that biome has now become (with dreckos, balm lilies, and the new decorative plants), and accounting for the addition of geysers that can produce hydrogen, I don't know that it's needed.  Still, I would love to see it and the volgus (and shockworm!) make the cut.

I mostly agree with this except where magma biome is concerned.  Having your oil biome exposed to all that heat can wreck it.  I haven't had it for a while, but I think it can happen.  I would also prefer the oil biome not be in thermal contact with cold biomes.

Perhaps the abyssalite could be put in after POIs and just bury the buildings or volcanoes and not overwrite neutronium?

I'm hoping the Magma Biome does get reworked, but separately from the 3 biomes that we have been told are coming.  There's just a huge amount of space down there below the Oil Biome that is wasted.  You usually can't even access ~50% of the Magma that is down there in the pockets of Neutronium.  I'd rather see it streamlined into a "Magma sea", which produces Magma up to a certain pressure continuously.  Add a double thickness layer of Abyssallite for safety if necessary, to protect the Oil Biome.  Add some more Diamond formations or something down there for flavor.

The problem with that is a lot of the Ruins objects are made from Neutronium.  So you'd fill the PoI's "free" space, and overwrite objects like Vascillators and AETNs, but not Computer Desks, Vending Machines, etc.
