Really annoyed at hound attack...

Recommended Posts

many ways to deal with hounds:

- Use Pigs. Pigs will attack hounds on sight.

- Go to the Beefalos and run around and through the herd to transfer the aggro to the Beefalos

- U can make spiders to attack the hounds too.. Just make sure u have armor and don't attack the spiders... just run through the spider web to spawn them and keep on running.

- take them to a lure plant and run around the plant close enough to not get hit but enough to lure the hounds to the eyes

- learn how to kite them... 2 attack dodge (u can use roads to take advantage of extra speed)

- Use tooth traps (this is more of like a mid game thing)

- combine panflute to put them to sleep and kill them individually

those are some of the ways u can deal with them. U really don't need mods here tbh, just a bit of practice :)

Well, I was gonna say just turn them down to less in world settings, but... you're having problems with just 2?  That won't be enough.

Wear armor.  Learn to dodge attacks.  And as minespatch said, lead hounds to beefalo.  Don't walk near the beefalo if they have red butts, go around instead and let the hounds make the mistake of approaching the beefalo when they try to cut corners.  As for the tentacle suggestion... wear armor if you try that.

I think hound attacks should just be set to less anyway. If they successfully get past 100 days with Hounds on default then they'll know what annoying is.

I disagree, Hounds are made with the purpose of being a warning to the players to take cautions while they survive and learn in the game.

I think they just add unnecessary repetitiveness to an already repetition heavy game. There's plenty of other mechanics that teach players the same thing without disrupting gameplay every 30 minutes.

The Constant is a hostile world sometimes, and Hounds just make his job.

True, and that's good. But the default mode deserves his respect too.

Of course it does. I'm just saying that if he already isn't a fan of hound waves then there's no shame in setting it to less. He shouldn't totally turn it off, but it also doesn't need to be the focus of his time spent playing.

I understand, it's a good suggestion.

The first rule and hard lesson DST taught me is to never face anything without armor: even a grass suit makes a huge difference. Armor is essential, specially in the early days when you are still getting a hang of the game.

Webber makes the early hound waves easier, establish yourself near spider dens and when you hear the hounds just stay among the dens, the more and higher tier the better.

Hounds will be slowed down by the stickiness and you wont, allowing you to have a running advantage, and the spiders will aggro the unfortunate doggies and will take care of them for you. You can mostly do this for free up until the first summer, when fire hounds will burn your dens (if you are unprepared for the fire that is).

The other options greatly explained above by the fellow forumers also work, this option im offering was the way I slowly learned to survive the hound waves.

No one's suggested a tooth trap field, so I'll drop that in here. If you're having trouble with just 2 then go to beefalo and let them take care of it. Make some tooth traps though, seriously, they're very good.

Instead of circumventing the problem why not look for a solution on how do safely defeat them? Sine you said you have problems with just 2 shouldn't be that hard. The trick is to finish them off one by one as soon as one spawns, else if they get to make a group will be harder and harder as world progresses so if you didn't get to master ways to defeat them then use a field of tooth traps like suggested above a few times.

I'm pretty critical of summer smolder and hound attacks.  I still play the game with the default settings - but I wouldn't fault anyone for simply turning these features off.  Hound attacks start out okay but after 100 days or so they get pretty obnoxious.  Its not about difficulty as much as it creates a tedious time management mini-game based on constant assaults.  I want to do Bee Queen - okay, wait for a hound attack first, then run to bee queen.  It just gets in the way of the game.

I think the caves have it right.  The mob that attacks is dangerous but can be managed without needing to set up multiple defense death traps across the world, and the rate of assault is low enough that when one happens you're actually a bit surprised and have the added challenge of depth worms on top of whatever you were doing.  I never have "hounds +" anything on the surface.  Its "wait for hounds then..."  Not as fun really :\

Same thing with summer smolder.  Its like "build flingos everywhere" or go to oasis / caves where you just don't deal with them :\

If Klei ever makes another major overhaul to the game (new content, character balance, ect) they should include season re-balance and the hound attacks in the to-do list.  Remake them into something more engaging that you experience with other elements of the game rather than oppressive elements that lead you to completely avoid them.  Maybe go the way of the AntLion where you are given the challenge, and a few ways to deal with it.  You can accept the danger and avoid rock falls / sinkholes, or eliminate them by giving tributes to appease him, or kill him.  So maybe if you hunt / kill Varg you will not get hound attacks for the next 20 days, and summer smolder only exists while DFly is alive?  idk
