Well, we had some more adventures over on Winona's world, "Terrarforming"...

Well, I've now been on both sailable oceans in the DS franchise in their winter/winter-equivalent seasons...

...and I think the Shipwrecked one is prettier, but the DST one definitely looks COLDER.

Anyhoo.

Dude seriously look how in the middle of nowhere we are.  Yes, I get it, Ticoon:  south.  I'm southing as hard as I can!
(Yes it's Day 26 and I haven't explored the whole landmass yet.  It's a Huge world and it took me a long time to find _any_ gold and get started building anything!)

So here we are, on the Moon Island.  Winona went loony...and I think I must've too because I CLICKED THE WRONG BUTTON AND ABANDONED THE MOONCAT.    At least, I THINK that's what happened--it didn't follow me onto the boat.  I didn't even take a screenshot, 'cos I was waiting for daylight so it could be seen better!  ARTEMIS, NOOOO.

...well, that's one way to get weird purple lighting, I guess.

...other than almost dying of heatstroke at night in the Cherry Forest while holding a modded cursed lighter, of course.  #relateable

So...fine, there's still a few more kitkats I haven't found.  I hired another Ticoon...

...this. (In case you can't read it, it's "Sunuvabirch".  That's with an r, not a t...!)  No, I did not name him that because I was bitter about losing the other kitty; I had that dumb pun in mind for a birchforest kit for a while now.  : P

Recently, I had a rather fun bug where, after after accidently drowning wormwood he... became wes? It was both very funny and somewhat terrifying 

He just stopped talking and would only do miming animations. I guess falling into the ocean was really traumatic for him.

(the Catcoon Shrine is right there because I got sick of the Ticoons always dying on the way to what seemed to be somewhere in this forest, so I just made a shrine IN the same forest.)

Two of Wendy's cats (Fade and Tethrathoth) go bugnuts at the same time, while Abigail photobombs me.  : P

Where Did Wendy Go?  With trees this big, you can completely disappear, from the right angle...although, my henchbeings there are kinda giving me away. XD
(and yes, this is a mod.  It's called something like..."Evergreens 2Gether"?  Very old mod that somehow still works (as of late February 2022, anyway).  There's a complementary one called "Big Birchnuts Together".  One of them also affects twiggy trees.)

Ohmygod.  It's the Cat Army.  RUN!
(Names:  The regular kittykit is Charmander, then Li'l Sahara (desert kit), Bayou (swamp cat), Torch Lily (meadow cat) and Wildfire (savannah cat.  Because wildfires are a BIG deal on prairies.) And then also Chester, of course.)

But enough of that with the older worlds I already had established--during this event, a magical thing happened.  I finally got enough spools to weave...

She's a complicated character whose threads about her I TOTALLY wasn't paying attention to when she first came out, so I don't expect to last very long.  So I decided to snap the beginning of her first adventure for posterity.  : P

(Don't worry, I didn't actually touch the Terrarium.  Why?  Inventory space woes!  : P But that's okay, because having a giant eyeball floating after me before I have the means to make any better combat equipment than a grass suit and an axe wouldn't've been the world's best idea.  But it's on my map now, at least.  For later.)

Of COURSE I found a kitty before I even found a place to camp.  Don't even trip.  It's me we're talking about here. : P
(Either that, or that plant has ears and a tail....which over in Oxygen Not Included might actually be true.  Hi, Pips!)

We end on a nice quiet picture of Wanda and...I'm probably gonna call him "Merlin", because of that one version of Merlin who ages backwards?  All her cats are gonna have time-weirdness-character names.

(Not like me... they frequently end with rude names, latest kitcoon I named Cutlet - Kotlet for polish, as "kot" means "cat"...)

Aww, thanks!  Although...I'm not immune to the "rude names" thing either--I do literally have a kitcoon named "Sunuvabirch."
(for non-native English speakers, that's "Son of a BiRch", spelled funny on purpose and rammed together into one word.)

But I kinda always grew up with the idea that cat names were best when a bit...fancy or eccentric. Name them after a favourite song, or a character you like who has an unusual-sounding name, or maybe a mythology reference, or the foreign version of an ordinary word that's just to describe them (so for example, a black cat in an English-speaking household might be named "Noir" instead of just "Black", 'cos French = fancier)  Names that could be totally mistaken for an ordinary, real-life, human name probably shouldn't be used either, I think.  Don't name your cat "Bob".  Name him "Mr. Fluffypants, Destroyer of Worlds."

In PRACTICE, most cats have an "actual" normal name, but in day-to-day situations they tend to be called things like "What are you DOING, you little weirdo?"  "No!  No biting!" and "Hey there, bugnut!"  For example, my own real-life cat is named Horatio, after Horatio Hornblower, the book character...but in REALITY his name is more often "STOP that!"  : P

 

(and in game, I DID semi-_officially_ name one of my cats "Fluffbutt", by means of a sign.  : P)

You know...it occured to me, that I might have enough pictures of the Cherry Forest in enough different stages of its development, to do kind of a retrospective?  Maybe not EVERY step along the way, but...I'm'a look through what I have here and see.

(why am I doing this?  I dunno, I noticed how VERY different the mod is now compared to when it started, and thought it might be fun to look at the changes.  Also I'm putting this in a spoiler, because WAY TOO MANY PICTURES.)

The very first one of it I took, and I think this is like, within a couple of days after it released on Steam.  Maybe like THE day, I'm not sure. it was really close.  Back then, the trees looked the same all year and were all the same size, you had to chop the tree down to get the cherry, there were no other details such as floating cherry petals in the air or new birds/insects/flowers yet, the ground looked different and petal-clumps could stick out onto the ocean.  : P

One of my Steam friends called this "My Neighbor Catcoon", and that's been its name ever since.

The trees stilllook the same, but they might've been changing size by this point--I dunno if they dropped their everything for winter yet, though.  Notice that there are definitely some new creatures and details, and giant floating cherry petals.

The "arbor" area over at Walani's "March of Civilization" base, in all four seasons.  This took place at least partly during the Year of the Varg, if you want to know the time period.  (I am proud to say:  This never burned down.  It was a GLITCH that ended this run!)

The Cherrylings have definitely changed their art style over time.

I still think this looks like an illustration from a children's book.  (Well, maybe minus the goop.)

This is back when you had to chop down the tree to get the cherry...and then as revenge, it could freaking TROLL you!  XD

Apparently penguin ice-hotels and cherry trees could (can?) coexist.  Huh.

Notice the petals have definitely turned lighter and have different outlines now--and also--the trees themselves have growth stages! 

Nice Mr. Cherry keeps a light on me all through Winter's Feast Eve.    (Notice the wings are now petals instead of leaves.)

...well THAT didn't go well.  (from 2019, I believe)  I love how they're SO black they look like...voids, into another reality...

Double cherries!  We didn't have those before.  (Actually where I live, sometimes we have like, _conjoined_ cherries.  Two of them grow on the same stem and squish into each other, making a still-delicious mutant freak.  Apparently this has something to do with if the cherry trees are stressed by too much heat/too little rain during a certain part in the growing season. The More You Know(tm).)

Newscaster:  "In other news today, a young woman and her cat were attacked by a giant floating cherry petal.  They are both uninjured.  No comment yet from the cherry tree."
(Actually I kinda got "attacked" by APPLE blossom petals once in real life, but that's another story.  No, really...I was walking down a street with some apple trees, in the spring, it was very windy, and one of the damn petals flew _right into my eye_.  Ow.)

My kitty tried to rub up on me but I moved, and MAH GOD that's a lotta trees.  Also I think those flowers are newish?

New REALLY pink ground, at least in the right season. (These last few are from 2021.)

Notice the new overall shape of the trees; the younger ones are more slender and delicate now and the branch-configuration is different.  Also yes, those are three Year of the Something shrines, in a row, on the same server.

New beehives, new flowers, VERY new blossom and leaf shape and...everything, OMG REDPINK, and you can't tell from a screenshot but:  new music!  (January 2022)

This is when I walked straight into an eldritch glowing stone cherry tree and, due to a mod incompatibility we didn't know about at the time, almost murdered my awesome 2019-and-counting server.  Whoopsie!
(It's okay NOW though, thank goodness.)

Well, I was gonna be like "Because of THIS", with THIS being the link to the actual mod, but Steam decided to be a dork right now.  Okay.  So it's because of a mod called "Evergreens 2Gether".  There's a similar one for birch trees, called "Big Birchnuts Together". They both make it so that trees can get to NINE different sizes, rather than just three (and yes, they drop more wood when chopped).  I like it for the atmosphere, because strolling through forests that truly dwarf you make it really feel more like an uncaring wilderness, that's been running wild for ages. 

and from the right angles, it makes the screen seem to have more depth/perspective:

...but I realise it's not for everyone because, as you might guess, that huge birch tree there?  Yeah, going past/through a bunch of those CAN be a major pain.  Suddenly your whole screen is LEAF!!!

I use the mods anyway, knowing their problems full well, because I like the atmosphere they add.

Anyway this is what it looks like on my screen, with no part of the image chopped off.  It IS very large, but it's also transparent--at least, in the parts where it's empty.  If you look at a category that contains enough things to fill a full "screen"'s worth, it would in fact be much harder to see through.  It's still not AS bad as I thought from that preview picture, but...

...my very first tumbleweed.  The VERY FIRST tumbleweed I find on this world, has a gear in it.  To give you an idea why I'm freaking out so much:  I haven't even found the DESERT yet.
(also why is EVERYTHING a demon to you, Wendy, geez...)

(I randomised the seasons, but this time without a mod--just using the ordinary in-game code for that. So I knew autumn would probably be a different length from normal, but YIKES that's short!)

And of COURSE Wendy would like the tree better once it's partly DEAD.  : P

(...what's that, you say?  It isn't spring in this picture?  Oh that's no problem.  Just WAIT A FEW DAYS!)

This's since been fixed already (thanks, devs!) but is still a fun picture.  The drying racks, for some reason, would pop into existence EXACTLY where you were, instantly, when you crafted them. This is AFTER I hammered down the one I built right at the firepit.  I thought I was standing far enough away when I made the second one, and nope.

(something something, "It's so cold even the drying racks are huddling together for warmth!", something something)

 BA ba-da da da! BA da-da da-da da-da!  You're seeing that right--it is indeed already spring.  I...DID set everything to "Random" and not "Short", didn't I...?  (Of course, I don't yet know how long spring is going to be yet--I stopped playing shortly after this.  Summer? Might not EXIST, might be up to 40 days.)

And, here's my lovely spring camp, on Day 11. I saw the snow melting, went "Oh crap--if Deerclops is gonna show up at all this winter, it'll have to be THIS night", went far away to...anywhere, to be away from my meager base at the time...and the next morning, everything was green and the sleeping bee I'd parked next to turned red.  

Couple things about what you see here:

The alchemy engine?  Yeah the electronic doodads you need for it--they're more annoying to find now.  There isn't a general "science" tab anymore--instead, we have one called something like "Prototypers and Stations", which does NOT include the _pieces_ of those things, just the prototypers themselves.  It also wouldn't be under "Refined Substances", because you refine the _rocks_ to make the doodad, but not the doodad itself.  Where DID I eventually find it?  Under the "Everything" tab.  Yeah.  Only there, did I find it.  If it's under another, smaller category...I didn't see any that would seem to make sense for it.

The catcoon shrine's even better.  You'd think it'd be under "Structures", right?  Nope.  You wanna know where it _was_, on the new crafting thingie?  NOWHERE!  Not even under "Everything".  I had to freaking _spawn it in_.  And yet, this can't be because the YotC is over, because I did legit _find_ that kitty you see there, behind a flower, so THAT part's still functioning...
(I dunno, I just thought it would be nice if my beta world had a kitcoon too.  I mean, since it WAS still possible. (shrug))

(actually I know it's just a graphical/animation glitch, but it would NOT be at all out of character for the Constant to have cats with little rhino horns.  Or for certain parts of actual ancient Earth history.  Ever seen pictures of those early Cenozoic mammals, aka "When Nature Took All the Drugs"?

Yeah horn-cat would fit right in with all of that.  : P
