Myself49 Posted January 13, 2017 Share Posted January 13, 2017 By this I mean out of all the things that got added in The New Reign so far, I don't think there is a single one that actually actively tries to kill you. Yes I know there are plenty of new boss monsters that want to kill you but here is the thing, you don't have to fight a single one of them if you don't want to. If you don't come to them then there is no danger. Why don't you no longer add stuff that actively tries to ruin your day and you have to actually TRY to avoid it? Isn't that the purpose of a SURVIVAL game? All the new items you keep adding make the surviving part extremely easy but you don't counter balance them with any actual danger that could come at any time. I really hope that in the last two patches you really try to shake it up a little. For now, all we have been getting is Charlie's good side. I think it is time to see the other side as well. Personally I think this game needs a sort of Terraria-style world corruption that eventually appears and makes the world progressively harder but also can be fought and contained, by gathering rare resources that would actually force the player to fight the optional content from which these resources could drop, and eventually perhaps even vanquished (for a while). I think it would be something that would really knit the people in a server TOGETHER. Like, what was it Arlesienne suggested on an earlier thread...something about, in summer some of the narrower waterways dry up and you can temporarily get to new places you couldn't reach before? Kinda like the mine in Harvest Moon that you can only get to in winter when the lake has frozen over, but opposite. I just love that whole idea--the only temporarily-available area that shows up occasionally because climate. And even if it has no actual new content, hey, getting to explore something new would give you SOMEthing to do in summer... Other than what I do, which is basically my usual except always carrying nitre along with my grass, an umbrella, and trying not to set my base on fire by just being there. : P Edit: Oh god. Right now, I feel like nothing much to do during summer. I have finished exploring cave/ruin. So what I can do is fighting toadstool here and then. But if I want to stay at overworld, I am stucked inside my summer base. It worked for me really good I use the Goose fan. Not sure if fan is the same as ice staff. But if i'm not mistaken, the smolder can occur slightly out of the screen? Where you might miss that out? Not sure though, just too afraid to risk on my main base. I think you are right, but the smoldering sound is very easy to recognize, it sounds a lot. Anyway I have only used the ice staff trick to walk around the world, not to be in my base, and I never had a fire out of control like that. Now I go into the caves in summer, but sometimes I need to go to the surface for something I forgot, and I just leave an ice staff close to the entrance so I can carry it with me and lower the risk of my base burning to ashes. Maybe I suffer a bad experience in the future for not being as careful as you, but by now it always worked perfectly! Or maybe something's stuck inside the ice during all the other seasons but it melts during summer? I don't really understand what they were thinking when they designed summer... "Hey, let's make a new season that functions kinda like winter!" "Ok, will it be easier?" "No... It will be harder.... much harder!" "Oh but it will be worth it in the end right, because there will be something special you can only aquire in summer right?" "Uh... yeah sure whatever..." Btw I really like the antlion idea if that becomes a thing. It's not that I don't think the new content is good and I'm having fun with it, but ever since they announced content updates for DST I was really looking forward to new things that are actual threats and that players need to prepare for and defend against and things that happen or spread in the world over long periods of time, but all we got so far is completely optional bosses. Generally a bunch of things that were added also seem like they're a bit unfinished, canaries for example. They're completely unnecessary the way they are right now because toadstool respawns after exactly 20 days anyway and players can use ocuvigils to see if he respawned, so in their current state they're just a way to grind for yellow feathers that aren't really used a lot anyway. Summer for me is a strange mix between "boring" and "i'm too afraid to see the world turn to ash to do anything", and it's not a good threat, because it discourage taking risk. Yeah, cold in winter could lead to turtle in camp, but since you could need food you could take the risk of a trip, and if you want some mac tusk drop you also need to travel. So it's balanced. The survival part isn't that much easy with most of the news items, some could be a little unbalanced (like bundling wrap), but things like cartographer desk could make some part easier without making the game extremely easy. Also, the game isn't that easy for some people so you need to find the right balance. I must admit, i'm not a big fan of giant because they come and destroy everything, i don't especially need things that actively try to ruin my day. In fact, most of the creatures aren't trying to ruin your day. Hounds are. Giants are. But spider, tentacles, merm, bee... All this stuff isn't trying to ruin your day, they attacks you if you disturb them. And you disturb them because you need honey, silk, tentacle, reeds... you go near beefalo because you need manure. So i think that the game doesn't need more things trying to kill you, the game need more needs. For example, alternate seasons were discussed in the past : if you have an alternate winter with special events, maybe you'll need to do news things to prepare. If summer add news things, maybe you'll take the risk to leave your base, meaning you'll need more things to keep you cool, so you'll do things to be ready. You don't really need things trying to kill you, you need things that will be disturbed when you'll do thing to prepare for future events. Doesn't mean you don't need news threats, but they don't have to be immediate. Before I aways said that something will come up in the future but alas that hope is almost gone ... My main point begin that the content is not about makeing it hard for the player to survive but just to add some items that are good but you can live without them too ........... When I first saw DST I was thinking now that we can be 2-4-6 ppl the survival will be harder and mobs(like the ewecus) that will need more than one person to beat ... Also defend the base with more ppl in order for the group to survive ... Sadly the content that needs more than one person is all optional and alone you can still survive more than 200-300 days . In DS (singleplayer) even SW it's harder to survive than DST ... It's sad that the survival part is not going foward ..... As for summer this has been discused over and over and over again summer dosen't have anything special the overheating is just annoying and you can't gain anything that will help you survive the other seasons ... Only special thing is cactus flower which is used to create an item to survive summer = 0 reason for you to even play during summer . I aways go caves set up a camp there and do some ruins runs during it . What about "boss seasons"? These seasons have a small chance to replacethenormal seasons and your character says some kind of qoute at the start of the seasom to let you know it's coming for example- "This winter seems alot colder" These seasons offer new special loot, but the drawback is that they're a lot harder. Maybe the plants stop to grow during autumn and all the food rots faster making winter a lot harder because you have no food. Winter could be like blizzard season from WisH. It'sso cold that you can't survive without a fire near you. you have to stay inside your base the whole season, but special "hounds" come and attack you and they drop special loot. It rains all the time during spring and all the animals become hostile because of their mating season. Everything can start to smolder during summer even if you have an ice fling-o matic. This means that you have to prepare with a lot of health restoring items if you want to survive.
