Ouh yeah, Famine: Online, one of my favourite games. Though they still have to port the Famine: Boatbreak expansion from the Offline iteration. I mean come on, they ported Famine: Big Kingdom too!

New character? It's... not going to be exclusive, right?

Or... is the new character Walani, from that website layout?

Snark mode: this Wilson whom they unrightfully used from Kitten before Klei reacted. Obviously not Walani since there are no waves to surf.

If somebody from Klei could give us a clarification what's going on... that would be lovely.

I don't really get all of this tencent business ?! Is it official , but official only for China ? And are Klei working on this "exclusive" content or china developers ? And is it even legal for them to work on dst and make official content for China ? ... it's really a mess . Can someone put it in simple terms ?

First the rose skins that I don't even know - are they official or just a really good mod ? Now this .....

Also will any of that come our way ?

They are official, and I think they will launch for us as well, just later down the road.

Let's hope so anyway. I want Wilson's sexy red streak and adorable rosey Webber :(

What is up with all this tencent stuff.

Can somebody explain?

Tencent is chinese bootleg steam.

Don't Starve Together was recently released thereon.

They got a really cool set of exclusive skins that we really really want.

This concludes this brief summary.

Eh, at least we'll be getting these skins later down the road...

No, there's no new character - (not sure where that came from, we're reaching out to them now)

After launch on TGP the team discussed this stuff quite a bit. Not just Tencent, but almost all platforms, LOVE exclusives. It gives their fans something to be happy about and it gives players a motivation to buy the game on their platform.

But that puts us in a crappy position. Because obviously we want to make the people on that platform happy, but we want everybody else to be happy too.

After the success of Don't Starve: Together they wanted some exclusive stuff to really convince people (who would likely otherwise pirate the game) to buy the game on their platform. So we talked about this with Tencent. And what we agreed too was that we definitely WOULD make things from feedback from their community. -- The same as we make things from feedback our own community. But it would not be entirely exclusive.

So if we add something specifically based on a request for an event or promotion from TGP, we may add it, but that doesn't mean they will be the only one to get it. For example; we added some special skins this last year for Lunar New Year, and based on their request we will so something like this again next coming Lunar New Year. It's going to be a bit cooler this time around though. =)

In most cases if we add anything for TGP and the timing means it won't release to everybody else right away, we will add something else to balance things out. Otherwise it will come basically at the same time for everybody whenever possible.

Anyway, tl;dr, that it doesn't mean less for everybody else, it means more. SOMETIMES you might have to wait a little while, but most of the time it means "Yay, more stuff!".

Chinese is my first language so I know that the chinese article is talking about "a new character created by the joint effort of TGP and Klei will be available by chinese new year."

If Klei don't have such plan then I guess there was a mistake on TGP's marketing department.

Yeah. We're reaching out to them =)

So sorry for the confusion.

A mistake or a conscious marketing move. At least people are hyped.

The lunar New Year is on the 28th of January in 2017. Won't it fall on an ANR update day?

@joew, I don't want to pry if this is confidential, so if it is, just say so, but is Klei getting a sensible deal out of this? You seem to be catering to a lot at once, dealing with confusion in cases like this, skins (which are less of an issue) and fanart piracy by a big corporation (which in my humble opinion is a massive issue)... I think it would be some silver lining for us to hear it is at least rewarding for you.

PS Can Steam players visit Tencent folks and vice-versa?

Then wouldn't the best solution be to just not make exclusive content in the first place?

I'm unfamiliar, is it gonna be like bootleg DST on a platform you buy from the Sketchy guy always waiting under the streetlamps in the sidestreet at 12 P.M? Or like, they'll have their own servers seperate from Klei? Characters change? Silson the Rogue Scientist, Sendy the Happy, Solfwang the Weakman, Saxwell the Saxophone Master

Alrighty, now I can see what the Berenstein timeline has in their universe. :wilson_ecstatic:

Right now Klei uses the NAT traversal services that come with the platforms - this means that PS4 can't play with Steam which can't play with QQ which can't play with TGP - purely for technical reasons. It's a limitation we'd love to remove if we could solve the technical problems AND the platforms agreed, but it's non-trivial for a company of our size. We'd have to have relay servers all over the world, and we just can't compete with the likes of Valve and Sony in this regard, and we don't want to give people a worse play experience by making them use our relay servers instead of the better ones their platform provides.

One day though... hopefully... if someone with vast amounts of resources and money could invest in Klei that would be great lol but hopefully they don't go power-crazy and start taking over Klei and make decisions that run it to the ground... or something...
