Stop Destroying Hound Mounds

Recommended Posts

OI people!  I don't know if there has been a HUGE influx of noobs or everyone just became stupid but EVERY time I play now people keep clearing the desert of hound mounds.  For those of you who don't know you're depleting a very useful and AWESOME resource.  And before it was just some moron leaving 1 hound mound which is equally annoying cause 1 mound is good for nothing but now its always ALL of them.

This needs to stop for several reasons:

1.  Hound mounds are great and if you don't know how to utilize them don't punish the rest of the server

2.  This being the most important one not just for the mounds but other things like hammering the pig houses (another BIG annoying problem) consider that there are other people other than you playing on the server.  You going around and raping the map and then leaving at winter is SUPER inconsiderate.  Stop thinking about yourself and your limitations and keep the more challenging things on the map for those who want or need those things

3.  If you're new to the game or still learning things, depleting resources, especially renewable ones is detrimental to you and the server.  Leaving things like this around afford you opportunities to learn how to use them

4.  All you desert basers who destroy the mounds you literally rendering your base location useless.  Yeah you got the cactus but you gotta now import EVERYTHING to the desert.  The mounds provide a much better and much more profitable food source than other things on the map

In conclusion STOP DESTROYING HOUND MOUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Hound spawn rate is quite overrated, so you could get much monster meat at short time with tooth. Especially in winter.

2. You could lure vultures in the sky down to the ground with monster meat leftover for small meat pieces, ingredients for bacon and eggs.

3. Tooth traps from hounds also help your hunting and defense.

Unless you're Webber, I don't understand how Hounds would make for a food source, let alone a "profitable" one.

Touche.

Monster meat can be used in place of 1 meat in all crock pot recipes that require meat.  This means that you don't have to be killing beefalos, kolafants and the like constantly to have a steady supply of filling, meaty foods.

Honey ham?  Monster meat + 2 morsels + honey, or monster meat + meat + filler + honey.

Eggs and bacon?  Monster meat + 2 eggs + morsel, or Monster meat + Meat + tallbird egg + filler.

Meaty Stew?  Monster meat + meat + 2 morsels

Worst case scenario; you're eating meatballs, the choice food of peasants. Monster meat + 3 red mushrooms = inedible foods turned decent.  Monster meat + 3 berries = OK, I guess.

Actual worst case scenario; cooked monster meat isn't THAT horrible to eat, and raw monster meat has saved my life a few times before, esp. as Wigfrid.

And morsels are easy to get in the desert, there's always a tiny savanna somewhere in it; and there's often a patch of grasslands with a frog pond and a catcoon, for frog legs and fish.

I don't know.

Usually I won't touch those hound mounds. However I will destroy the ones that are blocking key points of traffic.

Monster meat, I get those form spiders.

Tooth, normal hounds don't drop that many tooth and I get enough from winter/summer hounds.

Bait for buzzard, I suppose one can also get meat from catching birds. I often carry around an Ice staff and that can be used to catch birds. Otherwise a bloomerang is also very hardy. Often there are rabbit holes in the desert too.

varg pens are better

UGH, I was waiting for this retarded argument.  NO THEY'RE NOT.  Some noob on one of our servers destroyed all the hound mounds and went on and on about Varg pens.  It took him 147 days to build the pen so no, no they are not better.  Here are some reasons:

1.  WAY too heavy a resource and time investment to accomplish something that is already provided to you

2.  The hound mounds are ALREADY THERE!!!!  why destroy something to make something else that does the exact same thing but drains time and resources to make

3.  Most people don't know what a Varg pen is, how to build it, or once they stumble on it how to use it (this isn't me, Im just saying people.  Please don't explain how to make a pen or use it)

4.  Again this is just a time argument but it needs saying, It takes WAY longer to hunt down a varg than it does to walk to a hound mound.

In conclusion my argument is the same, they're already there and even though you don't have a use for them many people do so.....

STOP DESTROYING HOUND MOUNDS!!!!!!

*edit*

Also Varg pens are not for replacing hound mounds, they are there to provide you with the resources of the hound mounds closer to your living location.  Like transplanting spider eggs.  You don't want to walk to spiders every time to farm them so you transplant them nearer to your base.  The varg pen is the same so again destroying the hound mounds makes no sense with this argument.

Webbers can build some spider nests around these puppies, and just hold space to harvest the meat.  It's very efficient, especially if you can get multiple set up.  It's food all year long, leaving you to worry about fire and anything else.

Sometimes destroying hound mounds is necessary. I have a single player game, where it took forever to find the desert biome.

By the time I got there the Hounds from the mounds completely wiped out the Volt Goat population. So, I only have 4 goat horns in my entire game. If I got to the desert quicker and destroyed the mound, then there would still be Volt Goats in the world.

I also get attacked every sixth day, and right when I log-in after a long break. So, it's not like Teeth are hard to find.

Sorry i didnt want to be rude.

But to destroy all those hound mounds you have to be really good player and also there is lot of them together so it is even harder. I think that for beginners it is impossible to destroy them all so IMO really good players are destroying them for whatever reason :/

I'm not sure what you want to accomplish with this topic. People will play how they like so your ranting wont change anything just like your previous topic where you were ranting here on the forums about people not pw'ing thair servers and instead straight up kick people who are not welcome on thair public hosted server.

The people you're complaining about probably don't even read this forum, which makes this discussion pretty much obsolete.

I suggest that you start your own games with friends or play single player and do whatever you like there on your own without people messing with your non renewables. That's what I'm doing anyway, because you just can't play dst with public player's and expect everything to go your way.

Yes I agree, I mean seriously OP if you are so bothered by players destroying hound mounds go play on your own hosted private server and kick unwanted players.

If you can't deal with each time a player fully destroys hound mounds without your consent, then don't play on public servers and vent your acrimony in forums. Because as Kill3r86X have noted, the people you are ranting on about highly likely won't know, as much as well care about it.

You do have a point that they are important although players, such as myself. I play the game the way I want to play it, to get entertainment out the game. Not that I destroy hound mounds personally. Your reasoning is adequate, although in my eyes that's how you play the game. People have preference and ways to play the game differently from you.

I mean OP is just saying that he rather not have people destroying his precious mounds. People should choose to or not to break hound mounds.

I think it'd be nice if people asked first (in servers that are not theirs) if they can/could/should break the hound mounds and see what everyone else thinks about it. : P

Wouldn't fire hounds end up burning down the spider nests?

Apart from that, all very valid points though. The only reason why I can think someone would think they have to destroy the hound mounds are because they're used to having very aged worlds (people who play Don't Starve RoG more than they play Don't Starve Together) so they end up having a huge amount of gems and teeth and monster meat (from farms) There's a difference in mentality when you play in a public server people don't take into account because most servers don't last a long time in all honesty. People need to take this into account that it isn't their world - it's a lot of different people's world most of the time.

"dapper vest for life" echoes in the distance

I usually destroy them when I see them simply because when I play as Willow I destroy everything that won't immediately benefit me because fire is fun and so is killing (don't worry, I don't usually play public, and when I do, I'm not one of those Willows...)

usually

In terms of stuff like mounds being destroyed on public servers, I feel like some option in server settings to have enemy spawns "grow back" after a certain amount of time would slightly help. Like, you could see them before they're actually capable of spawning enemies again, kinda like how the fleshy bulb works. This way you could do pest control easily, but would be able to revive spawns you or somebody else destroyed. It would also help the world from going barren, in case you're like me and you frequently occasionally commit continental genocide against every species that isn't human.

Of course, somebody who doesn't know you want to keep the mounds could continue to destroy them over and over, at which point you could just tell them to stop. A cooperative human being would listen and cease. A uncooperative human being would continue to bust things up, at which point you could kick/ban... given you know who actually did it... :^)
