I'm sorry, but the new pickup sounds give me bodily discomfort

Recommended Posts

DST fans are getting so averse to change they’re physically hurt by it, this is getting dangerous.

Jokes aside yeah it should probably be a setting, even though I personally like the new sounds

Please Klei add a option to remove it.

Yeah, if something as simple and inconsequential as head icons moving up and down slightly got a toggle, then new pickup sounds should as well.

I don't know why we don't have settings for all game sounds, so that we can select what we want.

Hopefully there will be QOL update for this.

You have options ! Remove music, ambient... and ALL of the rest of sounds of the game in the same one, awesome ! Who needs to remove just the annoying UI sounds ? I also love how the sea sounds aren't even part of the ambient category :x

Of course sarcasm, I've been repeating this for yeeears now but we need a whole Audio option panel in this game, there's so many things I would wish to separate: from character voices, equipment sounds, to mob movements (who comes I can hear bees two screens away ?) and many more...
and as much as I like the new pickup sounds (but I will sure need to lower them a little), I want a dedicated checkmark apart of UI sounds for the horrible spammy sounds when you hover absolutely anything in the menu screens, this thing is so hear piercing when you scroll in mod pages and such...

Also essential to say but I really like most audio in DST, ambient speaking this is masterful and the rest is in general great too, I just kinda dislike the mixing so this is why more options toward sound is so important.

I'd rather they make it optional instead of reverting it.

It's funny though, I see a lot of folks preferring the old one.
The old one hurt after extending periods listening to it, aha- I'm enjoying the new ones a lot!

My only problem with them is that they don't feel complete. I'm sure in the upcoming updates we'll get more sounds for the rest of the itens, but it'd be better if they just waited and releases everything at once. Kinda like this new arc being split in three

What's the new one sound like? I haven't had a chance to play recently.

basically imagine the custom sound for spider eggs but instead each item has it's own sound

twigs make a wood sound, silk sounds like cloth, grass sounds like grass, gems make a nice 'tink' sound, etc.

they probably didnt expect a lot of pushback on upgrading and fleshing out the sound design.

The reason why it isnt a toggle is because this isnt a "feature" per se. Sound design is an aspect of the game that you generally keep universal across user experience.

Some changes they have to gauge whether this is a general upgrade for the average user and whether complaints for a toggle only stem from the sake of longtime players hating change.

I think the new sounds are refreshing.  Picking up hundreds of logs or using the the lazy forager with the original sound is terribly grating. My only complaint is that it is not a complete transition and so many items still use the original plinking sound.

I don't understand why they wouldn't add an option to disable it for people who don't want it..

There aren't options to disable other QoL features (which is what these new sounds are). Needing to get used to changes is natural but one day of discomfort does not warrant a toggle that would add extra clutter to menus.

Overall, the new sounds are an improvement and if one sound is overly obnoxious it can be changed.

The new sounds are actually badly designed And they should totally take a look at working them to be better
And also they should put a toggle for those who would like to change it back.

Don't starve has really great sound design. Every sound has meaning and doesn't feel out of place.
harvesting, Chopping Walking Mining. Every sound that is done in the game has Great emphasis of telling what is around or what the player is doing.
Every single turf provides different footstep noises
when you harvested bushes grass twigs reeds They all played a custom sound on harvest. But not on pick up of the item.
The harvesting noise is perfect because the player  Is actively doing the action and the sound feels warranted.
the seasons also play into how sound works. Winter making things feel more cold. Summer more bass

Every sound has meaning And giving these generic sounds to Picking up items does not really convey What they player is doing.
It worked pretty well with spidernests since they are pretty rare to grab but the sound did not feel out of place for picking up that item.

But having a collapsing wood house every time I pick up a twig sounds very out of place. Twigs would be mostly silent If the player would pick up that item in real life.
Heck even logs would not make a thunking wood sound.

Most of the sounds that are added for the pick up noises  sound more impactful than what they are for.

It sounds more like im Building something with these items every time i pick them up.

Best bet would be to reevaluate each of the sounds for the items that they are applied towards.  and adjust them by the strength and weight of the item.
A twig should not sound like a house.
Berries should not sound like a basketball dropping.

Come on klei you already have great sound design in the game.  Use it  as an example for further greatness! Instead of giving something that feels half assed.

Ya know as much as I hate the way stack sizes get limited, they could be used to detemine what sound items use, since a lot of them seem to use the physical size of the object to determine what their maximum stack size is.
