I really like the design of Shadow Wilson (and Zombie Wes...): https://shop.klei.com/product/limited-edition-shadow-wilson/

Maybe Klei can use him in his Refresh/Lore Video?

What I want to know why beard hair is special and why some insanity enemies are made of beard hair. A big beard (if magical) could be an storage extention or a third arm...Give us a surprise, Klei!

Im not quite sure if Wilson will get a rework boys....

BUT

If it is the case I would like to see him as a researcher. People who play Wilson are mostly in general begginers and they are learning a lot about the game. Wilson being the one able to register new information like damage hp and clues about surviving, an enciclopedia in formation ish.

Also just for giggles its funny how in his portrait since the beggining he has that wonky chicken having a potion and we never get a poison or something like that eh

I hope the rework doesn't take him into "science" route. He's not a Wagstaff and he shouldn't be.

He's a humorous fella with a lot of charisma but a little amount of brains. He didn't have any success with science in the real world although he does have one characteristic that every good scientist does: he doesn't give up.

Wilson is not smart, but his pure strength of will made him keep trying to become a good scientist, go live in the woods instead of just giving up and looking for another purpose in his life. This exact will power made Wilson the protagonist and the one person that reached Maxwell and free'd him after dying millions of times.

Dst openly tells us Wilson did create some of the stuff all survivors use, previously it was just implied with Meat Effigy that other characters could make without ever interacting with Wilson. If rework does take a direction of new crafts for Wilson, they shouldn't be Wagstaff-like inventions, that's just not a Wilson's type of "science". Wilson's type is the one that perfectly fits Constant's wacky nature where a lot of creatures simply exist just because of the funny world play or a joke.

Also, maybe it's the company around Wilson that helped him truly realize some of his ideas, that's why his crafts are available to all survivors. In the end, he did make a portal only after Maxwell's help.

In the end, what I am trying to say is that Wilson's refresh could go into "more inventions" route but he shouldn't turn into a "real" scientist. His inventions should remain unnatural wacky and imperfect ideas that simply wouldn't make sense in the real world.

He lured Wilson into the Constant by promising him "Forbidden Knowledge" he didn't specify what knowledge exactly and definitely didn't tell Wilson he'll become smarter.

In the end, Wilson did receive a knowledge: a knowledge of making a portal into the Constant. (Which he tried to apply and ironically with the help of Maxwell himself was able to build another portal, but like the previous one, it only brought people in

amazing take, totally agree

I am surprised that, to this day, some people keep thinking Wilson is stupid or an idiot.

Dude, he beat Maxwell/Them in their own game and freed Max from the throne, later joining him and making the portal like seen in that comic. He is just (apparently) just clumsy or unsuccessful in his experiments, but not stupid.

I like the idea of him being just a clumsy scientist being thrown into this wacky world and actually surviving against all odds and ultimately win in the "chess match" against Them.

That aside and keeping the reply on topic, I would like him to have some specific tools or utilities that are cheaper to craft and can perform the same or more tasks than other items (Winona's tape is an excellent example of this kind of thing).

I will be ok with whatever they give him, he is my favorite character anyway.

how actually is wilson after surviving for years in the constant Wilson Main : r/dontstarve

how people who called him dumb or bad scientific will look after being in the costant for 5 minutes image.png.0b4704ae7e296f69d03e4bd7262f24f1.png

Where did this notion of wilson not being smart even come from? Because we see one failed experiment in his early cinematic? Doesnt the game prove that he can very much come up with solutions to basically any problem he faces?

Throwing out gameplay balance for a second he should be good at EVERYTHING. He knows the world upclose the most out of every survivor, he should be more efficent at gathering, fighting, crafting than everyone on average. Maybe he shouldnt be the best at any particular thing but logically he should be performing well above average.

For gameplay ideas he should just get a lot of inventions and specialized tools to achieve this. Shears to collect grass quicker and maybe more of it from every tuft? A weapon that doesnt deal more damage but has significantly more durability than most at a cheap cost? Something that lets him find unexplored points of interest very quickly? Maybe whenever something breaks in his inventory instead of it disappearing he could be able to salvage some of the materials from it? I think stuff like this would fit him being a simple beginner character while also showing that he is quite adept at surviving and making the most of whats available to him. Essentially he should have a tool for basically any situation thats better than the ones available to everyone and these tools should probably be focused on early to midgame tasks/situations.

i want pseudoscience/failed experiments stuff, even though i think klei will give nearly nothing to wilson. i still think healing at the cost of sanity would be a great fit for him and his background, as a counterpart for wortox

also for the people that like to play with no perks, klei should add a mode where perks are totally disabled. that way as a beginner you can play with whatever character you like while having a standard DST experience, not requiring you to play exclusively with "the protagonist"

Let him start with frazzled wires and gears in his inventory as well as the knowledge of how to craft anything that the game implies he created (Nautopilot beacons etc..)

the problem is that he created most of the crafteable items...

is that confirmed or only theorized?? because all of the dont starve survivors have access to all crafts that he does without ever interacting with him

I would argue "its just a video game". Some of the character quotes for the Meat Effigy which is very obviously modelled to be Wilson even have them jokingly going "who is this" in their DS quotes.

I always loved that when I first started don't starve, they don't know Wilson at all during that point and yet they still make an effigy that resembles him.

Always made me feel like Wilson was the one always favored by the hands behind the scenes atleast way before we knew of alter and them.

Could also just be fact he is our poster boy.

the original design was wilson researching stuff to access new recipes and later you could change to willow, science machine gives a huge hint and i dont see a chaotic person like willow, a small kid like wendy or a dumb guy like wolfgang creating the items by their own

also there are quotes in the loading screens about a character saying something like "i like to go to my science machine and do stuff"

And there are several examination quotes for structures that basically say i bet it was that funny hair scientist

for example maxwell's for the fire pump "Higgsbury, I think a bucket would have sufficed..."

This is a little blasphemous but, personally, I kind of hate Wilson's beard. I think if Klei wanted to do a really bold refresh it would completely ditch the beard and reimagine the character from scratch, focusing on his "science," giving him needlessly complicated gadgets to do relatively simple things, and the like. To the point that he would basically be a new character, put through a more modern character design process honed over the years. He's the poster boy of Don't Starve and I think it would not only be fitting for him but a good finale for the refreshes. The beard, thematically, feels more at home with Woody than Wilson. It's also no coincidence that he's barely ever featured with the beard in promotional material and releases; he looks much better without it!

Of course, there's a lot pulling the other way. It's his one gameplay mechanic and has been since forever. There's art assets that would basically be tossed into the dumpster. And, as evidenced by this poll, there are at least some people that really like this thing about Wilson anyway. So maybe a middle ground of leaving the beard as is and just doing nothing but addition in other ways? It would be a shame (from my POV) if all he gets is more uses for beard hair, but honestly that wouldn't surprise me terribly either. So many possible directions with Wilson for so many possible reasons... realistically whatever is going to be done is probably well underway at this point, so I guess we'll see.

They only get access to those items when they go near a research station which some are heavily implied to be made by Wilson, just saying.

Think Tank "Now to see if Higgsbury's ideas hold water." - Maxwell
Loading Screen Tip "I find myself returning more and more frequently to my magnificent science machine-" - W

You can find bases from failed survivors with science machines and other research stations so I don't think it's a stretch to say that Wilson made some of the research stations, registered some of his creations into it, then died leaving his machine for another survivor to find.

If he was a good scientist he would've never entered the Constant. None of the stuff he makes in there is very scientific. A wooden pun that makes you better at thinking somehow. A fish that spits water onto fires it can't see. It's clearly Constant shenanigans.

I just want him to be more of a character and less of a template, seriously people we do not actually need a comparison character anymore, let wilson be more than a hollow husk (with added beard hair generator!)

He was never a "comparison character".
