i mean, don't starve shipwrecked is literally 100 times more colourful than dst yet people say it's a best don't starve dlc ever, we also stll have things like lore and lunar creatures(and pretty much also all nightmare fuel related content), i think people complaining about game not being grim as it should is mostly part of nostalgia about original ds because honestly they aren't that different in part of grimness, things like cawniwal of course ruin it a little bit but again it's just seasonal event that you don't even need to do unless you want some decorations on your base, it's probably not even canon

Shipwrecked DLC perfectly descriped as "tropical hell".

While at first everything appears to be very swell, the more you discover and survive, the more you understand why its "Tropical hell", roaring Volcano, terrible mosoons and poison snakes that sneaks in nearby, ready to doom you just by single bite...

While cawnival are just... A happy carnaval

still don't forget how much new enemies and new bosses we get yearly, taking a break with just little happy carnaval isn't that bad

We never said it had to be dark

You talk about that all the friggin' time, and half the text I quoted was about how this stuff "makes a joke" of what was already an incredibly silly game. If you want more content, that's fine, but I promise that if they stopped doing the silly seasonal stuff that lots of people love the well would just run dry that much faster. New content is beholden to the creative process, and the creative process takes time. Not to cheapen the work I'm sure goes into them, but I'm fairly certain that dreaming up these silly games and implementing them doesn't take half as much creative energy and refinement as making worthwhile additions to the game's regular content does.

I mean, new and "priorytized" part of community is kids and teens now so... I kinda accepted that Klei droppet grim theme and go for kids friendly thematics instead.

Because when I think kid friendly, I think bones and organs trapped in animated ice, or jaws with teeth so far back the skin is torn away from them

Sunfish wurt skin when

If you want to get really technical- DST is Officially Rated 13+ Aka a Teen Rated game in USA, what does DST and Another Teen Based Game have “It Takes Two” have in common? Well it should be dark, slightly morbid humor & content.

For example: There’s a scene in It Takes Two where you suck a bosses Eyes out of its Face, and Later on into that same game: you crawl through the body of a centipede while your shrunken down to Ant sizes like it is a tunnel Pipe.

DS/DST are not childrens games and they shouldn’t be treated as such- otherwise Klei would need to change the games ESRB Rating and I don’t even think that Legally they CAN do that without releasing a whole new completely separate installment into the franchise with its own completely separate ESRB Rating.

If you enjoy Carnival games then that’s fine, no one is saying your not allowed to enjoy them- in fact I’ll likely enjoy them myself, but what I do not enjoy is when these mini-games and silly events end up becoming the only types of updates the game seems to be getting, the best part of the YoTCC event was it PERMANENT Editions into the game (Aka rummaging through Catcoon Dens, and Dens Renewing after being destroyed for so long)

Year of the Beefalo? Same deal here: it’s not the limited time pageant contests anyone remembers- it’s the PERMANENT addition of the Bell and all the changes to Beefalo (like picking items up without dismounting) these are the things people enjoy the most.

So forgive me if I’m just a little disheartened by Carnival Games that do not actually add any permanent changes into the game such as the above Year of Catcoon/Beefalo examples.

We literally have like 2 more characters updates+ content updates to wait for in this year+qols, all event updates are like 1/4 or less of all updates in this year, same for other years, in what part it's the only updates we getting?

The Teen ESRB rating has buckets of criteria that have nothing to do with being dark or morbid. Did I fall back into the early 2000s? I thought video gaming had grown out of this "if it's not dark or mature it's for kids" crap. Also even if they did try to make their game friendlier to kids (and they're not, where the hell is this coming from?) they wouldn't... need to change their rating. That's nonsense. I have a sneaking suspicion you don't know much of anything about the ESRB rating process.

Please learn to speak for yourself. Lots of people turn YotCC back on after it officially ended because they love the kitcoons. And using YotB as an example of your complaint makes even less sense because virtually everything but the pageants were permanent so it was basically just a proper small content update with a tiny seasonal bit tacked on.

Be as disappointed as you like? Just don't justify it with figments of your imagination.

If Klei doesn't, I most certainly will! I've got a summer/beach set cooking up right now, actually.
Release is coming real soon, here's some examples for DST/IA!

Gotta ask, would you be okay if I took some inspiration for some of these skins? :0

Go ahead! I'm sure you'd be able to fully realize them better than I could.

i like, i just expect more prizes and fun minigames

i dont think it breaks anything about the game itself and sure, more survival oriented updates would be amazing but those cant be released without time and these kind of updates give more for the team to prepare bigger updates, also these events are a claim to atract players so the ratio of players playing the game doesnt go down with the work of few devs while the rest do other stuff... isnt that complicated to understand

I dont expect much. Not that i dislike CAWnival, its just minigames. Minigames are fun, but thats like asking what i expect to see at an actual carnival. I expect games,  some small rides, funnel cake, and a suspiciously wobbly ferris wheel. Im not going to the carnival for high stakes entertainment, its lighthearted fun.

As for the Cawnival I'd love some new/better prizes, what would be really cool is a super expensive reward from the gift shop that you need an absolute TON of tickets for just like at real life arcade prize booths. Make it cost like 400 tickets but be super useful and actually worth saving up for.

Idea:  250 tickets for a dog whistle.  5-10 uses before it breaks and when you use it all hounds and all types of varg on the screen flinch for a second or two and reprioritize their aggro.  However, none of them will immediately aggro the whistleblower.

Another one:  100 tickets for a Goodfeather hat.  +5 sanity/min and moderate to strong overheat protection.

40 new mini games and 2 new free characters and the 4 last character reworks and a full overhaul of every cave biome (with many set pieces and new biomes added) and 5 new bosses and 30 new items. I will be very disappointed if it is anything less than that.

Exactly, which is why I can’t seem to enjoy the Year of and Cawnival events because they quite literally make a joke out of what the DS franchise is/was and everything it stood for.

They are fun little “side Distractions” but that’s all they EVER should have been.

...

Im slowly but surely starting to lose hope & faith for this game-

You know those online surveys where it asks you do you expect X named company to do what’s right?

Heres where I would check mark Don’t Know/Uncertain where I use to without Hesitation would’ve marked Heck Yes!

...

Talk about over exaggerating from the gaming community. All yall need to take a chill pill, these events although of the path for the main game are fun nontheless. Sure they shouldnt be the focus and they are currently side distractions still. Just because they decided, "hey! Lets make this a little more fun." by adding a couple games does not mean omg the game doesnt listen to its people help lord save me.

This game is way better than it used to be, and the content updates are adding some huge foundations for much bigger content. So chill out, not just you. Im quite excited for these extra games cause the cawnaval adds for some great aesthetic areas in my bases and a great to mess around with, with friends.

All this, "DST is a grim game. It always has been, keep the depression" is silly cause not only is it waaay to late for that. But it is also just not what the community seems to want anymore. Unless Im wrong on the latter point.

Where did all these people come from who seem to think this game is supposed to be all grimdark and horror that we've supposedly lost sight of when for at least 8 years we've been assembling "teleportatoes", finding their parts with a Vox radio on a stick, recovering sanity because we're wearing spiffy hats, collecting pig asses, and hanging out with an amusingly well-adjusted child stuck inside the fuzzy spider that tried to eat him? The game is ridiculous and light-hearted at its core and always has been.

And if these celebratory events are fun little distractions, and "that’s all they EVER should have been," then they're doing their job. They don't replace more serious content, because the content flow you seem to be expecting is not practical in a game with a required one-time purchase from a small developer.

The idea of friendly NPC's was something cited as going against Kleis design philosophies, especially when you look into the history of the cut Trader npc.

I just think it's disappointing that summer is one of the most requested things for a rework/overhaul, but instead we get carnival games, and that there aren't any additions that appeal to players like me, who are here for the survival aspects of the game.

I know other people just play DST as a hang out / chill party sandbox, so I maybe that crowd enjoys this stuff which is cool, but it just couldn't be further from anything that appeals to me.

its totally fair to miss those early days, but something "going against kleis design philosophies" back in 2012 was, well, 2012. i think its completely reasonable that over 10 years of rotating devs, new ideas, a shift in focus to multiplayer and subsequent lessening of the hopeless and alone vibe, and all sorts of other developments, that something like a friendly NPC would be reconsidered, and then klei would realize hey these fit in pretty well actually! corvus feels a bit out of place when hes just hanging around at the portal, but i think him and especially pearl fit right in with what DST has become over the years.

The Carnival games are okay if you want something to do and you only have 10-20 minutes to enjoy playing..

However: Year of the Beefalo and Year of The Catcoon added permanent Survival Gameplay changes alongside the silly little side stuff and mini games.

The Bell, being able to pick items up without dismounting, Rummaging through Catcoon Dens for stollen stuffs, Catcoon Dens Auto Renewing Themselves if they all end up destroyed.

These are the “Permanent” and lasting survival changes, and judging by last years Cawnival- That did not actually add anything new to the “Survival” aspect of the game.

Klei needs to stop thinking fun casual mini-game and instead think of new and clever ways to present that content ALONGSIDE Survival changes..

Here are a few Examples- Maybe this years Carnival Prizes can be taken to PK or Merm King as Rarer Trading items that reward you with actual survival supplies such as gold or pigskin or whatever..

Or MAYBE the player can purchase an Energy Drink from the Ticket Shop that when Consumed Draws the Aggro of Enemy mobs.

Perhaps having a ton of mechanical carnival attractions could make noise with both positive and negative impacts to survival gameplay:

Examples being: Scaring Away Rabbits or Further Angering Deerclops into coming to smash it.

Maybe I can buy a “Charlie’s Surprise” gift crate from this Ticket Shop that resembles a Sinister Version of a tumble weed with a random Good Or Bad surprise inside?

Examples being free Tam’O or Walking Cane same as you can get for sleeping near a WintersFeast Tree.. or Something not so Great- Like a Spider that Jumps out the Box

I can put living spiders inside Gift Wraps.. that’s a feature I can actual do in this game, So why can’t we have something like a real Surprise box that isn’t just decorations, but also a tad bit of Survival?

Guess what I’m saying in short is if the Updates are like YoTB or YoTCC where they add new permanent features that I’ll engage with often alongside the limited time mini game/Event- Then I’m much more okay with it..

But when it just feels like a bunch of silly little limited time side content I’ll play a few times then ignore: It becomes mostly forgettable to me.

Few things:
Better minigames (and little more rewarding, as most items you can get is pretty useless, decoration only)
Rewards that actually can impact game
Something more in the world, as event feels a bit out of place...
One more set of circus and/or cawnival skins - if we start decorating, then lets go decorating fully.
